After four years, it is clear to everybody that PvP and performance are not the main focus of ZoS. Every patch has new PvE content, while we got only IC and battlegrounds in 4 years. Moreover, despite the performance problems have been present since years, the company did not invest in new servers/upgrading them. Fair? No. Legit? Yes. They are here to make money, and I totally do not blame them for this. I'm ok with it, and I like the idea of content we pvpers have, but for god's sake, make it playable! I will not enter in detail regarding BGs and IC, since I do not play the former much (i really do not like the fact of getting 1 deathmatch every 317824654589723 games and not having cps) and the latter is dead as much as Mozart. Like, really, freaking dead 99% of the time. Cyrodiil, on the other hand, is well alive, and people are eager to play it! The problem? We all know it way too well: lag. Disgusting, constantly present lag. I am playing on PC EU, I can assure you that, on average during weeks, after 7pm Vivec is laggy up to a point where I have no idea how people can queue, and same is becoming Sotha Sil, even if at a lesser degree. Thus the obvious consequence: going to Shor. The problem? Even with a 2-3-3 population, the campaign is half dead. You only find huge zergs running around mindlessly, and if u only try to take one resource to have a fight not against 24 people, you can pass up to 20 minutes waiting for someone. I have the impression that Shor is full zerg or nothing, and honestly, it has been killing my love for the game since I am "forced" into it.
So, why not reduce the dimension of the map (half of which is not played anyhow: towns, drakelowe and similars, etc.), reduce the population and grant a decent performance even at peak stress for the server? I am pretty sure everybody would like to have a bit smaller map but never lag. I know it takes effort and resources, I know PvP is not the main focus of ESO (even if it should since it is amazing, but that's just my opinion), but please make your game better. Just reduce the scale of Cyrodiil and its population as much as it takes to not have a huge, empty map and that performance is (almost) always good.
Ps: I know there obviously are problems related to such proposed solution in terms of only a big ball group per faction running around etc, but those are easy problems to solve. Performance is not, and ZoS demonstrated this way too well in 4 years. PLEASE do something to cyrodiil to make it playable in prime time, I beg you. This solution I proposed wouldn't even take so much money to adopt, it's just a matter of design. PLEASE.
PPS: I play from the Netherlands, I have between 60 and 80 ping in shor and in PvE land, so no, it's not a problem of my internet infrastructure.
