Most 4 man dungeons can be finished solo even on veteran mode and the rest can be completed with a minimum of 2. I can't really think of a mechanic that ties more than 1 player at a time, or more than 2 levers or plates need to be activated to pass a gate.

Too many times we've gotten a group of 3 and can't get a 4th for whatever reason, or we get 4 and then a 5th gets left out.
A dymanic arena would solve this. Most likely not realistically feasible, though one can dream.
