Bait vs Bait Question

I'm wondering if there is any difference between the regular Bait once can purchase from a vendor, and the Worms, etc., that people are putting on the Guild Stores?
The reason I ask is, that I'm finding people are listing Worms at approx 30g per worm, whereas the bait at a vendor is only 15g.

So, do the worms work better than regular vendor bait?

    Hmmmm...never looked at it.

    I'm not sure.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

Simple bait still allow you get get used bait (useless) instead of a fishy or goodie bag. Using the right bait for the water type (worms are for ocean) makes sure you always fish in something useful.

And I think it does pay to use the right bait... I got two kuta from a wet gunny sack the other day - I couldn't believe it!

I've never used the simple bait or had reason to buy bait of any kind, but I run for every node I see. As a sorc with a staff that aims at anything but what I'd like I have far more crawlers and guts than any other bait out there. :(

Thanks for the responses. I appreciate the input.

MissBizz, I think you might be on the money there! If the regular bait allows for 'used bait' to be caught, then it's not worth the risk, especially now that fishing has become far more lucrative.

I run for every node I see also. :) Can't help it, I'm OCD when it comes to clearing things off the landscape.

Stick to the worms/guts/insects/crawlers, the rarer bait chub/minnow/shad/fish roe is not worth using full time for the gold cost so just sell it or use it as you pick it up.

If you are going for the fishing achievements use the new summerset food or try it out, suppose to increase chance of getting rare fish.

You have to use the correct bait for the correct water hole you are fishing or you will just get crap and waste bait/gold by ALOT.

There are certain areas you can farm guts and others baits very fast 1000+ in less than 30 mins...but you need to know some good locations to do that, most people search the guild stores for cheap deals from players emptying out their crafting bag, some people will even ask you to fish with them in social guild chats and give you hundreds of free bait because they want help with achievements and someone to fish with.

    Ocean - Worms / Chub
    Lake - Guts / Minnow
    River - Insects / Shad
Foul - Crawlers / Fish Roe

Your chance is increased to catch Rare Fishes when you fish in groups (5% chance for one person, 10% with two people, 15% with three people and 25% with four or more people but the fishing hole will empty much faster so more moving around.

You fillet any fish for chances at perfect roe which is worth a lot of gold to other players.
Anything else you can sell on guild stores to players.

Summerset right now is best place to fish because of the "Psijic Satchel" and "Pyandonean Bottles" can drop with all sorts of stuff that has high gold value to other players like recipes/motifs etc.

Just make sure you find a fishing buddy, it seems this only works if exactly two people are fishing at the same spot. See this thread about it: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/comment/5174237

EDIT: Seems to be patched, from the latest patch notes:
Fixed an issue that caused the Artaeum Pickled Fish Bowl to double the number of fish you receive under certain circumstances. The intended effect is that this food increases your chances to acquire rare fish, similar to the bonus that occurs when another player is fishing from the same fishing hole.

The bug that thread is about (getting 2 drops per cast when you are paired with another fisher) has been fixed. The Artaeum Pickled Fish Bowl now supposedly only increases your odds of getting rares as if you were fishing with someone else.

To the OP, never buy the simple bait from a merchant. It is 15 gold per and has a 50% failure rate. I speak from bitter experience. The regular baits:

    Ocean - Worms / Chub
    Lake - Guts / Minnow
    River - Insects / Shad
Foul - Crawlers / Fish Roe

will always drop something as long as they are paired with the right hole type.

If the price of worms has gone up it's because every node in Artaeum is Ocean and people want the recipes. It'll settle down over time.

    Yes!

When you fish at a water source, having the specific bait is required to catch fish. If you don't, you'll get nothing but "used bait".

This is where the regular bait comes in. If you aren't sure about the water type, you can use the simple bait. This will allow you to capture one fish to determine the water hole without penalty.

Once you recognize the fish from the water type, you switch to the correct bait.

Using the wrong bait will render the fishing hole useless, so recasting, even using the correct bait, won't reset the fishing spot. You should find another.

Vendor bait is only good for one thing ... If you have master angler and helping a friend get the achievement ... You get more used bait and they get more fish , ergo more chance of them getting the rare

And after you've fished through a few zones, you get very good at recognizing water type before you even fish something up.

And I believe Hissmir Fish-eye Rye helps you identify water type, but I've never used it.

EDIT: Also, there's a book in game that you find on bookshelves called "A Guide to Fishing in Tamriel" that tells you all of that. :-)

Just as a PSA...if you're fishing at a spot and someone comes along, DON'T LEAVE!!
I see this happen on PS4 constantly. More people = a better chance at rare fish. I'll start fishing at a place someone else is fishing, and 9 times out of ten, that person will leave or tell me to leave. It's the weirdest thing.

Slightly off topic, but needed to be said. Fishing topics are rare..lol

Most likely because those people don't know about the multiple anglers reward. Just politely let them know. Hell, even one of the loading screen tool tips tells players this.

The only thing I don't like about additional anglers is the time of the spot is greatly reduced.

In my experience, I do not find having more anglers translates to more successful catches. Most of my rares were caught while I've been alone, the time of the fishing spot lasting for 6 minutes (well times for those bounty cool downs).

Despite this, I will never tell another player to get lost. It's not my fishing spot. I just found it first. ;)

Those players are fishing to get fillet-able fish, not the rare fish. They want the perfect Roe.
