I'm finding it hard to spot mats to craft. I put a skill point into the skill that raises you ability to spot them by 10%, but I'm still not seeing them. Any hints or standard practices to improve in this area?
You can farm any zone, and some zones are more farmed than others. The starter islands tend to have lots of nodes, but also lots of farmers. You might try zones like Alikir which is easier to see the nodes in. Vvardenfell quite frankly is one of the hardest zones to farm for mats in.
At the first passive, you almost have to be on top of the node to see the glow. And, ironically, it makes it harder to see the nodes from a distance because you don't learn to recognize them. Although the Alchemy Keen Eye is kind of necessary.
Iron and Jute are the hardest ones to see in my opinion, the other tiers of mats show against the game map better.
And, if you have some gold, you can always buy the mats in a guild store.
Also, get in the habit of farming as you go from place to place, you will be amazed at how much you pick up that way. It seems, at least at first, that if you go out to farm, you never see them. But if your just headed to a Delve, you trip over them every 10 meters.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Node positions are pretty much fixed, but the material you get from them half your passive level, half your character level. For example a CP160+ character that has no points invested in clothier will get half the nodes jute, the other half ancestor silk. If it adds 2 points in Tailoring they will be half cotton, half Ancestor silk and so forth. https://elderscrollsonline.wiki.fextralife.com/Trade+Skills. Adding more points in "keen eye" will allow you to see them easily from a distance, but in the long run is not worth it, since top tier materials are quite easy to see due to their dark red color, that stands out in the scenery.
If you are not a maximized crafter the least time consuming way to get them is to search in guild stores. They are usually very cheap there since people who do higher level writs get them regularly from those and want to get rid of them because they are useless. Also simply deconstructing the trash gear that drops from mobs will build up your stocks quite fast, and also level your respective class skill. Note that crafting writs done at lower tier have greatly reduced chances of giving you legendary tempers and only top tier one will have a chance of giving master writs. Surveys are pretty much the same but I recommend saving those until you can collect them at maximum tier.

Note that at first it will only highlight nodes you find after installing. But, after you find a few you can run a batch file to submit and download all nodes discovered by others.
