Even in real life when you go to a shop it is usually clear who is the vendor and who a customer.
Try lookinf for instance for the tailor vendor and you keep approaching all the players who stand around the same area doing their tailoring!
Or for instance I was shooting pirates on the beach and kept attacking players as well, thinking that they were enemies.

In 30 years of playing MMO's I have never had this problem, not even in really old games. I think it is just a lazy way of making a game. Let everybody wear the same armor and use any weapon they like. Well how is that for being lazy to create variety.
Make all dungeons free for all, no instances. How is tht for lazy production. But charge top bucks and monthly fee. Nice!

Sorry, was there a question buried in there?

It makes sense that most members of the same race will have basically the same physical structure, to the point int that you would have trouble telling them apart without looking at their faces.

It took me a little while, but I now can usually tell them apart--and I like that they aren't overly distinguished. It makes it a more immersive world for me.

Thats funny, I wish there was more distinctions.

I had to enable the health bars, it helped.

It's easy to distinguish real humans from NPCs.
Real humans have their level number followed by their name, e.g. 5. Bjornolfr Steel-Shaper.

Generic NPCs have only a name, no level number, e.g. Queen Ayrenn.

And enemy NPCs have a level number but a generic name, like 5. Bootlegger.

I think he's saying that a merchant should be distinct in some way. Instead of looking like adventurer themselves.

I altered my settings so that Players have a HP bar above them and NPCs don't, This way I can distinguish the difference.

As for npc's looking a little different to differentiate...I could probably agree with that, sometimes it's tough to distinguish when there is 50 people in the area, if you don't already know exactly where the npc is located. Now finding them in the masses is second nature to me.

Though I have to disagree with the dungeon thought, as there definitely are instanced dungeons in the game, you should try them.
