Any Tips for furnishing my "Starter House"

So, in my other thread, I asked about beginning housing and some recommendations, and I got tons of useful info, and basically it turned into zillow for eso, which was awesome.

I ended up buying sleek creek, but I'm sure it won't be my last house....I'm a bit addicted now. Also, at this point in the game, there's not really that much that you need gold for, so it feels good to actually spend some rather than just horde it like Smaug.

Anyway, now that I have a house I just had a few questions about basic furnishing. Don't worry, I'm not specifically asking about decorating tips (although any links to sites about this would be appreciated).

For basic furnishing needs, is it cheaper to buy the basics from the npc, or to craft them yourself? I have maxed crafters on multiple characters, and have accumulated alot of mats and recipes, so I"m guessing crafting would be easier for me.

Any items I should specifically look for on the trade board?

What's the site where I can put in the item and it gives you a preview?

As always any other tips are greatly appreciated. I looked at some of the ESO cribs videos, and the creativity is truly mindblowing and intimidating.

Thanks

ESO Fashion has most furnishings listed with pictures - you can search by type, style, etc.

In my experience - if you have the mats it's better to craft the "big" stuff or things you only need one or two of yourself.

If you need multiples of things for cluttering purposes, like barrels or sacks for example - I try to find them cheap on guild stores because that's a TON of mats for barrels.

I've never bought furniture crafting mats, so I don't know what the value is there.

Flip things around, upside down, sink them into walls/floors - you never know how things will look! That ugly candleabra may look great if you bury the base :)

One thing to note with building your own is that the materials required have next to no correlation to the size of the item. One piece of furniture will need the same amount of its style material, "temper". etc. as any other. So a footstool needs the same as a double bed. There may be a variation in the amount of, say, heartwood involved, but the item count is the key.

You also have furnishing slots that are oblivious to item size. A basket of apples counts one for the basket, and one for each apple you put in it.

So start with the big stuff, and make it yourself, then clutter with bought items (or make them slowly over time as the materials accumulate).

You'll also find that some things are buy-only, like stone blocks, and things you want to use, like staircases, don't even exist.

Most basic furnishings - beds, tables, etc. - aren't for sale from the in-game vendors. They do sell a wooden stool and a crude small tea table, but most of what they sell are plants, rocks, crates, etc.

So, you will either have to craft these items yourself or buy from other players at guild traders - or have a friend/guildie make items to order.

And remember, it can be a slow process, but it's fun to see a home slowly get filled with items as you decorate. Also, don't be afraid to scrap something that didn't quite work out how you wanted or to play around with ideas/layouts. I've fiddled a lot with my Velothi Reverie - it's gone through several incarnations, with rooms switching purposes, etc. Then, as I see others' creations, it inspires me to do something different or add in something new.

Bottom line is to have fun decorating, get inspiration from other players, take your time, and oh...HAVE FUN! :D

Some tips. I own...hum...twenty homes? And I sell hundreds of furnishing a week. I’m on PS4 NA...my prices might not reflect all servers.

    1. Buy or make furnishings? The mats that go into items are somewhat standard. As a result, as a rule of thumb I’d say a purple furniture items costs $7000 to make yourself. A blue is more like $3000. It varies, of course. But here’s how I calculate it: $4500 for 4 mastic, $1500 for 10-20 heartwood/runes, $1,000 various other mats.

When I sell furnishings, I try to offer a deal. I price my purple wood items around $10k. So keep this in mind...if you have the recipe knowledge and mats it can make sense to craft an item, but if you’d have to buy a recipe it make be cheaper to just buy the items.

    2. ESO Fashion has previews of furnishings. You can also turn preview on in guild stores. When you need a sofa, go to a big guild store and set the filter on sofas. You can then browse what’s in the store...you may not find all possible items, but you should get a good idea of what’s in the game.

    3. Know your “roof.” There’s a lot of invisible space in a home you can use. Sleek Creek’s invisible ceiling is at the very tip top of the spire on the front of the house. Furnishings can extend past this, but you cannot. My Sleek Creek has a few towering redwoods with a ramp leading up to a treehouse and spectacular view of lower Reapers.

    4. Achievement vendors carry some really cool stuff...but the cost adds up. I recommend browsing ESO Fashions achievement vendor list...get an idea what’s out there. There might be some items you want that will replace craftable items.

    5. Consider a “warehouse” if you really expand your homesteading. I use Mormouth Keep in Bangkorai as a place to stow all my extra furnishings. You might find you buy or make more than you need, and having a place to store it is helpful. I have an entire wall in the keep covered with paintings, which I choose from when decorating a place.

    6. Items you might consider for Sleek Creek (off the top of my head):

    Redguard firepit, Stone;
    Redguard counter, grill;
Redguard or hlaalu bookcases that are filled,
Redguard bench (this is a giant stone arc that is more a counter than a bench. It can be used on the patio)
    Wedding lamp (hews achievement vendor)
(In general, I like to mix redguard in with a Khajiit place. It still looks middle eastern, but has a lot of more attractive pieces. Like the redguard sofas and chairs still match but aren’t tattered and pink)

    7. Ideas for a major Sleek Creek renovation (ideas for the daring):

A major treehouse addition (my approach. My sench all love up there)

Encasing the lower patio to create a downstairs indoor space (harder than it sounds...be prepared for a true project)

Building a major bar on the patio. My island has a pirate deck and is home to the world famous “sky shard bar”. It’s about the size of a real life large restaurant bar, stocked with liquors and glassware and supplies. This was a fun project. I wanted to add a sushi bar, but I haven’t figured out how to make rolls yet.

The DWEMER INVASION. Bursting forth from underground, the dwemer have invaded Sleek Creek, with centurions and spiders running amok. Some unseen force is extended pipes and mechanisms up into the previously tranquil and tastefully decorated home. Has an invasion of Rawlhka begun??? (I’ve never see anything like this...I just now thought it up. It could be pretty cool).
