Longtime player here (off and on since the beginning--the BEGINNING beginning as one of the few closed beta testers [ even went to Zenimax to playtest Craglorn with a handful of people before it went live -shout out to those guys!]) But I haven't played since a couple months after Morrowind dropped. I wasn't sure I'd even come back to the game as I have been so far out of loop, but my wife got me the collector's edition for Father's Day (just had out first child-a son, last month), so here I am about to brave ESO once again.

So I'm hoping the community here will give me the lowdown on the state of the game. From PvP to the Crown Store, xpacs and population to how the community perceives Zenimax and Bethesda's commitment to the game moving forward.

I know I know, I can sift through the undoubtedly countless "state of the game" threads or watch some youtube vids, and I will do that, but I was hoping to not only gauge the state of the game, but also the game's community. Also also! I'm bored waiting on this download and was hoping to gt some good conversation going.

Any replies would be amazing! Thanks, team.

Yeah? The game was pretty great back then, but better than the current game?

I would love to see a classic version of the game, like P99 did for Everquest. The current game has turned into a cash shop with Times Square-like full page ads between every character swap.... for stuff you have already purchased. And I'm here typing instead of playing due to the weekly, half day long log in error problem. So, take from that what you will.

First, Congrats on the new son !
I think its still a great game. They have since added Summerset, another skill line, jewelry crafting, etc.
Unfortunately you may get a few posts from the minority here that think ZoS is the devil.
Just enjoy the game and make your own analysis.
Again congrats on the new son and enjoy him forever !

I am going to chime in on the positive side.
There is something wrong with the forums here where they hate everything.

First of all Clockwork city is pretty amazing. Its a feast for the eyes and I found the story extremely satisfying (although a bit short). I haven't done the new trail but haven't heard good thing. The clockwork motifs were also really great. The big thing that came with Clockwork city was transmutation stones. Finally! you can change the traits of your gear and its not even that hard to collect transmutation stones (particularly if you PVP).

Balance wise they has been a wind back of some of the most biggest problems from the morrowind patch that completely killed sustain. Now a few classes are still struggling and you no longer have the anything goes situation you had pre morrowind. But its not as bad as that update.

Outfits!. Not a true transmutation system but now you can look as cool as you like without changing the actual gear.
    Jewellery crafting finally!

    Okay so PVP.
Well its got some balance problems....Proc sets have returned in the form of Sloads and Zaan and there is a proliferation of healing debuffs that makes staying alive 1 v X nearly impossible. And people having been complaining about lag (I mean when are you not complaining about lag to behonest) although I haven't seen it (but I play at an off peak time)

But on the positive battlegrounds is now part of the base game which has greatly increased the number of players playing it. Lag is nowhere near as bad in battlegrounds as it is in cryodil it is also a lot harder to stack a lot of sloads onto a single person when there is only 4 of you so it isn't so bad. I have been having lots of very good battlegrounds games (and a few non games where my whole team just leaves :s ).

I am not sure why people are so certain nothing will be done about our current sloads issue. I am 100% it will be nerfed next patch that its not worth the mats to make.

Just ignore the cash shop and especially crates, you don't need any of that junk.

Thanks! Yeah, he's the best. We're so happy.

As for ZOS, I actually got to meet and spend a lot of time with most, if not all, of their dev team during the Craglorn playtest and I know first hand they are NOT the devil. They just want(ed?) to make a great game.

The cash shop stuff never bothers me. Of course as an older gamer I remember when games did not have this, but if done properly i.e. the devs arent solely cranking out cosmetics instead of quality content (I don't think that's the case here?, but that's why I started this thread), then revenue streams in an online game is just something we have to live with.

I fully plan on giving the game a month or two to catch up on stuff I've missed since Morrowind, so I will definitely make my own judgement. I'm just here to see where the community and game are at and maybe get some hints about gameplay I wouldn't find in a general youtube video on the xpac.

Again, thanks for the discussion, people!

Dude, that sounds amazing! Yes! As a crafter I didn't mind TOO much having to collect every motif in the game, but this transmutation system sounds good. I'm surprised this is the first I've heard about this. Those weekly "come back to eso" emails need to give info like this instead of "come buy a new fancy mount for 50 bucks" stuff.

