The PVE Community (PC NA) is Way More Toxic Than You'd Think

From what I've been seeing on the forums lately, people tend to think that the pvp community is the most toxic and horrible one in-game. I really have to disagree with that. Why I say that is based off of personal experiences, and from those experiences, the pve community tends to be more toxic.
I've been playing seriously for about 2 and half years, playing almost regularly. I tend to hop around pve and pvp, and I raid 3 times a week in 2 core groups. I pvp whenever I feel like it and have gotten BG achievements, Empress, and my main character to Prefect. I'm also gonna mention I'm like at 1040ish CP. So I'm experienced in a lot of the aspects of the game. I've met a lot of cool people, and a lot of toxic turds. However, I've rarely met toxic people in pvp. A few, yes, but not nearly as many people I've met or heard of in the pve community. I've had a few experiences with people, causing me to quit a guild and burn many bridges I care not to rebuild. One guy purposely ruined a vMaw clear for me because I didn't care to stroke their ego. The worst experience was that I was kicked out of a pve guild that I was pretty dedicated to. Though some issues that had been brought up were my doing, several people felt they weren't grounds for a kick. I truly do think there were others in the guild talking smack and whatnot behind my back to the officers. It's almost undeniable, when someone blurted out in voice chat that they should come fill my position in this trial HM that I had little experience in because, we'll just call them Partypooper, was saying I was crap to them. Another person, during another time, had harassed me about something they couldn't have read themselves without Partypooper talking to them about it. These people were all in the same circle in pve, and their toxic sh*t caused me to lose a guild I loved. Not only me, but many of my friends have had similar experiences with toxic people in the pve community.
I've also heard so many tales of toxic bull in this community. People exploiting vAS, selling the clears/drops for real money, and more. There have also been serious exposing of groups and people that were made absolute sh*t shows rather than discretely addressing the issues.
I have heard of the occasional drama and crap going on in pvp guilds and with certain people, but it's never been made a spectical or cause so much grief for people. I've encountered a few bad eggs, but they weren't out to destroy pvp for me. Never. It's always been chill and entertaining for me.

Tl;dr: I've had way more bad experiences and heard/seen way worse bullcrap in the pve community than pvp.

Platform? You mentioned voice chat so that sounds like console but that's probably the result of the atmosphere created by 12 year olds playing COD that insult your mom

Ah, I have been fortunate enough to not meet those people but most of my greviances is cyrodil with zerg tbagger, shitalkers, people who tell you to kill yourself because they don't like your build, and people ruining the PvP experience for others.

I saw your post about the scroll troll, and there's so many bad eggs like that in the pve community.

Kinda comes with the territory I guess. That’s why I stay away from that territory. Sad to hear you’ve had such rough experiences but it doesn’t really surprise me. It’s a shame the end game community can be so toxic, I mean really what’s the point in being a complete jerk? Doesn’t make sense to me.

Just gonna lay out some insight here.

Toxicity, ***hats, and jerks come in all makes and models, all platforms, all playstyles, and all types.

They are not limited in any manner.

But so do kind, caring, and helpful people.

    Individuals are strictly that; "individuals".

Indeed, and I've met so many kind and caring people in ESO. However, comparing the pvp and pve communities here, the pve one has more bad eggs than you'd think.

I suspect that has more to do with the personal bias of perspective than any real statistical basis.

EVERY group and community has toxicity. Trying to compare which has more is a fool's errand.

Meaning: Personal experiences vary greatly and it is always wise to take those experiences with a grain of salt.

Comparing one kind of Endgame community with another.

I would be interested in the comparative levels of toxicity if you compared the Endgame and Casual communities.

I suspect the pressures inherent to competitive play might have the effect of bringing the... troubled players to the fore.

There's a couple of things at work. For one, as the ESO's popularity goes up, particularly when a new Chapter gets release, the in-game population goes up -- and so does the population of toxic personalities. But so does the population of nice folks, too. It's just that trolls, griefers and toxic louts of all sorts tend to be more obvious

The other problem is a general trend IRL toward polarization and my-way-or-the-highway attitudes which spills over into people's choices of social entertainment. That tends to poison everything. MMOS like ESO are best when they're an escape from life's nastiness, so a random D-bag may really kill the enjoyment if they decide shove their dysfunctional garbage in your face.

But ESO is a huge world and community. There's always something to do or somewhere interesting to go with decent folks around, so if worse comes to worse, I'll just catch the nearest wayshrine to a different zone. I've teleported out of dungeons and delves if there's a persistent griefer. It sucks having to re-start the area later, but it's better than feeding the troll.

Seems to me we could argue all day about "this community has 8,092 toxic people" or "that one has 6,134 toxic people". At the end of the day, it's really just people, and has nothing at all to do with which aspect of the game they want to focus on.

People are sh*tty and getting sh*ttier. Toxic people grow up, have sh*tty kids and don't teach them to not be toxic. Who in turn grow up and have even more toxic kids.

It's just how humans are. IMO, the best defense is to try to be as unreasonable as possible. You can't reason with stupid people, I've been trying my whole life. If you try to be reasonable, you'll end up losing out. So just behave unreasonably, and you will force them into a position where they have to reason with you rather than the other way around. It works better than you might think.
