It has been since 2016, since I last played, and just wondering if its worth it to come back to the game, I left just before Shadows of the hist expansion.

I guess that would depend entirely on the reasons you left wouldn't it?

I'd start by reading the current patch notes. Then make your decision whether you want to start playing again.

Since you didn't provide any information on WHY you left, I really can't help you.

If pvp, cyrodil is still broken overall. If pve you will be fine

I left because I got to busy with life things, and also the game was starting to get stagnant with having to do this to get a 1% chance of this dropping type things(would spend hours in IC and keep getting the same mismatched stat gear, lowest end of the good gear), and then the gathering of materials, never got enough to max out the crafting (gold i believe it was) woudll farm and farm and decon and decon and never get enough

If you're interested in cyrodil, its still there pretty much the same as always. Zergs fighting Zergs.

If you're interested in Battlegrounds, they are great unless your a high mmr queue'd player then you can expect problems outlined in threads like this one: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/417560/battleground-mmr-system-for-vet-characters#latest and https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/415941/lets-talk-about-the-mmr#latest that complete negate wanting to play them.

If you're interested in PvE its pretty much the same as always, spam keys and win through dungeons and over world stuff countless times hoping to get a RNG drop on the gear you want. Or grind trials with a group a couple dozen times for gear.

If you're just interested in questing and for some reason you don't own awesome RPG's like single player TES titles, fallout, Mass effect, kotor, ect then you can do the same mindless quests reskinned to look like new quests then spread over a dozen+ areas.

Hate these types of posts. OP only YOU know what types of things you enjoy. No one else can decide if it's "worth it" for you to come back. The good news is you already own the game so it costs nothing for you to log back in and check things out for yourself.

    https://elderscrollsonline.wiki.fextralife.com/Transmutation

Transmutation was put in last year. As a PvPer, it is by far one of my favorite things to come out of the Clockwork update. I can get 1 piece of gear I need, then if I do not have the trait I need in that piece, I transmute it.

If you asking if you still have to farm to get materials to gold out gear? Yes, that hasnt and wont change(it could be argued it got worse with Jewelry Crafting, but thats a matter of perspective). Farming gear is far easier with transmutation available. Getting enough materials to gold a single set really isnt that hard...takes a couple days of farming really...but you have to be dedicated, or just buy the mats with gold if you dont want to farm.

So, you left before One Tamriel dropped? The game now has the same level scaling system that used to apply for just the DLC zones in every zone. So you can get endgame gear wherever now. You don't need to farm the IC for goodies. In fact, there's not much reason to visit the IC these days.

I’d start by logging into the game and going from there. No sub required, no strings attached. Completely commitment free.

Two years is a long time, there's been significant improvements. First you can transmute traits so no endless praying and grinding towards Rngess. Next there's outfit system that allows you change looks. There's been some balancing for tanks/healers and Magicka vs stamina that's made game even more possible with it's diversity. There's been quite a few community events and communication from Zos.

Overall the health of game is strong. So I suggest you come back and see many many other things game has to offer.

Personally, I would start fresh to experience the changes. You're old character will still be there and I'm assuming you have no shortage of open creation slots.

omg, don't, sloads is here...you could use it but its better to not play.

That's up to you, and any new characters will have access to the same CP because it's account wide, and will start earning CP once they hit level 50.
