Non-Combat Pets desperately need to be expanded upon!

Okay, so mounts were expanded upon by giving us more stats to grind, with the rewards being more bag space, extra speed while mounted, and more stamina while mounted. I think this was a good move.

Right now, all pets do is follow us around. I think that needs to change. We should be able to interact with them (because pets!) and if they're going to be following us around Tamriel, they should be useful in some way.

Here are three pet stats that I've come up with:
* Gather - Pets can pick up resource nodes on behalf of their owners. This stat affects the distance from which they detect these nodes and how quickly they harvest them.
* Tricks - Pets can perform tricks at contests held throughout Tamriel. This stat affects their skill at performing these tricks and increasing it can unlock new ones.
* Carry Capacity - Pets can carry some of your items for you! This stat affects how much your Carrying Capacity is increased.

As for how unlocking tricks would work, I'm thinking each pet would have four tricks it can learn. It would start with one, and unlock another at Trick rank 20, 40, and 60.

    Yes, nc pets do nothing at the moment, to the point that you are required to disable them for trials (Xbox NA). This would be a nice change, but completely unnecessary.

    Unnecessary, but nice.

    I think being able to interact with our pets would be nice too. Maybe having them show off their tricks, asking them to harvest mats for the player or asking them not to, feeding them treats. Things like that. It's not necessary in the slightest, but neither are the pets themselves. I like having my pet, but I'd like being able to do stuff with them even more.

    +1 for my pet monkey to harvest mats for me! lol

    I wish (most of) the non combat pets would attack enemies you're fighting, even if they do no damage and it's just for visual effect. My senche snow leopard needs to pounce the bad guys.

    really not a bad idea in general, but personally i just can't get on board with some of the gameplay results. some of these speedfarmer builds can already nearly dominate a landscape with their quickness and their advance knowledge of every node location, that if they could send off their pets to go get a different one at the same time it'd pretty much "lock out" everyone in the area who isn't similarly prepared. it'd be very difficult to do right. luckily it doesn't matter what i think ;)

    but i LOVE the idea of interacting with your pets. my priest is a dog person (even though i'm not). he's got 4 at the house (probably 7 or 8 in inventory) and switches very often which one he's taking out for a walk. it's weird that he can't reach down and pat him on the head, or take a knee and get behind the ears, stuff like that that dog owners do all the time. it could be just a simple interact button (like sitting on a chair) that has the least priority if there are any other interactables around it.

    and i kinda like the tricks idea, but rather than contests and level-ups, i'd keep it a little simpler myself. it sounds like it'd be fun to just have pet emotes. some of them already have stuff that they do as idle animations, like some of my dogs just switch between sitting down and standing up, but one of them will occasionally start digging at his mat. it'd be great if we could have them do this stuff on cue, and then later add more and more emotes. even just a "reposition" would be nice sometimes: i have this one dog who loves to jump up on the furniture everywhere we go, and as it is i have to walk halfway across the room and come back just to get him to behave. if they could sit, or stand up tall, or speak or shake hands, that'd be fun! some people with big dogs might even make use of a /dancepet emote.

    maybe some of them could be passive world interactions, too. like if i had my husky with me (the mat digger) and i was treasure chest hunting, maybe instead of me taking out a shovel he could do his thing instead to uncover it. obviously an Ancestor Moth Swarm wouldn't be able to do something like that, but with enough creativity a whole bunch of things could be come up with for different kinds of pets. i bet a housecat would love to "hunt" the little 1HP critters that are all over Tamriel. stuff like that.

    i kinda feel party-pooperish not supporting all your ideas as presented, but the general concept of expanding non-combat pets is awesome and has tons of potential. thanks for bringing this up!

    * Gather -snip-
    When have you last seen a cat chop wood? (scratching up your kitchen table doesn't count)
    Or a dog bring you some plant usable to make a herbal potion (tea)? (barfing half-chewed grass on your carpet does not count)
    Or any pet grab a pickaxe and dig up some ore? (actually... come to think of it, I suppose I could see some daedric scamp do that... but then, I did play Dungeon Keeper, so...)
    * Tricks -snip-
    ...are entirely possible. Though likely a better idea for "pet emotes" they can sell in the crown store. You know, just to avoid getting an "Cease and Desist" letter from pokemon lawyers if they add a "pet training system"...
    * Carry Capacity -snip-
    Ehhh... no. We have mounts for that.

    All in all, I don't think any of those are really something that adds to the game.

    If anything, I for one would ant to see some way to have our pets in our homes to be more then static decorations... like, give them a "roaming area", and possibly some "interaction furniture"... like, if the cat comes neart the ball of yarn in the roaming area, an "play with yarn" animation might play, if a pet comes to the pet pilloe, a "napping" animation starts, if a pet comes near the feeding bows, a "nomming" ani, and so on... (and all those interaction furniture would of course be crown store mostly, for extra profit) but that's me, I guess...

    I'm surprised Zenimax hasn't attempted to make a pet that sits on your shoulders yet, be it some kind of bird or snake. I have a northern blue-tongue skink (think a pudgy brown salamander with tiny little legs) that I can put on my shoulder, and as long as I keep a hand on him to make sure he doesn't slip off, he can sit behind my neck draped across both shoulders. I'd love to have a pet I can "wear" instead of it following me around.

    I can see it now...
    Welcome to the battle for this weekend!
    In the right corner we have our first contender this evening, his mother was a senche, and his father a -very- brave wolf...
    7a5f4c33d391a0c603e2654175a33295.jpg
    ...and awaiting his challenge... the reigning champion freshly re-summoned for this evening from Spiral Skein...
    bff184f5ebcf64888e0fdd3503d87f72.jpg
    For our second bout in the lighter weight class, we have our contender from Summerset, with a proud lineage that spans many generations of fluffy fur and noble demeanour...
    68517cf4aee0d663d551d8e841bb1cba.jpg
    ...and facing her will be a new contender that only made it in this weight class on a technicality...
    7f8ef9aa6beab088fdb0c721fe3d4fa4.jpg
    ...now we are all counting on... a... fair... fi... by stendarr, I cannot do this anymore, somebody, please, stop this, its gonna be a bloody slaughter! Animal cruelty! Kitty guts all over the place!
