[Poll] Non-Exclusive Motif Pages in Crown Crates (updated)

Updated to clearly state this is not a crown crate exclusive any more.
Hi everyone,

We appreciate everyone’s continued feedback and thoughts on this topic, and understand the concerns you have. As such, we will add the ability to obtain the Pyandonean Motif Chapters through fishing, as well as in the Psijic Vault Crown Crate. As the Maormer are also known as the Sea Elves, it’s fitting that you’ll find these Motif Chapters while fishing in and around Summerset Isle. The plan is to implement this change in the next week or two on the PTS, so it will be in-game when Update 18 launches and the Pisjic Vault Crown Crates become available to those who pre-purchased the Summerset Chapter.

Thanks again for taking the time to let us know your thoughts, everyone, and we’re excited to have you try out the in-game component on the PTS very soon.

We don't have a poll about this yet so I'm making one (because it's not official until someone makes a poll).

It's in the relevant section and as close as we can get to giving the teams making these changes direct feedback.

For those not aware on the PTS right now it looks like there will be a new Crown Store exclusive motif (Maormer) which is delivered via Crown Crates in individual pages. Not only does this force those who want all the style options to buy crates it also dilutes an already badly stacked crate loot table.

Do note this isn't confirmed yet, but ZOS have yet to step in and stop speculation and rumours and past experience tells us once something like this appears on PTS in crates it's very likely to go live.

This has now been confirmed by Jess in the following post.
Hey all,

As with all systems, we read your feedback on Crown Crates and are always looking for more ways to make them a rewarding experience. One of the pieces of feedback on Crown Crates we heard was that the blue-tier items didn’t feel as rewarding as our players would like. For as long as Crown Crates have been active, you have been guaranteed at least one blue-quality card or better in every Crown Crate, so these items are some of the most common Crown Crate items.

To address this feedback, starting with the Psijic Vault Crown Crates, we looked to improve the blue-quality Crown Crate rewards by adding an exclusive Motif – the Pyandonean Motif – to that tier. The goal was to add a bit more excitement to receiving a blue-tier item from a crate. However, we also wanted players to feel like there was more than one way to get this Motif, so we made sure that you will be able to purchase the Motif pages with Crown Gems. That way, if you don’t get it inside a crate, you’re not prevented from acquiring it all together. The Motif pages are also account-bound items not collectibles, which means that you can convert every one you get into Crown Gems if you want. It’s also worth noting that all players have the opportunity to receive free Crown Crates during special events, as well as through the future Daily Rewards system.

Watch for full details regarding the Motif pages and how you can obtain them in our upcoming Psijic Vault Crown Crate article.

Question: Do you like Crown Crate exclusive motif pages?

I buy crates. I am for full books being a gold drop in a crate, or full motifs even crown only motifs, because tough nuts, not everything is free.

But per page in a crate?
    No.

    That's just going too far.

Paying a fixed price for a motif in the store...fine. Wish they weren't, but ok.

Locking the pages behind a GAMBLING paywall is really really distasteful and a giant leap OVER the line, not just pushing the boundaries.

Particularly as it's a motif, part of a major in-game collectible hunt.

Gambling with real money should be nowhere near a major game system such as this!

Shouldn't this vote be more of indifference than desire for them then? Most rational players are fine with the game being profitable and making money via a store, the issues comes with the continued push to make more money at the expense of player enjoyment.

Sell this motif as an outright purchase, sure I would whale and buy it. However breaking it up into parts and putting it in the most consumer unfriendly location possible is a huge slap in the face to the community of the game.

That's what is so frustrating about all this. I can kick up a fuss, I can have a good moan in all these threads but I feel entirely powerless to change a damn thing about this area of the games development.
Marketing/Monetisation does what it wants feedback and damage to the game be damned.

Just no. I get crown exclusive motifs or full books in crates. Especially since up until current pts all books in crates were available through gameplay, and crates were just an alternative way for ppl who have money, but no time to grind. I bought both kinds myself.

But single pages in random crates, alongside with consumable trash... that's just too much. Don't cut the branch you're sitting on - there's always a limit to how much your players can take!

I usually spend a bit of money on crown store items almost every paycheck and get 15-crates pack each season, but if this *** goes live - I will never spend another dollar on crowns.

