How do people play DPS since sustain nerf??

I took a long break from the game and came back right after the sustain nerf. The game had changed so much in that time, I didn't remember what sustain felt like before the nerf. I have quite a few different characters. As long as I don't neglect sustain completely, it's usually not an issue. Some characters use skills that help with sustain, some use a heavy attack rotation, some use sustain food/gear, or a combination. Generally the only time I ever have an issue with sustain with some characters is in long tricky boss fights, especially if the boss is constantly moving. My solution is to just switch to a heavy attack rotation for a few cycles and then I go back to my normal rotation. Sometimes in PvP it's an issue, happens if I panic (mash buttons), or if my opponent is using resource draining poisons. In PvP my solution is... well I kinda just die and try to learn from my mistakes.

For a stamina character the most efficient trade-off of gaining regen / cost reduction comes from running 7 medium armor instead of 5/1/1, you'll gain 656 crit rating, 8% Regen and 4% cost reduction while losing the undaunted & heavy armor stat buffs.

But I personally just run Dubious Camoran with 5/1/1 since I need more resources than 7 medium alone can provide.

In PvE.. as someone who prefers more overall weapon dam over stam/maj regen, just have to AC/combo heavy attack with every main attack skills; i.e. heavy w/Dizzying Swing, heavy/Biting Jabs, heavy/Pierce Armor, heavy/Rapid Strikes, heavy flame or lightning/Force Pulse, etc. Sometimes, the heavy just doesn't hit right, though. From time to time, I see my heavy with the greatsword completely missing the add or boss; not registering any damage or stam regen. I'm like.. how the hell a big arse greatsword just not hitting a big arse target?! Hell, I played and messed around with just going about and heavy attacking things just to test it out, and on occasions, my heavy would miss or not register any hits for like 2 or 3 consecutive swings. What the f is going on around here?! Oh shoot, sorry, I lost track.. rambling, going off the tangent a bit here. You should always regain stam or maj if heavy hits right. Plus, I like the Revitalizing passive with the 5-piece heavy. Having Mooncalf or Arcanist in the upper 14% or 15% helps. Throw on a Shacklebreaker set for stam; can't go wrong here.

For PvP.. well, either you're sporting a set/build with 2-3k or over regen, (probably taking all day to kill things, though) then you're either a stam or magblade popping more cloak than not just to get away so you can regen in hidden mode, or you're hauling ass away, or running around trees, boulders or shagged Cliffside so you can regen. My NORD Nightblade doesn’t have sustain problems in PVE.

All the others should be fine. Like others mention, weave heavy attacks in the rotation.

Some good info on here, and as part of my build (Khajit, arguably one of the more difficult to sustain, for a NB):

    Leeching Strikes
    Dubious Cameron
    HA below ~40% Stam
Stormfist (underrated IMO, and not just because it helps with regen)
    All Medium

The other piece to keep in mind is how you are healing-if you don’t need much, great, but depending on group dynamics, you may need to add something in that area. Obviously, Vigor is the best outright heal for stamina builds, but try to wean yourself off of it if you can-it is relatively expensive. At the risk of stating the obvious, this is as much about boosting stamina regen as it is about minimizing the use/cost of any (non-DPS stamina) abilities, whatever they may be.

I use normal Health/Stamina blue food, and am not a Vampire, and have no issues. All I needed to do was incorporate HAs into the rotation rather than only LAs.

Yeah, everyone agrees the change was annoying.. But it really made the game require much more skill to actually git good. People actually have to incorporate strategies into how they play, and how they manage resources. While before it was more or less, use your skills in the right order (at least that's how I remember it)

Isn’t it still this way? Only now heavy attack is one of those skills you have to use in the right order?

Personally I quit right after the sustaim nerfs, it was so annoying running out of recources amd just heavy attacking and still getting barely anu recources back, it killed my dps and it made VMA imposssible for me.

I just came back a week ago to prepare for summerset, but seems the same problem exists. It the biggest game killer ever for me even though everything they have added after is just great.

Can someone tell me how do dps sustain now?

    Stop playing a mag sorc.

ZOS does not know how to "convey" the message any stronger.
I guess, a next patch you'll be perma-banned when you play mag sorc, just to make the "hint" clearer.

What's wrong with mag sorcs? I mean they're not my favorite class to play but they're perfectly viable.

On my stam characters, I use Spriggans jewellery, regen enchants and Orzoga's pies 5k health +stam regen. pool ca 30k stam)
On mag characters, Mother's sorrow jewellery, regen enchants and Orzoga's red frothgar 5k health + mag regen. pool ca 30k magicka
+/-75 CP in the appropriate regen

I use Orzoga's because it gives the big health boost, so no need to put points in health, thus a bigger stam (or magicka) pool. I rarely have to use heavy attacks, although I play PVE only, so I don't know if that would work in PVP.

I use x3 resource recovery glyphs on all my characters.
My stamina DK has about 1.6k sta recovery and needs to heavy attack a few times but with dual wield it's not that bad.
My stamina warden has 2.1k sta recovery and never runs out of resources. She does not need to heavy attack, ever.

I also use Draugr Hulk on both my stamina characters. In my opinion it is a must have set for stamina characters. It boosts your damage and gives you more max resources. The more you have, the more you get back from synergies. My stamina warden receives ~1.7K stamina every time she uses a synergy.

You also need to learn the correct usage of abilites. When I started playing this game a year ago, I constantly spammed steel tornado to kill several mobs at once. In overland it was fine but in dungeons I ran out of resources after the first mob encounter. Then I wondered how I am out of resources already. It took me a long time to realize it is meant to be used as an execute ability and not as a spammable.
