@chuckaloco CP is the new VR. Back when the game was released you had levels VR1-16, now we have CP10-720.

Veteran Ranks was the old post-50 leveling system before CP replaced it.

Ranks went from 1 - 10 (at release), 12 (Crypt of Hearts II release) 14 (Craglorn?) and 16 (Imperial City). Gear was scaled off ranks like CP now (10 CP = 1 VR) however VR was per character (not account wide like CP) and a very long grind taking millions of XP.

All zones are now CP160 and characters below that (maybe only below 50) are scaled up in power to be able to play them.

Basically you can do any zone at any level now and you'll be scaled to play there fine. Some dungeons and trials (group content) does have a higher entry level as they assume players of CP160 or CP300.

CP300 is the cap on attribute gains for CP points spent, after then everything you gain in power is simply based on the points you spend.

To expand on what Turelus has said above, all zones are scaled to CP160 yes, all characters below level 50 are also scaled to cp160 (so all zones are technically your level).

However between the levels of CP10 & CP160 you do lose stats so the game gets quite a bit harder since then mobs are technically higher level than you. But on spending points into each CP section (Red, Green, Blue) your corresponding stat will increase, this is up to CP300.

The only variations to the above rule are dungeons, trials and places like Maelstrom, where everything is scaled to the level/CP cap of release.

*If any information was incorrect feel free to correct me :) *

EDIT: They do this because as you level, you'll unlock more skills/passives and also get better armour to cushion the stat loss. Also for an example without CP:
    Health 8744
    Magicka 16568
    Stamina 7958

    With CP (300):
    Health 10492
    Magicka 19881
    Stamina 9549

Veteran Ranks was the old post level 50 leveling system.

Prior to current system, the world wasn't all scaled to CP160 but on a level scaling system. You couldn't travel the world as freely as now with each zone was a linear progression into the next zone and quests had level ranges that affected their XP rewards so outleveling a quest would greatly diminish the XP earned for it. What I mean by this is that, if you started off in the Aldermi Dominion, you couldn't visit the DC or EP zones until you finished the main questline, Coldharbour and all and that each zone would have a preset level range (Auridon levels 1-14, Grahtwood levels 15-24, and so on) If you were level 17 doing Auridon quests, the XP earned was like a 10th of what you would have normally gotten at level 12. Whole system was very restrictive and linear.

Veteran Ranks were placed in after completing the main quest and gaining assess to the next set of alliance zones. So, after completing AD, you'd get set to the EP zones as part of Cadwell's Silver and DC zones for Cadwell's Gold. Silver Zones were Veteran Ranks 1-5 while Gold Zones were Veteran Ranks 6-10. Craglorn was introduced later and came in a Lower Section, Vet Ranks 11-12 and Upper Section, Vet Ranks 13-14. Imperial City increased Vet Ranks to Vet 16. I want to say the system was finally abandoned around the time of the Thieves Guild DLC was introduced but I can't remember for sure. I do vaguely remember Wrothgar having Vet Ranks still so it was definitely after Wrothgar release.

The overall system was highly flawed for a number of reasons. As I said before, it greatly limited freedom in exploration, you'd always have to do the MQ to advance thru to get access to higher level locations, meaning Skyshards/Skill Points/Lorebooks/etc was incredibly annoying to get. Next, the game didn't have guaranteed set drops like it does now, nor were there as many sets. Sets were also level locked to that of the region
it dropped in so the Elegant set you got at level 14 would remain level locked to 14 forever, regardless of your own level. Dungeons/Trials also followed their own leveling system so Fungal Grotto would drop low level gear while CoA 2 would drop VR12 gear. HRC and AA would drop VR12 gear while SO dropped VR14 gear. The gear then was also VASTLY different than what drops now. You had stuff like Viper's Sting dropping in HRC and back then, most sets only dropped in 5-6 different pieces. There wasn't Jewelry or weapons for some sets, no boots or gloves for another, it was absolute anarchy getting 5 pieces of anything that wasn't crafted.

Crafting Mats were also locked by zone levels, which admittedly wasn't horrible but until Wrothgar, the only way to get Ancestor Silk, Rubidite Ingots, etc. You had to go to either Cyrodiil and get lucky with nodes or buy the refined mats in IC with Telvar Stones. You could also decon stuff from WGT and ICP but those dungeons were nightmares to do back then.

Honestly, count your blessings that you never had to experience ESO with all that, it definitely wasn't a high point in the game IMO.

So what about zones now? For example Craglorn used to be a 10+ VR zone how does that translate to VR?

Ok, so all zones (except content released at a previous cap) are scaled up to 160 or match your level if 50 and below, and your attributes caps at 300CP. Once you get passed 300CP the additional CP up to current cap just makes you more powerful?
If this is correct does the zone level remain 160 or do they still scale?
