Is blacksmithing harder

rorywatts96
I was wondering if anyone else found that there black smithing skill went up a lot slower than their other professions. I have put a lot more effort into black smithing but it hasn't gone up as many levels as something like provisioning even though I haven't put much effort into provisioning. Also if blacksmithing is meant to be like this. Thanks for any help

Problem is if you are doing blacksmithing you're probably wearing a lot of the heavy armors and using the weapons. So you don't disenchant / deconstruct them as much where as if you aren't focused on using the items like bows or leather / cloth armor, you deconstruct them more - which levels you up faster.

Deconstructing greens tends to give more XP toward your prof than actually crafting them. The more you deconstruct the faster you level really.

All three gear creation professions take a lot more effort than provisioning, alchemy and enchanting. Blacksmithing is actually easier than clothier or woodworking, though, because you can make a lot more things.

Provisioning goes up ridiculously fast, yes ;)

I've found that as a heavy armor wearing melee type, if I replace all my armor and weapons every two levels, and deconstruct everything I find that I'm not using, blacksmithing levels at the rate I need it to, which is to say I can add a material skill point when I get to the next tier of materials in the world.

i wonder if u get the same xp when you create high level item(lvl 4 item with 1 more material) with extra materials and create low level item without extra material (lvl 1)?
  • rorywatts96
Ok thanks. I do deconstruct all the items I don't use and research them if I can. My character type is the same as yours srikandi but I find that woodworking goes up quicker but I see your point. I had a go at creating the best items I could even though I wouldn't be able to wear them and that put it up a bit more. Also I am still only using iron so you may not get much xp from that.

@waadoya‌ You do get more XP for creating higher level items. It's far more effective to spend the extra materials on crafting one higher level item vs two level 1 items. If your crafting for XP stick to an item like a dagger that requires few materials and craft the maximum level you can. Then deconstruct. I'm not sure if item level affects the XP or material return from deconstructing though.

    Ok thanks

If you hover over your experience bar, you can see exact values so you can test how much xp you gain from different things.
  • rorywatts96
I found that you get the same amount of xp for making a iron dagger (228) as you do for a chestpiece with and enchantment. Both were the max level I could make them. Then for a maple bow max level (level 14) I got 400 and something xp. So I think you do get less for black smithing skills

I noticed this too and was talking to others in my guild about it. I did a lot of crafting in the PTS beta and got to know things fairly well, and in game now, woodworking and leatherworking are levelling much much faster.

I'm certain something isn't working quite the way it should.
  • rorywatts96
Yeah I'm thinking the same. Hopefully it will be fixed to level quicker.

I find the leveling too fast...I am 8.lvl and my blacksmithing is 5, which allows me to put skillpoint to do steel stuff required at level 15. So I think I outleveled blacksmithing now

If you think about it blacksmithing being slower makes sense. Someone wanting to use medium armour and a bow needs woodwork and clothier. A heavy armour greatsword tank needs just blacksmith to make all his gear. So i think it should be a little slower.

Yes, but someone wanting to do damage with that greatsword would be wanting medium armour.

Clothing levels faster because you deconstruct light and medium armor. This means youl be deconstructing more stuff in general than with blacksmithing and getting 2 different types of maths to level it. If you wear medium for example you can just trash craft all light armor.

tip though. Dont deconstruct your own crafts, trade them with someone else whose doing the same thing. Youl get more xp and mats!

A small dmg increase yes but nothing to get excited about lol

It is the difference between good and bad damage. If you intend on doing any damage at all, you should be equipping the appropriate armour; for physical damage it is medium armour (several pieces at least).

Blacksmith AND clothier is much much slower. Woodworking.. does seem a little faster.

I am a level 5 blacksmith, level 4 clothier and level 4 woodworker.

I have been busting my butt with Blacksmith.
Clothier reasonably so busting butt trying to raise it up.
Woodworking, not really trying at all.

Provisioning I am level 20.. I stopped since I am not sure if I want to keep going... I am still on the fence.

For me yes and no, I resently got paired with a guildie for blacksmithing and we both went at it are own to level

But since we paired up ( he researches armor traits and I research weapon traits ) and thanks to destroying each others crafter whites, this will be a lot easier to level.

All I need now is more sp...

They do not need to speed up anything. if anything, some of the other crafts should be slowed down. I like the current pace that requires a lot of time and effort into raising BS..I wish they other crafts were a tad bit slower to keep in line, although they are not too far off I don't think. I don't want just anyone maxxed out. The idea is supposed to be that high level crafters are rare and that's how it should be. Certainly not something where there are 5000 maxxed out smiths in a week.

Blacksmithing does seem to level more slowly than other crafting skills. So far I've been able to grind my smithing up to lvl 8 and that's by blowing through all the mats I've been finding myself as well as those being dumped over to me by a friend that I'm playing with. Been crafting myself a new armor set and weapon every 2 levels, plus researching or deconstructing anything else and grinding out a ton of stuff to deconstruct with all my excess iron. Woodworking on the other hand, I've gotten up to level 11 by crafting myself 3 shields, then deconstructing all the bows, staves and shields I've been picking up, without doing the same kind of construct/deconstruct grind I've had to do in smithing.

I'm not really complaining though, I like the fact that its kind of grindy, I get more of a sense of accomplishment when I get a level. So I'll agree that other skills should be slowed down, Provisioning in particular. There are WAY too many provisioning materials available in all the containers scattered around the world, it's far too easy to grind out levels with the excessive amount of materials you can find. If I found even a quarter of the amount of iron ore in containers as I do food stuff, I'd have probably double the smithing levels I have now.
  • rorywatts96
The thing about provisioning is that the things are more likely to be just laying around in barrels and sacks and things. And you get lots of xp for the food/drink items you make so it goes up even faster than if it was just one of these things.

I now tend to sell the items I make with excess iron as deconstructing them doesn't give you very much xp at all. Then use the money to buy more corundum (I'm a nord) and things.

If anyone wants to meet up to dual level blacksmithing my characters name is Rory Stonebreaker.
