I chose tank because my main character was a dragonknight, my partner was a stamblade, and our good friend was a magplar. It sort of worked out that way naturally.

When we quested together (this was before One Tamriel, where having a partner along on quests was a good idea), I tanked because my partner was squishy and they did all the killing because it took me forever to kill anything.

As it happens, I really enjoy tanking. Controlling the battlefield really appeals to me more than healing or doing a damage rotation.

I have a tendency to choose DPS because I solo a lot. However when in groups I like to play what the group needs. In previous games that often meant tank....lol

still figuring out the classes here though.

for easier contents up to vICP vWGT i prefer to tank. short pug queue, get to control the fight, what's not to like?

for harder content recently i came to take a liking to healing. easier to get carried, doesnt need to maintain a rotation, is not integral to handling mechanics in most situations. if i git gud i might tank vet trials, but now for i just heal them.

So its a bethesda game right?... I gotta be a stealth sniper...

I then built an actual PVE Dps fire fire everywhere.

Then I made a tank healer because I didn't have a tank or healer character but morrowind happend and that didn't work so they are just a tank now. But as a tank I could actually get a group for dungeons which was otherwise impossible.

Then I made an actual healer,, still leveling skills.. and then trying to make a stamden healer not sure if I'll make it PVE or stick to PVP.

dd/healer hybrid templar, full fat tank dk. Simply cuz of almost instant PUG queue time.

I prefer to play reactively, I find dd in this game too rotation bound and far too competitive at higher lvl...

I have a lot of respect for dedicated tanks and healers.
Each time I queue as tank or healer I get the most inexperienced group you can imagine.

The last time I tanked it took my group about 5 minutes to kill the first mini-boss of vBC1.
Thats less than 10k group dps, yeah I took the leave penalty for that one...

As dps its easier to carry an inexperienced group so thats the role that usually works best.

i picked healer because i allways play healer

the reason being: i dont have to tunnelvision either on a rotation or heavy/charged attacks from bosses. I can have a good overview on whats going on and advise my groupmembers and calling out mechanics, AoEs and such. I prefer it over every other role because its the most situational and reactive role thus the most active IMO

I always played healer/support classes. I don't have the incentive or the need to kill stuff. I rather help other people(And through that helping myself, but that's besides the point).

I started playing MMOs with Forsaken World. My first class there was a vampire(duh, they're cool okay). But the vampire had a healing tree(I didn't know!) and I kept skilling that tree, because I liked the idea of them. (It's years ago, shhh). So I was off-healer or whatever, without even knowing. Then I always realised that healers were lackluster - so i decided to create one.
Man, my FW-healer looks beautiful. I miss her. =( Ain't getting the same looks in ESO D:<

I started ESO with my ex, he made a nightblade and I made a templar. Then I just fell in love with the class - back then that is. And before I knew how many bugs/clunks the class struggles with. Then he quit and I joined up with a PvX-guild/PvP-guild. People told me they appreciated my efforts as a templar - so I stayed with the class: x

Now I main Warden healer though, in organised PvP that is.

I was playing a very tanky magplar. Shaped that way by PvP design to be an unkillable heal machine with high magicka regen. Started playing dungeons with family and IRL friends. I wanted to let them experience the game as they wanted so they could enjoy it, so I was willing to fall into any role they wanted. It went something like this...

Me: Are you wanting your DK to be a tank?
    Friend: Yes.
Me: Ok, you can be tank this run.
    Friend: Ok.

    A couple fights go by.

Me: You need to make sure you taunt.
    Friend: Ok.

A couple more fights go by.

Me: Do you have a taunt?
    Friend: Yes.

A few more fights go by.

Me: Do you know what a taunt is?
    Friend: No.

I became a tank and never looked back.

After only a short while I quickly became tired of kind-of being a tank. Rerolled a toon to design purely as a tank. I've loved the role ever since.

I've always chosen tank as my main.

    1. Faster queues.
    2. I control the speed of the run (I prefer them fast)
    3. The highest chance to complete a run. If I do what I'm supposed to do, no one should die in the run.
    4. I'm quick to react and I like having an overview.
    5. I can solo most if not all content.

Tanking in ESO is very simple. Coming from end-game WoW, it was like going from the adult pool to the childrens section.

TLDR: I like being in control.

When new to a game I generally make one DPS character to get a feel for the combat and watch what other classes can do, then make a Tank and/or healer as my preferred role. Most games are lacking on them anyway.

Couldn't break 25K dps, so I made a tank and enjoyed not having to play your rotation over and over again until boss is dead.
For questing I just equip my old stam dps gear and lover, easy peasy

I have always simply enjoy being in support roles more than damage dealing roles. I particularly enjoy CC/debuff/buff roles in MMOs, and I'm hoping that someday that ZOS will release a class that caters to such a role.

Tanking and healing are more fun to me. Both require a lot of tactical/strategic thinking on the fly, particularly when it comes to certain mechanics that are designed to throw the group into disarray. While I occasionally like to play as DPS, I feel confined since I need to follow a certain rotation in order to maximize my DPS and therefore do my job. As a tank and/or healer, there is more freedom. For instance, as a Tank, I don't just absorb the hits. I also need to be able to position/hold that boss into the best spot for my DPS to do their thing, recognize one-shot mechanics, help CC any adds so that they can quickly be burned down all the while keeping the boss where he needs to be, and hold the line & survive when members fall and need to be revived by other group mates.

I might not be the best at following a rotation and getting great DPS numbers, but I am pretty good at trying and putting others in the best position to succeed. Which is more rewarding to me.

Oh, and the instant PUG for randoms is always a plus.

I play DPS. In every other MMO I've played the DPS has to sleep, silence magic abilities, stun, and snare different targets at different times, all while managing a very hard style of animation cancelling involving jumping as well. For ESO, running a simple rotation, easy light attack weaving, and not standing in stupid has been very fun for me in PvE
