Is there a possibility to change character order in the characters list?
idk, maybe via drag-and-drop or using arrows near character slot...

Just another thing on the list of things done 10 years ago in mmo's that ZOS is still striving to achieve.

Yeah I wish this was possible. My characters are a jumbled mess right now.

What's really annoying is that my other MMO doesn't allow you to rearrange them either, but does automatically rearrange them when you log in - so the ones you played most recently appear first. If that game used ESO's system where the oldest characters appear first mine would be in almost (but not quite) the order I want them. And if ESO used the system from that game I'd normally have them in the order I want.

What would be ideal for me (in both games) is to be able to manually put them into order and keep them there. A secondary option which I imagine would be easier to program is to order them by level or alphabetically by name.

Talked to the devs about this particular thing back in March. The change that needs to be is really simple, basically adding a field to the database to denote character order.

So, the question is, when will they make this change. I would really like this myself.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I just choose the one that I think looks prettiest on that particular day and go from there...

Of course 10 characters isn't that many to have so I'm not terribly inconvenienced by having to spend a couple of minutes sorting through them.

How many character slots has the OP purchased, anyway?

I've never really understood the reason some players feel the need for this option, the character screen already highlights the character you last logged in and if you want a different character to log in then it's but a click away. However, some seemingly do want it, but it would seem on any assessment to be among the very lowest of priorities so far as any developer is concerned. It would certainly be misleading to make it sound like every other MMO from years ago has the feature.

That, and the UI to support moving them up and down.

That's what I was thinking. Adding the back-end functionality might be very simple, but players need a way to modify that field so there would have to be UI changes too. The simplest would probably be a drop-down box, but that would only really work for letting us select from pre-determined options like alphabetical or creation date. (Which would be fine.)

The most user-friendly way to put them into a custom order is to drag and drop. But that needs more changes - a way to turn it on and off (so you don't accidentally move them), a way to see which character is selected, and which position you've selected for it (I'm thinking a simple highlight around the character and a thicker/illuminated line for the space they're moving to). Ideally a moving animation too. It's entirely possible, probably less than a day's work for an animator, but it has just doubled the number of people it would take to make this change.

Then of course it needs to be tested to make sure there's no bugs no serious bugs that can do things like lock you out of a character.

There might be additional steps too which I've missed since my experience is limited to helping with 3rd party mods (and not for ESO).

Again it's not impossible, not even difficult for a professional studio, but probably not a quick job either and if they're already working at full capacity doing things which are considered a higher priority it could be easier said than done to make time for this project.

Having said all that I'd still like it to happen and I'd be very happy if they did it.

    ^This!^

And yes, we have been asking for ways to improve our character organization for a long time. Like... allowing us to sort them by alliance, alphabetically, by level or time played... or even by a player-assigned number.
It should not be very difficult to implement either, considering that sorting things is something a computer generally does easily, yes?
But alas... no luck so far.

Humans are sorting creatures and find things ordered in a hierarchical manner pleasing and easier to understand. Naturally like their mail system from hotmail 94 , zos has no idea and has no plans to implement a simple change just cos...

One of the reasons I would like this feature is how I use the characters. I play some characters more than others and it would be nice to have those at the top of the list. Others are characters I only log into once a day for daily writs or only use as bank characters. However, since I've created different characters over the course of a few years, my topmost character is the one I use the least while my favorite character is smack dab in the middle.

I also tend to log into the characters in a certain order when I get on each day. I always log into my main crafter first so I can look at the bank for motifs or blueprints/recipes that the character still needs to learn. I actually log in to each character based on the priority I give that character to crafting. Silly, I know, but it is what I do.

It is a minor issue but it would be nice to be able to order them on the screen based on our preferences rather than the order they were created in.

I wouldn't want that system. I have 15 characters and I'm always switching on and off between them. My character order would change daily and it would be annoying as heck. I'd prefer no system at all to that one.
I'd much prefer that they just give us an option to reorder our characters ourselves, so long as the characters stay in place and don't move.

i like it too. this would be nice. my 4th character has become my main, my 2nd is my old main, and everybody gets scrolled past on most days. shoot, if i could reorder them, it'd probably allow me to consider which one i'd like to assign as a 3rd, instead of the rest of my list being a jumbled mess. then they'd have a player out there doing content they wouldn't normally play, and don't they mention they'd like to see that sometimes?
