I Don't Get How Dawnbreaker Works

Quick question. I just reached Fighter's Guild level 10 and invested a skill point in Dawnbreaker.

The target/range is a "cone"? Does that mean a temporary, invisible cone field that generates in front of you, and all enemies who trespass into this cone will feel Dawnbreaker's effect? Or does it only work once on a target in front of you, then the invisible "cone" disappears instantaneously once the targeted enemies are dead (or the timer on the skill runs out)?

Sorry for my ignorance. All my skills are invested into Single Enemy targets, and I don't usually bother with cone or area attacks. Area attacks I get, but still hazy when it comes to cones.

It's an instant skill. The damage over time portion doesn't mean you keep applying it over time. It affects only what happens to be in front of you when you activate it and not some other mob that happens to come in front of you after that.

It's an area attack, but it deals its damage instantaneously, just like some of the single-target attacks you're used to. "Cone" just refers to the shape of its area of effect. (Contrast it with something like Wall of Elements, which deals damage in a rectangular area, or Endless Hail, which deals damage in a circular area.) Any enemy that is in that conical area of effect when you activate the skill will (a) take instant damage and (b) have a damage-over-time effect applied to them (which will continue to apply to them when they leave the conical area of effect).

It works the same way as Arrow Spray does, if you've ever used that skill: it applies instant damage in an area, then keeps a DOT ticking on the enemies that it initially damaged.

Let me explain how Dawnbreaker works: occasionally and only on flat ground.

I actually am going to test a few things out this weekend re: cloak health desync and then post the results. But in the mean time, just know that DBoS has an extremely limited Z axis range and cannot climb most stairs because of it.
Edit: in addition to stairs, think of all those annoying little “obstacles” that your character hits and can’t move over even though they aren’t that big and you can’t even see until you back up and go around them. DBoS will “trip” over them too.
