Worst crate season ever

I’ve gotten some cool stuff from crates, but this season SUCKS. I’ve hoarded my gems, exchanging in everything until I have a bank of 100. I was soooooo sure there’d be something worthwhile to spend them on. But nope...gloves and bugs. Bugs and gloves.

The Apex designs are some of the best I’ve seen in create seasons. But I usually ignore them since I’d never spend 400 gems on them. I was hoping for better 100 gem items, dang it. Oh well...next season, gems don’t “spoil”.

And I’ll make this point for the 500th time @ZOS_GinaBruno - people don’t play the crates to earn multiple apex mounts. It would be an *extreme* minority of customers who would earn a wolf and then keep playing for a second, different apex mount. If you made the very rare apex rewards a coupon for mount of choice, the business you pick up from more people playing crates will exceed any lost from double mount seekers, and I swear by all that is holy, upon my degree in business and marketing, with years of experience in the industry, you will make more money.

This seasons apex mounts are way better and more original than the lame apex mounts from last season, that’s my opinion. Love my psijic wolf.

You can't make a generalization like that. Every player is going to have an opinion on crates themselves, each player is going to have individual preferences about what type of items to use in game, and each player is going to like some seasonal styles over other ones.

And there are already two 'coupons'. The sweetroll furnishing worth 400 gems, and the gems themselves accumulated.

We've all seen plenty of posts like this on the Internet. Some random appeals to authority then spews out bad ideas which are automatically supposed to be good because of aforementioned authority. The system is working for ZOS. When it stops working for them, they'll change it.

Everything in the crates outside a couple costumes and barely noticeable accessories, is ugly to the max. The caps are ugly, all the body markings this round are mediocre at best, the emotes are emotes, and Blue tier motif rewards cost almost double every other blue item. The gauntlets don’t have an effects and there’s a hoard of edgy bugs in the legendary rank for some reason

I got my nocturnal statue with gems from last season, so I think I’m just gonna pass on buying any crates this time around. There’s not in them I want enough to put up with all the junk markings they’re gonna spit out

I have to agree, the crates seems to get worse every season, the only thing that looks good in this crate is the wizard hat thing.
(Instead of ugly muttonchops disney villan hat, why not get an actual mutton chops that looks good?)
Also whats the point of all those tatoos if we cant even show then off? the few variations of barechest/legs armors piece don't helps.

    @Acrolas

Actually, I have a degree in business and marketing from USC, and I run a digital design and marketing firm where a number of our clients have video game products, including one major MMORPG, and so I do things like vertical research and focus groups. I’m basing my professional opinion on that experience, and the overall pricing models within the ESO ecosystem. But my information will always be incomplete, granted, because Bethesda/Zos is a private company, and is very secretive about all of their sales figures, definitely including minutia like the average customer expenditure on crates in one game. But Blizzard reports extensively.

The reason a generalization is safe in this specific case is because we have enough information to guesstimate how much it costs to win an Apex Mount. And it’s helpful that the cost puts it up at the high end in the “luxury goods” category. It’d be harder to make projections on like $5 items because consumer behaviors fluctuate a lot the lower a price is, but when you’re talking an item that on average costs more than the game itself, some pretty predictable rules of economic behaviors set in.

Micro transactions are a new frontier, and have driven excellent growth (MTs themselves are up about 65% year to year recently). But right now our research is showing high “buyers remorse” statistics on high-end micro-transaction purchases...well over 50%. Analysts really want that figure to be under 2%, so we are waaaaaay off target. We also see that about 50% of game micro transactions are made by 0.2% of the player base. So the industry concern is that consumer acceptance of micro transactions could be a fad. That’s a small number of customers driving a lot of revenue. In ESO we see tons of players with multiple high-end mounts. If we get to ESO 2 and customers still buy mounts, that’d be good. But maybe they all decide that overall having a lot of mounts isn’t that important, so they buy one instead of twenty. It doesn’t take a lot of consumers changing their behavior to have big effects on profits.

There’s also a case that game companies working to ensure their loot box MTs specifically have broad support is that this reduces the chance of government regulation. I think game companies have a decent case that these should not be treated like gambling, but tell it to the California State legislature. If they want to ban loot boxes they might not care about the merits of the arguments. Anything ZOS or other devs can do to show they’re acting in good faith would help. (Far better than an Apex token would be posting odds. They’re going to regret it when this gets caught up by lawmakers and they have no excuse for failing to do this).

So my suggestion speaks to something the analysts are really pushing game developers on - they have got to figure out a way to make consumers happier with those purchases, so that micro transaction culture can grow and not collapse, particularly loot box MT culture.

Hopefully this sets to rest your concerns that I was speaking from an uninformed place. Of course, sales recommendations are just that...there’s no sure bet in marketing. Like I said, Zos is secretive, so perhaps there is reasoning behind their decisions. Industry experts don’t really think so, and I’m just siding with the experts.

Really? I guess I can see that. I remember complaints about the apex mounts, but I never go for those. I thought the other stuff was fun. I was able to get some outfits I’d missed in the crown store. it felt like there was more variety.

