I remember this time well yeah, but here's an idea for ZoS that seems fair enough :Best advice, always look at the heads of the NPCs, you steal less that way.
If your on PC, there is an addon or two that can prevent accidental stealing.
Now, where did all this come from? In the original release and for about 6 or so months after, all outside stuff was one big static. You could not interact with the world objects and it just felt weird. Individual world objects were introduced and the world felt more alive. All was good until the Justice system came along and made most of those items owned.
So, until they fix this, and they have not in the past 3 years, so don't hold your breath, look at the NPC faces before activating them.

One just want to take a Pledge quest (or check it back) at Undauntable spot. But the clic goes to the weapon and you "steal it unwittingly".
How does this even make sense ??
My orc character is religiously against robbery.
There's quite a difference between talking to some mercenary and unwittingly seize his stuff. Some plixels and one clic shouldn't be enought to mix up...
Please ZoS, at least, add a validation-option to verify if one wants to rob the exhibited stuff instead of automatic theft.
(Or does this exist somewhere hidden in the options menu??)
