GPU usage/temps at character screen

I noticed that when I load the game and arrive at the character screen that my GPU usage jumps up to the 80th percentile and my GPU will jump from 35 degrees at idle, to 82 degrees! I have noticed that after some time, especially when I am switching between all my characters to upgrade mounts and do writs that I will get the nvlddmkm driver reset which necessitates a restart of Windows. I think there is something not quite right with this, and was curious if anyone else has this issue with ESO. I don't have any problems with other games causing this, this is definitely specific to the ESO character screen and the odd world location causing GPU utilization to spike in an odd fashion.

It's a GTX 760. All the GFX settings are on low or off.

I have 2 nVidia 660GTX in SLI on my system. The cards usually stay around 165F (74C) when I'm in game. Character select screen is still using the cards as it's rendering your character and pet/mount plus background. 84C is a bit hot. I'd check your cards to make sure they're not caked in dust or the fans stopped working.

How is air flow inside your computer's case? Nothing that can obstruct intake or blocking hot air to leave case?

The airflow is frankly insane, the thing is roaring all day. Might be a GPU fan issue then, as I just dismantled the shroud and cleaned everything last month. Hmmm, gonna hafta stalk eBay for a used 980 maybe.

It could be that:
In-game the framerate is limited by the CPU power. (e.g. 40fps while GPU running at 30%)
But at the Character Screen there is not much to do and the CPU can supply the GPU with data for max framerate easily. The default limit is 100fps and your GPU gets hotter, because the usage is at 80%+ now.

Do you have v-sync on or off?

I have the same issue since release - something is awfully wrong with the character loading screen.

The GPU is running at full power and the fans are running way higher than in-game.

Under performance settings on your PC, make sure you have it set to performance instead of appearance. This lowers temps by a bit.

its a old card. they degrade over time and dont disperse heat like they used to also driver up grades dont play nice with once you start going back in architecture. just save your money and get the new genration on sale buying used video cards is only asking for a heart ache a few months down the road if it works when you get it that is lol

Well there is air moving around, then there is heat extraction. Basically you want cool air coming lower front or bottom and hot air exiting out upper rear or top. In other words, all fans blowing out or in, wont remove heat. Heat rises so you should orient your fans to work with that.

When was the last time you blew out the dust or cleaned the filters?

I'm inclined to think that 1) your frame rate isn't locked (vsync is off) and your card's cooling might be under-performing when it's running flat-out at high frame rates-- or it's just showing its age when trying to keep up with the graphics settings of a game that's starting to push its limits.

It's easy to hit max frames on the character screen since the CPU is largely idle and the game is sending the same high-res data to the GPU constantly. Try turning on vsync and see if it settles down.

Just because the fans are running fast and loud doesn't always mean airflow is good -- unless your system doesn't use temperature-controlled fans and they're just set to run full-tilt regardless. On a system with temperature-controlled fans, it should be quiet at idle/light load, and the fans should only run up to keep pace with the heat output of higher loads. For instance, with my system, If I do video transcoding it sounds like I have a jet engine under my desk. While playing ESO, it's mostly quiet with occasional increases to a quiet "whoosh" now and then. If the fans are maxed-out, it means either the system is running at 100% -- otherwise something's wrong if the computer were idle and the fans were at full blast.

My PC runs hard at character select too. Don’t know when it started but it is like the CPU fan is on overdrive. My PC is both clean and has plenty of airflow.
I thought they may have changed something to start loading assets before character select, maybe as a way to load the game faster. (Not that it does for me)
Or maybe ZoS is bit mining with our machines too...

I play on a gtx 760 2gb as well but i never see it go past 64c it's normally at about 58c in eso
i have noticed my cpu getting a bit hotter tho but that's normal now that it uses more cores are cpu's are finally going to be getting used

Have you opened your case up and see if the fans are covered in dust for your gpu and cpu also if you are using stock cooling for cpu def upgrade it

And btw 80c is pretty much what a 760 will run at if its being fully used hig res every thing example as i said i get no more than 64c in eso but if i upscale the res to 2k with GeForce Experience it will get as hot as yours and its normal the rating of it is 80c why in full use i would get worried if it was hitting up to 90c tho

Also summer how hot is it in the area your pc is in

Bingo, this made a huge difference, almost 10 degree drop in temperature, It's sitting at around 70 now under heavy load. Jeez, I turned that off cuz I hate the input lag, but if this is the difference I get in temps than I'll have to suck it up.