I hate the idea of crown exclusive motifs anyway and I’m glad there have only been two of them until now. I have spent HUGE amounts of time in game trying to farm motifs to fill my own style books and I enjoyed every minute of it. Completing collections is a major part of the game for me. It’s a fun, fluffy goal that keeps me logged in. Individual pages in crown crates... I dislike where this is going. Next time it will be costumes broken up into head, hands, feet, etc... After that, mounts dropping in 8 parts (Collect them all to activate!). All RNG, all the time. In game, I don’t mind. It gives me a goal to work on and spend time on. In the cash shop it’s a totally different story.

A business is obliged to be profitable, we all get that. No reasonable person objects to ESO having a cash revenue stream to keep the game healthy and stable. It’s the pay to gamble and usually lose that I just can’t stand. I don’t want pay to win but I won’t tolerate pay to lose either. I think I’m done with crowns and crates for now. I’d rather have zero pages in my collection than be constantly reminded of my frustration over this.

It is, in my opinion, the worst thing they have done in the monetization system so far. I have tu put more and more effort to push it away from my consciousness and pretend it doesn't exist so I can keep enjoying the game.
I personnally hate these Crate-Exclusive pages even more than the existence of the Apex mounts behind a hard-RNG-paywall, and that the existence of microtransactions in Skyrim.

The day where, for some reason, I am perma-locked away from being a master crafter, is most probably the day where my journey in Tamriel will end.

Also, if I become so utterly disgusted by a company's monetization system that it pushes me out of a paracosm I deeply love, I can't possibly imagine how it wouldn't affect the likelihood of me purchasing other games of Bethesda, Zenimax, and all their related studios, including TES VI.

That being said, obviously, I doubt the loss of one or two customers will change their way to handle these issues.

This leaves me feeling powerless and just sad to see how what I used to love is losing its integrity and getting more and more corrupt by corporate greed. (Yes, greed, for there is a difference between making a profit and squeezing every possible dollar out of a fanbase.)
I guess this will make it easier to empathize with that Altmer we saw in the trailer, who returns to see her once-paradisiac land infected by corruption.

I dont buy crates but if their data suggest players do and players will buy crates for these than who are you to tell them they cant. If you dont like it dont buy but this mentality that if people dont play a hobby the way you do they are somehow in the wrong or destroying a game is sad and pathetic.

I guarentee there are more peoples ok with this than the vocal minority throwing a fit on the forums.

I almost rage quit when I opened my free Psijic Vault crate on the PTS and got a leg motif. I only bought a few crates in the past with the "free" ESO+ crowns and I don't see myself doing that ever again if this is really the direction ZOS is taking.

If motif pages replaced the useless consumables, then fine. Either way, people who want to collect all the motifs are absolutely screwed unless they're willing to buy hundreds of crates.

Its a blatant attempt to cash in on people's need to complete collections. I mean, really, what are you going to do with just 1 of the Maomer motif pieces?

Either you walk away or you buy more crates, and there won't be a smart loot system, so you'll get duplicates, and if you happen to get the whole Maomer book at some point in that search...yeah, its designed to make people buy more darned crates, pure and simple.

Its like I'm playing Pokemon. Gotta catch 'em all!

Pages in crates is scummy. There are a lot of variables that could be adjusted so I'd be ok with it but with the current implementation, it's vile. I'd use stronger words, but I'm sure it would offend someone.

I am torn on this one because it is borderline what i consider acceptable for an item in the crown store. The reason being is motifs are used to do writs. So for me to be Ok with it one of the following would have to happen:

    1) It could never become part of master writs. This makes it strictly a vanity item.

    2) It would have to have changes made to it. Instead of automatic gem extraction( which from my understanding it is), gem extraction would have to be optional and it would have to be made tradeable so it could be sold to other players.

    3) It would have to be a limited time "exclusive" before it is released in some way in game that allows it to be earned.

The 86% complainig about the store were the same people complaining about sub fees and wanting f2p b2p games. Well congrats boys you created this yourself.

I dont buy store item with real money i pay a sub and use what they give me. Right now the cool thing to do in the "video game forum community" is complain about the stores. I find it ironic and hilarious as most of you brought this on yourself.

Do they think a gimmick like this is going to convince the people who don’t buy crates to start buying them? Or convince the people who buy a few every season to buy a lot more?

It seems more likely to rub even the people who buy crates the wrong way.

It sure doesn’t make me want to start buying crates. It signals a trend that makes me want to buy fewer crowns actually.