Not sure, exactly. Since the last big patch there have been a lot of lag, freeze, disconnect, and log in issues. It's not a Steam issue, as the other Steam games work fine. Many of us couldn't log in for 15 or so hours last week, same situation today. No explanation was given then, and I anticipate none will be given this time, either. The big red banner went away, and we could log in finally, and that's that.

Damn, bad time to come back to game, huh? Yeah, I saw a couple posts when I just logged in, but didn't bother clicking any. After reading through some of the posts it looks like I'll be able to play if I did not buy the game through steam? Even if It is linked through steam?

Hard to say for sure. Some non-Steam folks are reporting log in issues as well. And some of the pre-2017 Steam users have a workaround where they can log directly into the game, but those of us who started in 2017 or later have no other option than to wait.

Ouch! I'm actually downloading it through steam. I bet I need to DL it and log in through the Zenimax installer for it to work for me, but as I only have about 30 mins left on it, I'll wait and see...

Good luck! Some of the new Summerset stuff is really cool. The architecture and water effects are improved and more detailed, and the new dolmen-like geyser system is a lot of fun. There are tons of great new furnishing recipes, and they are dropping really well, but locked behind a material bottleneck at this point. I looted a plan yesterday for a simple cup, and the material cost to make it is 11,800 gold.

theyve added alot, most of its good or at least not harmful

servers are still powered by the finest potatoes money can buy, not there most stable rn tbh. so go in prepped for that

Ok, I've played a few hours but all I've done is update my add-ons, sort my bank, and start my jewelcrafting journey, haha!

But my first impressions are all good. The population seems great, the players friendly and all the new zones (the one's I've seen anyway) all look amazing.

I think I'm going to backtrack and do all the dlc I didn't 100% before starting Summerset. Next step is finding an active raid guild and a few good trade guilds.

Thanks again for everyone's 2 cents!

Yeah, dude. I played around a bit. A ton of changes for the better. I'm excited to clean up my quest journal and do some achievement hunting to relearn how to play before I do dungeons or anything too taxxing.

Any new diamond in the rough add-ons I should look into?

There's more players now then ever . Just had a new patch so there's a ton of performance issues and bugs on the work list for devs but once some of that gets addressed it will be a great time to play ESO again . Start back slow to give time for fixes to arrive and you'll be happier . Congratulations on a new member of the family and a wonderful wife that gives great Father's Day gifts .

It's in quite an enjoyable state right now. I do feel that there are certain things that could be better, but they don't detract from the overall thoroughly playable state of the game right now. The writing has been par excellence, too. It's better than it's ever been in that regard. Their writing is just going from strength to strength. And the #1 factor of what makes for the most compelling, interesting content is the writing. It's a foundation -- if you fail at writing, you'll fail at everything else as the content won't captivate your audience. ZOS is proving to be exemplary.

They even have class reps now for balancing, which is more than I've ever seen any MMO do. Ever. So that's yet another way that ZOS is doing things differently to other online games. Basically, ESO isn't a WoW clone. It's something very different, and quite special. If you can appreciate it for what it is, then you'll have a grand old time.

Play it with your wife, if she's interested. Roll some new alts with her. Don't use CPs until she has them. Introduce her to crafting and split up the crafting between the two of you. Try enjoying it casually and working through the story, take the time to discuss thoughts and ideas with your wife. Grab the Pocket Apocrypha addon so that you can collect lore books as you go, then every once in a while you can have a reading session where you'll catch up on books and you can discuss those, too. Try to immerse yourself in the really nifty world they've put together, and you'll find a lot to like.

Now this is how you answer a "state of the game thread"! Thanks for that.

Yeah, my experience with ZOS was awesome. It's one of the reasons I keep coming back to this MMO year after year. Nice to hear the positive vibes for sure.

Actually my wife is at like CP 250 or something, but as our newborn is only a month old (and shes breastfeeding) Its much easier for me to pop on when baby is asleep. She basically sleeps when he does atm, but shes already asking me a bunch of "whats changed" questions so maybe when baby sleeps more regularly we'll adventure together again.

At any rate, all good infos and I hope other returning players see this thread.
