Taunt is under utilized.

Playing multiple games i realize that taunt has always been under utilized and never useful outside pve scenarios. I feel like this game (tank builds) in particular could benefit from a taunt that acted as a self buff and a enemy debuff. The effect wouldn't even need to work on pve bosses as its taunt function would remain unchanged.
If i may suggest, add a cost reduction to the taunt effect when targeting taunted targets or make taunt increase ability costs on taunted targets when they attack somone other than the one who taunted them? I feel like this could add a bit of more use for taunting outside dungeons or bosses.

The taunt skill from sword and shield skill line is actually very good in PvP for his debuff and his excellent damage-to-cost ratio.

Also this set exists : https://eso-sets.com/set/vanguards-challenge

    Absolutely no change needed.

    What?

Taunt is used in Cyrodiil! i.e. Pierce Armor.

And then there is Vanguards Challenge set.

Aldmeri Dominion (PC EU via Steam)

The cowardly Wood Elves are best noted for their unwillingness to engage in a face-to-face attack; a Bosmer will strike at you from every side except the front. You won't cross swords with a Bosmer, but you might catch an arrow in the throat. Be wary in forests and jungles, and watch your back.

@Ozstryker @Aznox @exiars10 There seems to be a misunderstanding. I am not refering to the taunt ability itself that is an excellent ability what i refer to is the effect of taunt itself. The ability (pierce armor) is useful in all situations yes but taunting itself (where you draw attention) has no use outside pve. Obviously you cant FORCE players to target you in pvp. So i asked that Taunting have some additional effect to give it a use outside just drawing aggro.

Essentially im asking that the effect of taunting a target (while using shield or frost staff) adds something besides just drawing aggro and would not be attached to any ONE taunt ability or spell but to the effect of taunt itself.

If you want people to target you in PVP; play a healer, it's the best method of drawing them to me that I've found.

People taunt in PVP all the time. Teabags and hate tells.

Far more effective than any skill.

ha ha @VaranisArano good one! But ya i thought of this when i saw that newish armor set (the one that decreases enemy damage against targets that are not yourself but increases damage they do to you). Taunt by default could benefit from a similar role if it punishes players for not targeting their taunter in a way.

More seriously, the only time I've seen taunt used offensively in PVP to taunt besides Vanguard's Challenge was when Tremorscale had a brief heyday as a favored proc set in Battlegrounds and Cyrodiil.

I loved how Taunt worked against other players in Warhammer Online, playing a tank in pvp in that game was hella fun. Not saying the game itself was great (though I did enjoy it...up to a point) but being able to taunt a player into attacking you just as readily as any npc was actually very important and useful. Don't see why so many games insist on applying different rules between npc and pc, would do much to address balance issues if you don't try to achieve 2 very different goals with the same resources.

I've stopped many a Bomblades with a combo of Vanguard/Wizard's Riposte/Pirate Skeleton from killing groups. It's quite fun watching them try to kill anyone when all their damage is nerfed by more than half :D

@Fherrit i understand not wanting such a mechanism in pvp but i believe using buff/debuff that is attached to taunt itself may act as an incentive to attack the tank...much like the nightblade mark target ability.

The set i linked in my first answer does exactly that ...

@Aznox well ya. but with dps as it is already in pvp a armor set like isnt worth the 5 piece cost. would be better if it did not have such a high damage increase.

I'm reminded of a mechanic from 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons - that was the weird version of D&D that had rules that had almost NOTHING in common with any prior version of the game... and was an attempt to bring MMO play to table top gaming.

(If they had not named this brand new game D&D, it might still be around today and might have been very popular, but by naming it D&D... it was like putting Strawberry ice-cream on a cone and selling it to you under the name "rice bowl with curry"... you might like it, but it wasn't what you ordered, so you rebel.)

To handle 'taunting'... it had skills that, when you used them, caused your enemy to suffer penalties if they attacked anything EXCEPT you...

So... you could cause Taunts in PvP to put a marker over yourself, and cause the person you used it on to do 20% less damage to all targets except you for sooner of the next 15 seconds or your character's death, but 5% MORE damage to you...
    - or something like that.

Basically it needs to make you look VERY OBVIOUS on their screen, and give them a reason to really want to hyper focus you down.

You are all asking something that already exists in the game . The set I linked already has a lot of potential, just not enough players actually bothered to try it. I did, it's viable with a ranged taunt in some situations in Cyrodiil. Using it in battleground would be harder but should be possible for someone dedicating some time to make it work with a coordinated group. Buffing the number any higher would make it OP.

@Aznox Yes the vanguard set exists but keep in mind there are numerous sources for many buffs in game already! Mighty chudan gives a permenant major armor and spell resist buff yet near all classes have an ability that already does that. even potions can do so!
I dont see the argument that one should have to give up an entire armor set for an additional effect from taunt that frankly puts them in too much danger as we have seen the dps numbers in pvp as they are now would make that set suicidal. YOU even state yourself that its usable with ranged taunting, meaning its dangerous to use it in close quarters.
Im asking for a smaller version of this that is set into the tanking weapons in the game, namely shields and frost staves. One that is ingrained into the taunts from these weapons and makes a tank useful within PVP

@kichwas agreed! I for one am tired of the dps or nothing mentality of pvp combat. Tanks were fine in pvp early game but overtime they buffed dps, gave them a good heal (a bit too good in my opinion) and considering the recent change they did where all classes had their healing revved up they should nerf the stam heal. Im a templar tank my healing is not as strong as a dedicated templar healer so while i do have healing, its not near op...its fair that way otherwise i could not die.
