Quests, all the text and the voice acting

You may think that it's pointless, why bother... just skip, skip, skip so we can get rewards and achievements, on to the next one.

BUT!

If you do read it all and follow the story, listens to them etc. Long time from now you will be able to think back on these stories that you were a part of with fond memories. Nostalgic even. Just saying. Now and then I recall quests that I have done looong time ago and voila: nostalgia. Feels good :)

I cannot possibly personaly relate to people who just skip through the quests, becasue to me these stories are the best part, BUT.. that's the thing about preferences. it seems that there is a large chunk of people who play this game, not for the story, but for its combat, etc. some play it becasue its multiplayer in a world that they like so they get to play with other people. there are all sorts of reasons people play and enjoy this game.

and while I neither understand nor relate to it, personaly, i have come to accept that for a lot of players, quests are the exact opposite of what they are for me. a bother to get through, rather then something to enjoy and remember. and who am i to tell them that they are enjoying a thing wrong. its their life, not mine.

People can play the game however they want. Personally, I like the story and I always take my time on my first playthrough of the content. However, not everyone likes a story. Some just want to trade, raid, duel, zerg, craft, steal, etc... I think it is awesome that a game like ESO can appeal and cater to all of these different types of players. It is one of the reasons this game has been able to be around for so long. Hopefully, they can keep doing what they do so that people keep exploring everything this game has to offer.

I only picked ESO because of the quests / voice acting etc.

If I wanted to fast-forward I would have stayed on a Korean MMO.

I remember one quest I did in Craglorn with some guildmates. One of the players I duo with sometimes. Anyway, he tells the others that they're waiting on me as I like to listen to all the dialog. He of course spammed through it to get the quest and says as much. No problem, they wait. We start off into the location, we reach our first set of mobs...

    friend: Celestial Daedra wtf
me: Well, if you'd listened to the dialog you'd know... sheesh

The rest of the group broke out laughing. It was hilarious and couldn't have happened with a better group of people.

Point of that: Even a dialog skipper can fit into your quest nostalgia sometimes.

Has been around for so long?- it is just starting to really become popular IMO, most starter areas are pretty packed with people at prime time (I consider prime time to be late evening relative to the server location), but even during the day in the afternoon it's packed with a different kind of audience (my guess students, retired people and those playing from work). And pretty much at no time I am really alone somewhere - someone is always riding through or doing stuff nearby. So I am not afraid that ESO will go anywhere soon - it is here to stay and to further grow.

Edit: this is my experience from playing on PC EU - I have no clue if that is valid as well for console versions of the game.

English voice acting is really good in this game - localization might not be of the same quality - I don't like the german localization for example, it's proper german, yes, but it tries too hard to sound epic, which feels fake to me, because it sounds so not german this way, even the wording used is proper german, just the intonation is off putting -and I am german by birth.

An epic sounding narration is an american thing, IMO, and like I said the english voice acting and trailer narration is awesome, gives me goosebumps to listen to it sometimes - the same in german, nah, I would not want to play it in german. I was forced to when playing Fallout 3, because the german version did just offer german by legal reasons - but can you imagine how that sounds, when a guy in megaton is talking about the former US in a patriotic way, whilst speaking in the local tongue of Hamburg, Germany?- that is horrible, so immersion breaking.

It's true people can play exactly like they want, I wouldn't have it any other way. I just think that some people may not realize what they are missing. You don't get to experience the interesting memories thinking back until long after ;)

That is modern consumerism, i guess due to too many games and too less time to play all which they would possibly want to play. So they consume that part of the content, which they deem necessary, to get as quickly as possible to end game, which is what they think, this game would be about, because they don't know better from other MMOs. And so they miss out on most of the stuff, the game and the TES universe in general is really about. It wouldn't be like that without competitive gameplay in ESO. They play it as a combat game, not as an RPG and that's basically why they rush through most of the content.

I try to not read the written text but instead look at the speaker - it's more immersive to me this way. In most games I have subtitles off as well by the same reason, I would be forced to read otherwise, eyes are focusing in on things which change instinctively. At least that did ZOS right, no subtitles appearing with the flow of the speech, but fixed written text on one side and the speaker on the other. It allows as well to quickly rush through it, if have to do the same thing over and over again with alt characters. But there are moments in the story, where I listen to the full voice acting even if it is the 14th time I play through that moment - some voice acting is just so awesome, like talking to Quen - I just like her voice and her intonation. The speaker of the DB is giving me chills down my spin as well.

I always listen to all the dialogue - its more realistic and immersive, and ESO has great voice acting. The writing is pretty decent as well so I never skip anything unless I'm repeating a quest on a different character or whatever but even then I'm usually roleplaying (to an extent) so I'd rather look at the character's face and listen.

I wish there was an option to turn the text off or speed up audio. Some of it feels unnatural speed for talking but good for audio book reading.

Understand it if you take lots of alts trough quests, for first play trough no, more in that lots of the summerset quests are pretty funny and has interesting twists.

I love the quests, the effort that the writters put into it is really cool. Also the voice acting, the lorebooks scatter around are very rich.

The problem is the content is braindead easy. It feels like a graphic novel. They definitely should buff that.

Yeah if we could hide even the side text so its just talking, that would be great.

Its hard for me to not read the text with it right there.

Yes the base game quests are painfully slow to listen through, not only that but on console, and with a controller attached to PC that big blacked out chunk of text is so distracting that you can barely even concentrate on what the NPC is saying.

I think they improved things bit with the DLCs but still... its hardly of Skyrim quality....

On my first character, I listened to all NPCs. Even read a few books.

On my 7th character... skip, skip, skip.

The only thing to change between the two scenarios is my character. NPC dialogue still remains the same.

    Skip.

I never skip dialogues, especially playing for the first time, and will never understand people which do. Shame on them. Also, I read in-game lore books to catch a complete story. Sure, sometimes scriptwriting is lame, but not always. I try to look at the lore writing from the writer's perspective, and in the last story updates I found several interesting narratives.

I love the quests and storylines. I use a great add-on, Immersive Interactions which clears the whole UI so you can just see the NPC and hear their speech. It also allows you to modify text size and colour.

First time through a new area, I love to use this and immerse myself in the great storytelling and voice acting.

yes agree, I often press K to hide the UI while talking to npc's. I also often disable subtitles if possible on tv shows and movies: With subtitles much of my times is spent looking at the damn subtitles instead on the actual show!