No, the Reaper's Harvest season was the worst. Besides some costume I already, everything was bad. The mounts were ugly and disgusting. I have a mount from each season except that one, because they were that nasty. The rewards were lackluster. That was the only season I didn't buy any crates.

You know, in a fraction of the time it took you to write that, you could have just printed out a peer-reviewed article of your firm's research and findings and addressed it to the appropriate department at ZOS.

    So no. Not really.

I doubt they would make more money with a guaranteed end result. There are plenty of people who keep buying crates no matter how bad their luck is. People spend thousands. If you buy crates even though theres no guarantee you're just telling them to continue. Stop buying crates fi you want change, just chill on the free crates they hand out. Honestly with the monthly rewards and the free login crates you get them regularly.

@acrolas scientists peer review research, we don’t really do that in marketing.

I do contract work for Zos’s competitor...one of them...I don’t usually contact them, although I did send them a legal brief one time on an issue I thought might open them to a lawsuit.

Also, I wrote that between logs for three characters doing writs. So it was a good way to pass load times, lol.

Well said, OP, well said. Personally, I don't buy crown crates, too much for too little, but enjoy the free ones. I'm not much of a gambler I guess. I will buy things I really like with crowns though, like the Linchal Manor and the beautiful elk mount.

I never liked any of the apex mounts in any season, but the previous seasons at least had some 100-gem-tier mounts and pets I wanted.
This time around ... nothing. At. All. Mounts look like jellybabies and I'm not into insectoid/arachnid pets. Plus the costumes are not very well made (I got the Thane-costume out of one of the three free crates and it is very, very boring).
The motif is a little bit tempting but not too much, because it seems to similar to the free Summerset-motif.
I'm keeping my gems for the next season or hoping for direct purchase-goodies.

Anywho, throw my own subjectivism on this...

The new stuff in this season is nice, the main issue I have with this season is there's lots of "filler" rewards. Tons of individual motif pages, and stuff that is either in the crown store now, or was recently removed.

Actually, this is the first time where I am thinking of buying crown crates. So much beautiful stuff inside. I want most of it.
Except the mounts, they are ugly. Only undead ones were uglier.
I am more than happy to finally see things I want in theses crates. Well, not so happy, I will need to pay if I want to get them, but you see what I mean... :p
Only theses individual motif pages disturb me as it is a step in the wrong direction.

Surprised to see so many negative comments on this season. I do like apex mounts this time, they would go nicely with templar healers imo. There’s only 3 items I want from it - Falkreath Thane costume, eyelashes and blue head accessory, hopefully I’ll buy it with gems from free crates :)

For those who complain: less good staff in crates, less money you spend on RNG, more you can buy directly from the CS, that’s how I see it.

Why do they think we want those gauntlets when they don't have any interesting animation effect? Not going to buy crates to get those. I don't need a million almost-identical versions of the same gauntlets we get free with the Summerset quests cluttering up my outfit station menu.
Also, emotes in crates? Holy crud, I'm not going to buy crates for those. No, no no.
Plus the multiple motif pieces ... the set looks beautiful, but it's pretty lame that they're in individual pieces in the crates.
Not impressed with the direction these crates are going.

I DO like the Psijic mounts, though. I like the other mounts and costumes, but already have all of those. Essentially, there isn't any incentive for me to buy crates this time around except to get that gray mastiff dog and circlet I like.

I'll start by saying I'm not a big fan of the crown store. It's completely overpriced nonsense and the gambling crates are just vile trash at best. These threads have been popping up everywhere though and I had to see what the fuss was about so I went shopping!

Yeah, more off-gassing ghost mounts and fancy lord trinkets that I would never use to customize any of my characters. What gets me is it's ALL locked behind the special gambling currency that has no definable conversion rate to real money. Surprise, surprise.

I didn't check the entire store but is there even anything new that's purchasable with crowns?

Motif are disturbing because of the way they are sold, not ugly.
Costume, cosmetics, memento and the sculpture. The sculpture would definitely feet one of my characters.
Pets... I don't use them. Having these creatures waiting patiently while I am being smashed down by a daedra god just disturb me... So no pets.

Agree to some extent. The crates are a scam and the Motif pages have only sought to dilute already pretty *** odds - which is another scummy move from a very scummy company, thankfully there are a decent volume of free crates to be had but I can't help but think they're rigged because they're free. Colour me suspicious but my faith in ZOS couldn't be lower.

I'm finding there is less and less in the crownstore worth spending money on nowadays and everything is being piled into these blasted crates which is driving me up the *** wall.

I'm getting a little bit exhausted with it tbh.

also, please sack the guy who designs motifs and insists on adding Hip guards, it looks awful and ruins every motif you allow them to add it to. It looks like its been cheaply tacked on and does not look right or make sense - who the hell would wear hip guards with robes????

I really can't stress how much this annoys me, Psijic robes looked awesome and then you had to let that fuckwitt ruin them with their *** taste in design. Bin them. Make them unemployed. Blacklist them as a designer within the industry.

They are awful. Get. Them. To. ***.

There are some things I wouldn't mind this season but I am not going to spend any money when every crate I get will contain a motif rather than something of use. Please NEVER AGAIN add single page motifs to these crates.
