So how do we feel about a mercenary mode?

Pretty simple, when you choose a home campaign you also choose which alliance you want to fight for.

To be more clear, you just pick one of the existing alliances, you just get the option to pvp on a different from the one you picked when you created your character, at least for that campaign.

There would obviously be a long cooldown on doing this.

    I would be in favour of an option for a long-term alliance change though. Like a month cooldown, possibly for Crowns.

    Would be fun if you pick alliance when you get campaign and can't change it for the duration. Even if you pay to swap campaigns back and forth it should remember and lock you in. And then that would be the perfect account wide faction lock campaign. Since you would only be locked for up to 30 days.

    Sounds interesting. I would expect in mercenary mode that you would not be able to rank for the alliance you were fighting for. Perhaps there could be additional penalties.

    I don't know. Those 5 purple rings of Curse Easter, Beckoning Steel, Arch Mage, etc., as so darn good and such a huge money maker it's too much to give up.

    Certain zone chat personalities would surely have a heart attack. But realistically, it’s a bad idea for population balance reasons.

    A black flag pirate faction where everyone except for your group is flagged for pvp however, that’s something I’ve wanted for years. There would be so much room for activities...

    this would be so abusable it would be unreal. unless the campaign becomes specifically locked to that alliance for the whole account till it ends, even then "hey guys were all going DC this round so everyone go DC or be train rekt"

    which overall would be a pure plague for cyrodiil

    I probably shouldn’t have voted, as this kind of system could be kinda nice if it was implemented correctly. There would need to be a substantial timer on it so that you couldn’t just hop to a different faction whenver your faction is losing.

    There are other issues with it of course, so I don’t know if it would really be worth doing, but it definately does suck to have to make an entirely new toon when I just want to pvp in another faction.

    Mercenary as in you fight all factions and other mercenary groups.
    Your only allies are the players within your group and group size is capped to 6 so it has flexibility to face numbers but also not become a zerg.

    Which faction would be queued up behind the mercs? I would be ok with the mercs if we have the full-campaign cooldown and you have your own pop lock.

    No except perhaps if you could only swap to a side when it has a low population bonus (i.e. the underdog) and you can only stay there until it comes back into balance (not sure how you would measure it) so that it becomes a population balancing exercise rather than letting people flip in large numbers to whatever side is winning. It would be great for those groups who go looking for the fun outnumbered fights and a way of balancing out populations.

    Could be great or horrible depending on implementation.

    The problem we have now was created by not having faction locks on account per campaign. Path of least resistance is applying to pvp.. Most players don't know how to have fun vs a zerg or aren't willing and/or at the level to combat it. It's easier to switch to the side with the larger zerg instead of attempting to handle it. The end result is making the largest zerg even larger.

    Having an account wide lock per campaign forces people to deal with the enemy zerg being larger sometimes. While this may drive some people to quit pvp at some times, it keeps the population more even, causing the problem to arise less.

    The unlocked tactic results in things like the current state of AD. Demoralized and dissolving into other factions. While this is fun for people like me that make anti zerg builds, it's bad for the game in general. It also means I am only able to play 10% of my characters when EP is too overpopulated and I have to play something else.

    Conclusion :
    Mercenary mode be would excellent if implemented with a account wide campaign long lock.
    Mercenary mode would make things worse if swapping was instant.

    There could be a potential 2nd option for mercenary mode :
    This option would take away your option to choose which faction you are and place you on the lowest population always. This would allow those swapping to balance pop to still do their thing while stopping those swapping to larger pop.
