Can a magplar be effective as both a healer and a damage dealer?

So my magplar is oriented towards healing, and I enjoy the role a lot, but recently I decided to run through Craglorn to complete the zone and gather all the achievements. This required me to run solo most of the time, with the occasional pleas for help from guildmates and friends. I ran twice-born star and 2 destro staffs, but discovered that I was quite vulnerable to some of the harder content in this zone. My question really is, is there an effective way for magplar healers to be proficient when doing difficult solo content, or even to be able to swap roles (dps, healer). My gut feeling is that the champion system would be the main stumbling block, for as a healer, your points are oriented towards that role. I'm curious, though, as to whether other magplars have grappled with this issue, and found some success.

Yes, and you don't even need to reset your CP or change gear, but need to change some skills, sure.
Tested on my healer-templar with healing CPs and gear
Of course, DPS isn't enough to pretend on DPS role in Vet 4-men and 12-men, but it is absolutely more than enough to to complete regular PVE while in solo

Absolutely! I assume you're a light armor dungeon healer, which means you can use Harness Magicka. You can stack shields like sorcs do by applying Harness and then healing ward (lacking the hardened that sorcs have). Barring that, do make use of Toppling charge. Sometimes all you need is to disable something for long enough to put some dmg on it with puncturing sweeps (self heals+dmg), then roll dodge away for the ranged. Soloing as a healer is far more like PvP in your approach. You might even consider running your resto/destro, rather than dual destro, just for the sustain. Also, block casting keeps us alive longer, provided you have the stam to keep it up. Lastly, keep moving. Don't ever stand still. Figure out the NPC's attack pattern and learn to do the bulk or your dmg rotation while the NPC is busy spitting flames or whatever it does. In between that, keep moving while throwing down your AOEs (Blockade/shards/Ritual/Channeled).

Yes; since healing scales off the same stuff as damage

I agree with those saying a healplar can solo much content no problem. The strong heals from your CP means puncturing sweeps heals you a lot when you use it. In fact, if I get stuck soloing a big boss (group dungeon or WB), puncturing sweeps does my damage and self-heals while channel focus and good sustain let me keep it up indefinitely.

I'm still able to slot almost all the good healing stuff (EleDrain, Shards, Blockade, Extended Ritual, Mutagen, Healing Springs, BoL and Reflective Light. The only healplar mainstay I don't slot is Combat Prayer; with channel focus, sweeps and reflective light there is just not enough slots.

Additional question: if I run with a destro/restro staves what type of destro should I use? I currently use electric.

I prefer lightning on my destro staff.

Lightning provides a good 'off-balance' effect from the destro staff Wall of Elements (and its morphs).
With the passive skills invested, lightning staff heavy attacks do AoE damage.
I prefer the lightning staff's steady stream of damage during heavy attacks instead of the delayed burst that fire/frost provide.

i play such magplar like 2 years. PUG vet dungeons only, however... I wear TBS too and SPC.
Destro bar: Inner Light, Structured Entropy, BoL, Blockade, Sweeps; Shooting Star
Resto: Puryfing Light, Blazing Spear, Solar Barrage, Mutagen, Channelled Acceleration; War Horn

I usually do 30-40% of group DPS. Rarely 20%, it's when i get true DPS'ers or when i get dumb team where i need to heal like crazy.

vet Darkshade Caverns 2 and maybe vet Banished Cells 2 are two exceptions, where i slot full healer skills. Only two actually - Healing Springs and Energy Orb.

upd: Lightning staff boost AoE skills. Spear, Blockade and even Puncturing Sweep. Don't forget to slot at least one destro skill on destro bar in order to get the bonus.

Sure, you get extra healing from your max magicka & spell damage anyway, so why not. As for CPs, you can put something balanced. Same for your gear. Skill slots are also flexible, one bar can be for DPS exclusively, other for healing. Kinda like what most magplars in PVP do anyway.
