Why did you buy the game through Steam!

Why did they change how the game works over Steam?
Why didn't they bargain a better deal with Valve or just simply stand up from the table, exchange middle fingers and swear words and walk out the door?
Why did they make this game in the first place?
Why did humans evolve to exist?!
    Why?!

I don't care who's fault it is. I paid for this game and maintain an ESO+ account to play the game, not to endure these consistent access issues. Coupled with frequent crashes and lag since Summerset, this is absurd.

What is the state of the people who bought the game initially on Steam, but got a CD key they had to apply on an account manually, in a browser, that was created manually on the ESO site? But the game was only purchased once
that users actually have two accounts now

even if their non-steam(created with steam cd-code) account was permabanned, after october 2016 they become an owner of 2nd free account, which they can launch by steam only

its fails of ZOS they never fixed

ZOS will only "officially" unlink your account from Steam 7 days after the original linking.

However, I have, from personal experience, had ZOS Support unlink an account from Steam nearly 6 months after the fact (one of my alt accounts).

I had to respond to every ticket and stick to my guns on it, but they did do it, albeit begrudgingly.

So if you want it bad enough, it is possible. There's nothing in their system tools keeping them from doing it.

Did you initially purchase the game through Steam?

No. See, there's two types of ESO accounts: you've got the first type, the regular accounts, that let you play through the regular launcher. You can link those ones to Steam if you buy the game on Steam later. You've also got the second type of account, which is created through Steam, inside the Steam launcher version of the game.

You can unlink the first type of account. The second type of account isn't linked to Steam, it's a literal Steam ESO account that's been created through Steam and can't be used on any other platform.

This was part of the Terms and Conditions set by Valve to allow ESO on their platform.

So if we had the second type, we may never ever unlinked the game on steam?

Unless ZOS comes to some arrangement with Valve, probably not.

Valve has the same mindset as Sony and Microsoft in that they want their users to be forcibly retained on their platform.

If Zenimax keeps this bad service record up they have to do something. despite how willing valve is to cooporate. We cannot sit for hours without end for no real reason. Steam was fine. ESO was fine. If they cant handle the link betrewn steam and ESO then give up the option to remove it.

None of this would be an issue if the service would actully work consistently

No need to unlink, you just uninstall the steam version of the game and download the regular installer from your official eso account webpage and install that, and no more steam trouble.

Should you need or prefer using steam anyway, you can simply add your new installation to steam as a non-steam game.

Apparently not. What a *** deal. I'm glad I stopped buying things through steam before this became an issue. Sorry for you who are stuck, I really hope ZOS will do the decent thing here and let you log in through their own non-steam client.

Do remember to put in your steam review of the game that nobody should ever buy the steam version.

That doesn't work for anyone who brought their copy of ESO from steam after December 2016.

Once you've linked your ESO account to Steam, you can only log into the game via Steam. Trying to log in using the regular installer will simply give you an error message telling you to log in via Steam.

Had this worked there wouldnt be an issue. but there is. so we need an option to unlink it. even those who bought it on steam

Just in case you were thinking, ESO is on sale right now for 10€. :grimace:

@Phage Perhaps you or you've a friend who'd try buying this deal to their "Steam-created" account to see if it reverts it back to an old-style Launcher-capable one?

Go into your folders to find the eso64.exe and you can log directly into eso without having to bother with steam.

I’ve actually just given up using steam with eso due to all the login issues that seem to occur at least once a week

I didn't read any of this. I just wanted to comment on the fact that this post is looking for help removing your account from steam, and another one is asking how to "upgrade" to steam, lol.

I'm pretty sure you can't remove your account, you need to buy a new game and start over. I know you cannot add an account to steam, I tried for days a long time ago, because i had a steam gift card I wanted to use on ESO.

Steam is great for the overlay and achievement count, but there should be the option to log in to the 'offline version' (meaning steam is offline, when that part is not functioning.

You had to go through the process of making a secondary account name and login, it should work the same way. It's not as if Steam didn't already get their cut.
