Master Writs

I do my master writs every day on my main toon. She has learned almost all of the motifs. I never get any master writs and if I do, it is for 4 or 5 vouchers. I have another toon who has crafting up to 50. She hardly has any motifs. Is it worth it to do writs on her too or is it a waste of mats?

Well, we all have that problem. And no one can tell you is it worth to do writs on her too or is it a waste of mats. It’s RNG. Next week you can get writs with hundreds of vouchers or you can get nothing.

Not an entire waste of mats if you don’t get a master writ. You’ll still get the regular writ rewards which might have a survey, intricates for alts, repair kits, etc.

The return rate for gold tempers is also much higher for max-level writs, which is the main reason I am in the process of getting all my alts to level 50 and 10/10 for the first passive.

It has been implied by many other posts that motif knowledge has minimal impact on the frequency of master writs, and a higher priority should be placed on trait research. I currently just deposit all my white/green mob drops into my bank and use then log in on all my alts each day to research/decon and proc their hirelings. Costs me about 25 minutes, or so, at the start of each day, but you'd be surprised how quickly just the level 1 hireling supplies add up.

And as @Taleof2Cities mentioned, the chance for surveys to utilize on your main gatherer more than makes up for the material cost in the long run.

It’s probably worth doing the writs on alts. Aside from the master writ rewards, thenother rewards make them pretty profitable. I haven’t calculated it in a while, but the average writ used to profit like $2300 considering the full reward package.

Regarding master writs, some players have done the dirty (and insane) work of recording their drops on thousands of writs across all their characters. I won’t bore you with the math...you can search the forums and find their spreadsheets if you want.

The bottom line is that a “medium” knowledge crafter, defined as a character that learns a few motifs here and there but knows barely any, and then invests in trait research to get to the point of a ~6 trait character on average...these characters earn about half the writ vouchers a master crafter like your main does. And the way the two types (master and medium) earn them is that they get close to the same number of quests, it’s just the masters get a higher frequency of legendary item quests and that pushes ups their average.

I train all my alts in trait research to 8 traits...I just do it casually over time. So I now have 11 alt crafters with 8 trait knowledge who know few motifs. And they all return a ton of master writ quests. So many that I sell them for gold so I don’t have to do 30 of them for 150 vouchers...I sell the 30, buy one legendary quest and do it that way. I lose a little gold, but...meh.

I, also, have an alt who is crafting level 50 but hardly has any motifs and I get better master writs on her than I do on my Master Crafter. Like your's, my master crafter seems to get all 6 and 7 writ vouchers. My alt just got a master writ (blacksmithing) for 174 vouchers and a woodworking for 106 vouchers. So, I think it is worth it to do writs on your alt.

The UESP Alchemy Calculator is good for this kind of question.
