Whats the point of veteran dungeons?

If I can just upgrade the set gear from normal dungeons?

Sometimes a vet dungeons take hours to finish and involve lots of wiping and confusion when it comes to boss tactics.

This is not a troll question, I am still quite a new player and after discovering I can upgrade my dungeon loot to purple quality, it makes me wonder why I should not just play normal dungeons and finish it in 10 minutes and just upgrade the gear myself?

Unless I am missing something, that is very possible. Ofcourse you could say play vet for more of a challenge. But besides that, is there any good reason to do them?

@Neoealth You can only get Monster helms from defeating the final boss on Vet. Other than that for the skill point, the achievement, purple (/gold?) jewellery etc...

So now that you can upgrade both gear and jewelry, the point of Vet Dungeons is to get the monster helps which only drop from vet, the 2nd Undaunted key you get from doing the pledges in Vet Hardmode, and the achievements done in Vet which grant dyes and Undaunted points. Some Vet DLC challenges give costumes, skins, and/or titles.

You will find that you end up choosing vet 9/10 times because normal is so braindead easy...and eventually you get to the point you only run vet DLC dungeons because regular vet dungeons are so braindead easy.

Ah okay now that seems like a good reason. I had noticed monster stuff, but in my noobness I thought it was just a normal set for that dungeon.

So it's a 2 piece set it seems? Does it stack with the 5 set bonus for my other gear?

The costumes and other goodies sound interesting also.

    Thanks for the info.

You will be able to upgrade jewelry but as the PTS is showing and the math that has been calculated the upgrading of Blue to Purple and Purple to Gold Jewelry will be some time off for most of the population. The research times and the grind of the upgrade and crafting materials will make that proposition not that appealing to most. Wait 170 days and grind your face off for materials or run vet dungeons to get the necklace or rings in Epic quality. Or trials to get the Legendary. The jewelry crafting will be similar to Transmutation, you grind for what you want and then change one or two pieces, not the entire set. That is how I plan on approaching Jewelry crafting. Irrespective of what I would like to do, having the resources to skip Vet Mode for gear isn't in the cards day one or even day ninety, at least as it pertains to jewelry.

Yes, the 2 piece bonus of the monster helm, plus the matching shoulder piece from the Undaunted chest, adds the damage or other attribute to what you are wearing already.

I think I actually broke some of these monster armor pieces for raw materials. Ouch.

Well, if they weren't good enough to make you want to keep them, its no loss :) I've broken down duplicates with bad traits before if no one in my group wanted them. In enough of a hoarder as it is...

I forgot to add that you also need the matching shoulder piece from the Undaunted chest to get the 2 piece bonus from the set.

Vet dungeons are quite a fun challenge if you're new to the game.
Watch some guides to better understand the boss mechanics and your own class.

In normal dungeons you can make mistakes, ignore boss mechanics, do little dmg and you'll still complete it.
Vet dungeons are less forgiving so more rewarding once you get them down.

The monster mask and extra undaunted keys are also nice.

If you don’t need the Monster Set, or aren’t planning on doing vet hardmode, there isn’t much point. DLC vet hardmode are a completely different beast than regular vet dungeons hardmode. If your group is struggling through a vet dlc, hardmode is just out of the question really.

Maybe to get a chance at more tranny stones, or for achievements. They all have a speed run, no death, hardmode and just regular vet achievements.

IMO vet dungeons will make you a better player and it’s part of the process in learning mechanics, play style etc.. I’ve been playing this game since launch and we alll struggled at the beginning but it made us better. I remember Vet Darkshade caverns Grobol boss was hard if you were not coordinated and even the Engine Guardian but those struggles made us better in adjusting and overcoming. So for me it’s more than just the boss helm.

gives you a quick and dirty reality check of just how ridiculously trivial the overland content and normal dungeons are, particularly if you're in harder vets like vCoA 2 or even vet dlc dungeons

but it does give you something to work towards. Just remember that coming on forums to say some boss needs to be nerfed isnt the answer, but better gear, more awareness, more class knowledge, and more mechanical mastery

and yea if you need the monster helm or double undaunted keys/transmute crystal that's also useful

The reasons I am doing vet dungeons:

    1. Monster helms
    2. Achievements - there is an entire achievements section for Veteran Dungeons
    3. Enjoyment
    4. Become a better player
    5. Additional pledge key
    6. Better drops
