Are training dummies a good metric or just for training??

I think delves and random goblin tribes are a good metric... Training dummies are just for that: training...

Is this a troll post or are you serious? If you're serious then the answer is yes and no. It depends on which type one is using for data and there are things to consider. Such as time on target, party buffs, self buffs. It's quite varied.

Overland creatures are not a proper way to gauge damage numbers because most can be one shot with any ST DPS above 12k.

Training dummies will always give the highest metrics because they just stand there.
They are good for getting your rotation down and highlighting any spamming you do that makes you run out of resources too quick.

I like solo'ing dolmens and trying to defeat some of the WB's to get a good idea of what my dps is really like which is usually between 25-30K dps(more towards the 25K though). And if something unnerves you during that you can also see that your dps drops to like 10-15K because you lost your mojo :)

So... I'm hearing they are good for training... (getting your rotation down and highlighting any spamming you do that makes you run out of resources too quick is training right?)

That's for me. That's what I use the dummies for. Higher dps numbers over time show that I am improving.

Overland mobs die way too quickly to give you any sort of good metric of the DPS you can do. The dummy is good for learning a rotation, as messing up and trying to figure what to do next won't kill you. Once you have the rotation down to muscle memory, the best metric is to actually do Group Dungeons and Trials with the rotation.

Discussing topics which may have differing opinions is hardly "bait" and calling it that is baiting, itself... don't you think??

Getting perfect rotation is really useful, and it's pretty good to know what your limit is

but cheese builds for dummy DPS are not nearly the same as builds you actually play with

I've seen a dps improvement training on delves as my CP and gear goes up, however this is in no way a good metric because nearly all delve bosses can be killed with sub-optimal DPS before you even run into sustain issues, and you're doing multitarget dps meaning the numbers are very different.

On top of that, delve enemies have like, no resist. norm and vet dungeons are waaaaaaay harder because you need to hit a higher penetration level.

I can get 26k on single targets with low health, anyone can do that. Only good players can keep dps sustained at that level, with mechanics thrown in, and all, I can't, so I don't do vet as dps.

Yes and no. They are good for training and learning a rotation, AND they can let you know if your dps is raising or not (that is, if you are mastering that rotation).

However, they are not strictly indicative of how you will perform in a trial, since that depends on many other factors (i.e. your knowledge of the mechanics, your reactions under stress, the work of your teammates etc.). That is, a 40K dps with target dummy doesn't mean that you will do 40K dps in a trial: you could do much less or much more.

I get the sense that folks want to know your training dummy parses to get a sense of whether or not you know your rotation before they waste time with you in a dungeon if you don’t.

Soloing dungeons (normal and vet) and maybe soloing World Bosses even soloing in PvP will make you a better player if you are persistent and don’t mind dying a lot. If you spend the time figuring out WHY you died and learn from it you will improve. Cheesing training dummies won’t teach you much beyond rotation and sustain in the most basic sense.

DPS in and of it self is an odd metric. If stuff dies quickly no one should care.

I get the sense that people need to work on their own rotations and stop worrying about everyone else. You do you, and allow leaders to lead without micromanaging... I have gotten to the point that I weave light attacks into my rotation more and more just to:

    1) Charge-up my spectral bow...
    2) Understand the division of labor in a trial...
    3) Show people that putting requirements on numbers is not as important as getting the job done...
    4) Irritate "that guy..."

Sometimes killing things quickly is not the best solution... For example in the Vaults of Madness... killing the last boss too quickly means people won't learn when to stay away from the boss or when to move in closer to the last boss...

Dummies may or may not have resist, I have no idea at all, never use them as I don't main dps

Delve enemies however, they have pretty mild resist, so you could end up pulling absurd damage and then vet dungeon time comes around and suddenly all that might and magic is gone

For practising rotations then yes, very much

For accurate damage measurements compared to dungeons and trials, then no, bosses have diffrent setups, resistances and also don’t generally just sit there like a plant pot, regardless of how good a tank they simply can’t stop the boss moving if it’s scripted to do so

It's good for gauging damage you can do on things that don't hit back, and you can stand still if you wish.

They’re a good metric for gauging how well you’d do on tougher training dummies.
