ESO vs TES *opinion

Well, we have to see, that TES was not consistent in many things over the years as well. Not even racial abilities were consistent between different chapters of the TES games. And ESO is another interpretation of what Tamriel could be like 1000 years before the 3rd era. I am not a fan of classes for example, and TES avoided to have classes, but offered them as an option - in form of a named collection of choices, which one would otherwise make freely.

Having classes and a focus on MMO-typical roles of DD, healer and tank changed the whole way in which the TES universe is approached in ESO. On top of it rather strange changes to racial abilities changed the character TES had in the past. Now it is ESO and I guess we will have to live with it for a couple more years to come - because Bethesda is not going to give us TES VI anytime soon. So if we like it or not, this is what TES currently is and will be for the next years to come - take it or leave it.

There are technical limitations. In Skyrim a lot of objects are dynamic and can be moved around. To enable that in an MMO would require running very involved physics simulation on the server and synchronise it across all the players. Present technology can't cope with a multiplayer environmental being that dynamic. Consequently the world is more static.

Then there are the play issues. Handling all the players at different stages in different quests. Sometimes players see the same place differently. Many times the world exists in many states at once. Some quests can be done out of sequence and make the continuity strange. Most quests result in no meaningful lasting change in the world because different players can choose different things.

It felt alien at first but I got used to it.
I look forward to technology improving how dynamic the world can be.

Anyone else feel something wrong with ESO? I started out TES games with Skyrim and I'm currently playing Morrowind (TES3). I noticed something different when I decided to play both ESO and Morrowind at the same time. The other TES games feel FAR more alive. I don't know what it is, but ESO npc and enemies just feel like fixed algorithms.

I would say that you've got it backwards. It started out as a generic TES themed MMO and has slowly become MORE like TES.

That is not to say it's actually a true TES game, but they have made a lot of progress towards making it feel more like one.

I admit I miss the kill cam.

But npc's are static so players don't have to run all over the place trying to hunt down the one they need.

I think they have done a great job of making ESO feel like a TES game.
They have come a LONG way from beta!

And just FYI, some of the ZoS staff came from Bethesda, like did you know Rich Lambert worked on Oblivion?
Remember, ZoS and BGS are the same company..

My 2 drakes, TES3 was the best SPG and ESO has done a great job at being a MMO and a TES game. Hard thing to balance.
