They are butt ugly, but I enjoy laughing at people riding them. But we have had gaudy looking mounts since way before crown crates. More ridiculous stands out and there are people who want to pay for that.

Like that pirate shirt in Seinfeld.

The advantage that eso has over previous TES games is that it is set long before the other games. So much of the "lore" set in the other games hasn't been done yet. There are many ways to explain lack of large wolf mounts and strange animals. If it makes you feel better just assume that they were summoned from various planes of oblivion. Or that such animals went extinct by the time of the other games.

If I enjoy an over the top neon colored candy world with mounts & pets that go with it, I play an Asian MMO. Not ESO. But that's just me. In that sense I agree with the OP.

That said, I am not opposed to ESO offering color schemes for their mounts & pets that I personally find gaudy and plain hideous since there are obviously enough players in the game that enjoy those and are even looking forward to new colorful releases. No one forces me to buy any of them if I feel different.

What saddens me and keeps me from spending RL currency is the lack of variety when it comes to ESO critters in combination with often times pretty unreasonable pricing on top of it.

The opportunity of buying horse No. 10 or bear No. 4 doesn't entice me to open my wallet while an Outfit option for my critters definitely would. I'd very much love to outfit my Welwa with some battle armor like the Dwarven War Dog has it or recolor my Bear mount and saddle to fit my attire. Here's money to be made for ZOS.

The lack of choice when it comes to mounts is another missed opportunity. The same few mounts rehashed over and over again in different skins just doesn't cut it for me. I'd gladly open my wallet for an Echalette mount or Welwa mount for example. Other players would love to see a Griphon Mount etc. Here's money to be made for ZOS, too.

As a player and customer it leaves me with the impression of the game designers being somewhat lazy and unimaginative which is a little disappointing and does not exactly promote a feeling of customer loyalty in me.

Yes, like it or not this is the answer. Little was known about the 2nd Era before ESO and there is plenty of time between "now" and "the future" for the disappearance of these exotic creatures to be explained away.

Maybe Tiber Septim bans weird glowy horses throughout the Third Empire. :)

There are plenty of people that care a lot about lore and if lore unfriendly stuff is hurting their experience this should be taken into consideration.

Regardless of what we think or know about the Lore , I do believe that so far ZOS has done an amazing job by introducing variety ... diversity ... everything introduced have been fully related to the lore or DLC content ... Daedric princes are Gods and supporting this idea makes it possible to bring back creatures from this beautiful world. I myself am looking forward to coming across a real unicorn which appears at some point in one of Hircine’s questline. The only thing I’ve been criticising is the lack of creativity towards sons of the mounts and items... it’s clear that they are not applying enough efforts or care when drawing those things... the aurora horse is a good example of that , it’s very simple but overpriced. The auroran armour is just an embarrassment to what we had been expecting since that’s related to the Goddess Meridia. May ZOS make them look worthy the money we’ve been charged .

And for me, this game contributes to lore the same way and to the same extent as other TES games did. As such, if there are glowing mounts in TESO, they exist in TES universe.

    Well Said!
Although online, ESO is an official ES game, so it can (and should) open new bounderies to this world and offer more lore diversity, which can be explored on future offline titles.
I dont like some mounts, as the latest flashy guard but thats something personal, so i simply dont buy it... But i love to see other people riding them because adds diversity and its much more fun than everybody using the same mounts.
If we had to stuck to old lore, things would not evolve and the world would be much more "closed" to new content.
So i agree completly with new lore, obviously within certain creative limits!

    Also agree with @Esquirel!
I think they should add more different mounts/Critters. We have a lot of them already in Tamriel, like a Scorpion mount for example...
They re-skin too many horses, bears, Wolves, senches, etc, as we can check on the crown crates...
I would like to see some variety as they did with the Nix-Ox, dwarven Spider, great elk
Although i really admire ZOS work until now, all these skins, sometimes it feels lazy -.-

How do any of these colorful, glowing, whatever mounts, fit into the Elder Scrolls world? They don't...

I am half expecting to log in one day and see you have some item to make your head 3x as large as normal, or have some World Cup Soccer championship logo stuff on people's armor...

I mean ... Doesn't each mount and pet come with a blurb about how and why it does connect to the existing lore?

I'm sorry but that doesn't even make sense.

If you play Elder Scrolls Online you would expect things that are thematically "Elder Scrolls." Glowing green mounts, red tendril saber tooth cats, it totally does not fit.

Be sorry, but for being wrong :)

They do fit, ZoS has a license to develop the Elder Scrolls IP. So long as they stay within the limits of that license and have the approval of the IP holder, whatever they declare lore is lore. If they decide to put something in here then it does fit in to the Elder Scrolls world because they say it does. Claims that ZoS ruins immersion has no legal basis in reality because the IP owner gets to decide what is canon and what is lore breaking. Simply how Intellectual Property laws work.

Intelligent and objective answer, kudos m8.

Agree with this. Also, we may have to live with the fallout from Crates in ES6, so this goes beyond ESO.

Additionally, they're lazy designs - they're giving us transparent glowing horse re-skins instead of, say, a ridable Elytra or Echatere. They aren't adding anything to the lore or flavor of the game, they're just tacked on to make money.

+1 for the idea of letting us ride the creatures we see while playing. The Eschaterre, the Snow Bear, the Welwa, and probably others I've forgotten. Maybe even the Gryphon, if you assume it can't fly with the extra weight.

I don't like them, but we already lost this battle a long time ago. Trounced by people who really don't care much about Elder Scrolls Lore. That does include some players, too.

people have to stop treating this game like it's a single player ES game. The same rules do NOT apply. Also lore is not the be all end all of what content should and should not be created.

Some truly miserable people play this game. Makes you wonder why.

Lore is what attracted me to the game back with TES 3 Morrowind, and has kept me with the franchise since. I trust BGS to stick to reasonable expansion of the ES Lore, and they have, for the most part. I expect ZOS to push the lore as far as they can in order to monetize things in the Crown Store, and they have.

You are correct in that the lore is not the be all, end all, of what content should not be created. It is a guide, and that is all. Still, just because they can do something doesn't mean that they should. I, for one, would prefer they take into account a larger picture of what they are doing than they are.

I suspect that they don't consider the Crown Store items to be part of the Elder Scrolls universe, and not really part of the game. The fantastical creatures they create to drive Crown Crate sales are not necessarily part of the franchise lore. Based on it, yes, but existing outside of it.

Technically lore wise the only mounts that fit in with this whole system of "popping into existence when you whistle" are the glowing crazy Daedra mounts :/ I think they're ugly too, and I'm not a fan of them, but let's not argue about what's "lore friendly" in a game where Vivec has a bunch of kids with Molag Bal, then kills them all, then rips off Molag Bal's *** and kills Azura with it. The lore is weird dude, legit anything could fit it.

That is the only direction they can go. It is too expensive to make game content (DLC) and each successive Crown Crate season needs to outdo the previous one or players will say "yawn" and not buy the junk.
