Why no wands?

With summerset I was really hoping to get 1 handed wands to go with a shield pretty bad. I don't like being magic with no choice but a staff. Stamina has options of 2h weapons, dual wield, sword and shield. All we have as magic is.....staff. I get bored carrying around nothing but a staff all the time. We have fire and lightning and healing and ice sure but at the end it's still just a staff!

Wands would be so cool to mix in with a shield for defense and having cool offensive close range magic skills. I wish this would become a thing.

Why do mages even have to use staves? Can't they use their bare hands?

The only time that an Elder Scrolls game has actually used wands was in Daggerfall (they were very useless, but they were in the game), and they've never been brought up again. Presumably because we have staves, which are all-together a better magic item. I'd say that wands are probably for children if anything, since they aren't powerful enough to wield a staff, or hold a magical item (like a book or some kind of rune foci).

Personally I'd really love a number of addional items, for example wands, orbs, books, relics whatever you name it; each adding special magical powers or even abilities. But I don't think zos and playerbase will find it fitting for the sort of "realistic" gear theme that is in place. Can't get too magically weird with Elder Scrolls it seems.

I just get so extremely bored of the staff overall. I like magic but getting into actual fights why I use a magplar with sword and shield as it's really the only thing that works but nothing is more boring then jabs other then using nothing but a staff all the time on every single magic build

    Elder Scrolls is for adults.

There are, thankfully, no children in this game so no need for children's toys.

As long as it's not breaking any significant canon lore wise I think wands would be cool, it certainly fits with the developer's ethos about player choice in the way their character plays.

Its a channeling thing, they channel magicka through their staves in order to hit their enemies harder from range while at the same time being able to use it as a form of "blocking" in coming melee attacks.

Generally speaking not including gameplay, they actually do both just depends on how they fight. Sometimes the staves are even used for special things or the stave in of itself has unique and special properties.

Not just that the idea of a "wand" just isn't elder scrolls staffs are just elder scrolls shtick. Always have been.
Ah, e-communities - the "pinnacle" of the internet............yeah, right.

Nope, they have staves that are categorized as "Blunt weapons".

Wands are by no means puny in the right hands. I agree with the Op but it would have to be done right, with well thought out animations to go with them.

I could of swore i had the option for wands in morrowind, must be a different game i am thinking of. Regardless id like to see some other option besides staves. Spellbook, wand, totem, rune, giant decoder ring.. or what if every weapon had a magicka skill set and a stamina skill set. Like a magic based dagger or a stamina based dagger. Something like that.

Wrong. He is described as using a wand - because Tolkien uses wand and staff to describe the same thing.

A staff in ESO is just a focus, so literally anything will work - a magical sword, a scepter, a floating ball of sparkly cow poop, whatever. Just give us something else besides staves.

Ooo! Add crafted magical effigies, which give you a spell penetration & crit bonus vs. a specific type of enemy depending on the effigy. Some effigies affect a broad range, such as undead or daedra, but have a lower stats; others are more specific, such as skeletons or dremora, but have higher stats. They would also have a corresponding visual making them unique.

Because they look awful. The way our characters hold them is just awkward and goofy looking, the combat animations are terrible....the running animation with a staff out looks like something out of a low budget claymation.

    Feels bad, man.

I seem to remember a woodcrafting book that details about staves. Saying that the wood needs to be strong enough to channel the magic going through it - I can't see a wand being sturdy enough to handle the level of magic a person would cast through it.

hmm wands might be fun if they do less damage than a staff. I wouldn't use them, but others might. A wand and shield build might be good for a tank, but again, I wouldn't do it, others might.
