Improving Items - Do you ever take a risk?

So when your improving Items such as Armor or Weapons, do you ever take the risk if you don't have enough mats for the 100% chance or do you go and buy enough so that you have a 100%?
If you do take the risk, has it ever gone catastrophic?
Just interested as I never take the risk.

There’s no reason to since mats are pretty cheap and in the long run the risks just end up costing you. If there was a bigger pay off, maybe.

I’ve lost a few items while crafting master writs junk or gear for sale owing to lazy fingers, lol. Probably all blues I was trying to turn purple and clicked three times instead of four.

I used to take risks on lower level gear, but only up to blue. Nowadays I just do the no-risk 100%, and know that I won't be throwing away any purple and gold stuff.

Especially CP160 light armour with the massive amounts of ancestor silk, you REALLY don't want to mess with that. :|

Actually I started making a set yesterday and realised after the first two pieces that I'd made them in the wrong style. Luckily I hadn't improved them yet, but still 12k gold in silk down the drain. Duh :/

Every time I press the button, had one fail on 100% since the patch that made that impossible lol

No reason to on green or blue since I have a plentiful supply of improving mats for those tiers. Tried it a few times on purple and got burned so I don't think I would again. Never gambled on gold.

I used to play a game where upgrading from 7 to 8 was like 1% chance

    19 to 20 was like 0.01% chance

So to get from 7 to 20 (maximum) you HAD to buy thousands of $ worth of things from the cash shop to bump the chance up to 20% and prevent the item from breaking

The fact that in ESO you can upgrade things with a 100% chance is just amazing compared to some of the stuff in other MMO's.

And to answer the OP, nope. Never have and never will. Mats are cheap enough anyway and I like to play with as little RNG as possible. If I wanted to gamble I'd go to the casino in real life or something

Only on the PTS server ... just to see what happens. Sometimes it works with fewer mats, but not often.

No, I never take the gamble.

Mathematically it doesnt give an advantage so you risk losing the previous invested mats plus the item.

I’m a gambler in real life cause I’m pretty good with odds. Having played this game for years I can safely say that while 8/8 is 100%, 7/8 is closer to 0% than 87.5%.

I tried it maybe 15 or 20 times over the years, and had it work, I think, once.

    It’s just not worth it.

No, I don't take the risk. And yes, on the three occasions I accidentally did try at less than 100%, it failed.

If your improvement fails, you lose the original mats you used to create the item, and the tempers you used to improve it. It might not be bad if you're losing a dozen or less ingots/hides/bolts of cloth/sanded boards and a single honing stone, hemming, whatever. Once you start the higher tier items though... cp160 you'd lose 140 ingots, 2 honing stones, 3 dwarven oils, 4 grain solvent, and any tempering alloys less than 8 that you used. Not really a good deal.

Either way, in the long run the risk would be more expensive in mats.

Never, as theres nothing to gain.
Mathematically u can use 8 golds to upgrade 1 item or u can use 2 times 4 golds to upgrade 1 item and destroy a second item.
For crafted items, its "only" a finacial loss of materials. If u fail upgrading a rare drop, that could easily be a setback of a couple month/years of grinding.

Risked 1 gold temp once, succeeded. Never tried since as I think I've used up all my luck.

I have always said that if dont have a 100% chance to succeed, you have a 100% chance to fail.

Of course the last time I said that someone post on that on the PTS they did like 30 operations at less than 100% and had one succeed.

So I think my original statement is still effectively valid.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Yes a few times, even with stuff I bought from the golden. Was drunk at the time and did it for kicks. Went fine until I did a master writ some time ago. Wasted 7 tempers and decided to not do that anymore :#

I have never done it for the really important stuff like trial drops and vMA weapons.

Yes you can but it chose the max amount and 100% by default. You can lower it if you want to ;)

The only time to do it is when it doesn't matter. Like you're making an item for the last bit of inspiration to reach level 50, and the item itself is irrelevant. Only then will it work.

I have done this a few times...actually, more than a few times, just to test my luck, never worked.

Recently, a friend crafted a helmet for me, and he could only improve it to blue. I had the mats to improve to purple, so I selected the amount of grain solvent and hit the button to confirm the improvement. What I didn't realize is, that I hadn't selected enough grain solvent, I still needed to select 1 more grain solvent to be 100%. Thankfully, it succeeded. That is the only time it has ever worked for me. I got lucky, but will not do it again.
