Why no wands?

With summerset I was really hoping to get 1 handed wands to go with a shield pretty bad. I don't like being magic with no choice but a staff. Stamina has options of 2h weapons, dual wield, sword and shield. All we have as magic is.....staff. I get bored carrying around nothing but a staff all the time. We have fire and lightning and healing and ice sure but at the end it's still just a staff!

Wands would be so cool to mix in with a shield for defense and having cool offensive close range magic skills. I wish this would become a thing.

Because the wand chooses the wizard.

Apparently no wizards here got chosen.

the elder scrolls games don't have wands.

Most MMO don't like wands due to the balancing nightmare they are. ff14 had wands, but stop adding them after the first expansion due to the balancing nightmare and inventory bloat it caused.

a pick up item you can steal/find does not count. Good try though. I was talking about the elder scrolls games in there entirety, not just ESO wands have never been a use able weapon type in any TES, mages use staves.

thanks for cherry picking my post lol.

Should read the rest of my post, rather then do a poor photoshop jobs using 1 pick up items as a basis for argument.

It’s realky quite simple. That’s a gnarled wand. Not very useful.

The real question is why a wand? There isn’t a wand and shield line. There is already a magika tanking line and you haven’t provided reasoning or justification for a second magika based tanking weapon.

That’s why no wand. Just saying you want one isn’t really a reason.

How should you handle dual wield with wands?
Game has two handed, sword and shield, dual wield, desto staff and restro staff.
Can I use an shield and an resto wand? How about an ice staff?
Can I wield and wand and a sword or perhaps destro and resto wand.
Its already more combination of weapons than exist today.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

I mean if you're going to go as far as "it's not in a TES game so we can't use it", why are we using staves for basic attacks? In any of the last 3 games, staves were used as a melee weapon or as an enchanted spell holder. They weren't used to basic attack at will. Hur dur why the change ZOS!?!?!

Probably because it wouldn't be fluid mmo weapon design

    anyways

The biggest issue here is that you can't play a magicka DPS properly anymore without a staff. That's really lame for diversity. They should have clear advantages (like access to health shields over access to consistent dodging and breakouts), but sorcerers in TES never depended on staves to be powerful. It's not really fair that you can't play out the fantasy properly of being a powerful spellsword because you MUST be a staff wielder. There should be more benefits that allow magicka classes to use other weapons, like passives that improve basic attacks with magicka/spell damage, magicka morphs for underused weapon skill lines.

That's ideal though and it's 4 years in so I doubt they'd ever rework balance at that level

Easy. When an enemy attacks you you use wands to stab your own eyes, enemy take pity on you and leave. After that you can be Prophet 2.0

Wands would just be horrible. I think since Harry Potter movies and books, they have become sort of a black sheep of Fantasy, so even if they did exist before in ES lore or any other fantasy based game lore, developers try to avoid them as much as they can. If they did exist or are more or less an unusable loot, the explanation usually is that a wand in this context means a short or thinner staff or is simply the same thing as a staff.

At the end of the day, Harry Potter RP has no place in Elder Scrolls. And using a wand and a shield? That would just look silly! (I think I have seen it in Dragon's Dogma, but I'm not sure). Imagine coming across an enemy blocking with his magnificent shield and then he pulls out a twig! I mean, it could be a powerful twig and all but still. I'd just sheathe my weapon and die of laughter!

No wands. Please! Ever! Elder Scroll has staves and staves only!

I would much rather have spell equipped as a weapon, since in Elder Scrolls lore, a staff is not required for the magic users - it does make them more powerful.

I'm with you in principle, I hate staves - but to be honest think of them as Wands!! Hence I've stuck with MagDW all this time, but its going to be hard to continue with after Summerset.

Unsure why they are nerfing magika weopon diversity.

I wouldn't want a 'wand' tho to be honest. A 1H and Rune or even 1H and gauntlet (i'm hoping the fire / shock / frost gauntlets in the data mined crown store are a new skill line - even if it just copied the Destro lines to a glove! - but I know that wishful thinking)

Comeon ZOS, at least buff DW damage post summerset - at best new skill line

I'm reading my son The Hobbit and Gandalf is described as using a wand. I assume Tolkien interchanges wand and staff. When Gandalf dual wields he uses sword and staff. Sword and wand? Lol

After all, we had new class (-skilllines) and a lot of other skill lines added. I think it's about time to add new weapons. On the other hand, they shot themselfes in the food by creating more than 60 different motifs. It'll be a huge pain to design so many different models for a new weapon. So my guess is no wands, no spears, polearms or anything. No new weapons ever. I find it sad though.
I'm not a huge fan of wands, but a bit more diversity for magicka weapons would be more than welcome. Like dual wield magic orbs or something. I still hope that the datamined gloves are at least a reskin for staves.

Cause this isn't a teenage movie about a wizard school? :dizzy:

But for real, I think a magicka based one handed weapon would be nice. I would prefer some kind of summoned sword or a focus crystal over a wand. And on the point of "staff" or "wand", in German both translate to the same thing (Zauberstab). I guess that does a good job of showing how interchangeable they are.

^ image above, the Morrowind splash screens even the summerset marketing shots have the same 'orb' and 1H.

Sadly we hyped this pre Morrowind and it was confirmed no new skill line just marketing.

I live in 0.00001% hope those gauntlets are the answer but know it isn't. ZOS wants Wizards with wands not battle mages.
