Amazing peformance difference with External Harddrive

Ok, i just transferred my ESO Game on my Xbox One S from the internal harddrive to a external harddrive and had a incredible performance boost(loading screens, texture loading, texture buggs). Also way better framerates and less lag.(the loading in time in Rawl´Kha just got cut down by 50% and no more black npcs running around)
Now my internal harddrive has a 90% space left and my external aswell.
Can any1 explain this(quite unexpected) performance boost????
Doesnt really make sense 2 me to be honest.......
The difference is even more drastic then the difference i experienced from the normal Xbox One to the Xbox One S...

Better data transfer rate most likely, eventually faster lookup and positioning of R/W heads and things like that.

Nah the Console is barely 2 months old^^ dont think its about to die in near future. Tbf the performance with the One S is better then with the normal One, but the external just increased the already way better performance by a whole lot. #blewmymind

First, it's not a performance boost. You most likely bought a faster hard drive, which means things load faster.

The internal hard drive of the console only spins at 5000 rpm (Microsoft loves cutting corners on their "next gen" tech). It's likely you have a 7200 rpm drive, or even better, an SSD.

I've been recommending external hard drives to console owners since the 360.

Oh, and if you want to see an actual performance gain (depending on your situation), buy a small USB fan and place it next to the air intake (vent) with the blades facing outward.

This pulls heat from the console, which increases performance. Heat is a killer to electronics, so the faster you remove it, the better it performs.

    Enjoy!

Hmm i actually did that more by accident :-D(the thing with the fan pulling heat out of the console :-D) that would also explain the shocking difference im experiencing (meaning that it increases the performance boost from the external harddrive).

a few differences could of boosted performance:

    1) the external HD is clean. It doesnt have any or very few files on it. The game will be stored together. This will allow faster access than if it was fragmented. Also a hdd starts to lose performance above 60-70% full especially if you dont disk defrag regularly. The less space it has left the more the heads have to change location to read files. The more full it gets the smaller the files it can store all in one location decreasing performance. Around 80% the performance decrease becomes noticeable By 90% full it will have to store large files in multiple locations which really slow downs access.

2)Your external has a bigger cache( the xbox one s comes with 32mb cache hdd) and/or it has a faster RPM(xbox comes with a 5400 rpm drive) either of these being bigger on the external will increase performance some and both being bigger will increase it very noticeably. If your internal was also near full, that will add on top of these to a performance increase.

    3) External is a solid state drive. Solid state drives use flash memory and have near instant access which removes most of the access issues. ESO would see a big performance increase from a solid state drive since it accesses a large amount of data from the hdd when loading.
