Fire and lightning have different effects.
Usually which one you choose would depend on your class / build.

I use a magsorc with lightning, because for me the off balance damage is well worth it. If on a magdk, I’d probably lean towards fire as their abilities synergise better with fire.

For the Perfect Asylum staff specifically, the differences are minimal depending on your play style. If you just light attack all the time, I guess it wouldn’t matter which staff you use, if you tend to heavy attack, then lightning staff would be better imo as the heavy attack is channeled and ‘ticks’ several times.

Just for reference though, when Summerset is released, asylum staff, even perfect asylum, might not be worth it.

Getting a psijic skill that basically does the same effect.

Will be better imo to use vMA staff backbar then run 5/5/2 on front bar

Lightning staffs buff all AoE Damage by 8% and are easier to heavy attack with.

Inferno staffs buff all single target damage by 8%.

Does your build have more AoE damage or single target damage?

on sorcs it might be beneficial to have more shockdamage (not only elemental blockade), since they have increased lightning damage and a passive execute based on it. on a pet build it might be good, since also the little skampy's pulse i aoe damage. maybe you need to consider netch's touch set too.

Current BiS for magsorc single target (FP build) is dual inferno with a perfected inferno on frontbar. There are situations (AoE, doing lots of heavies) when you could use a lightning staff.

Netch’s Touch is not a really a good set currently. It is definitely not BiS for FP sorc nor do I think there are any petsorc variations that it is BiS for.
