Are Maelstrom/Asylum/Master weapons still viable post Summerset?

With the changes according to Alcast: Two Handed Weapons now count as two set pieces, thus making Staves and Two Handers worth two slots. This is an insane change and will impact balance and the possibilities of set combinations by a lot, especially for magicka setups as they are the most common users of two handed weapons.

It would seem it will make more sense to run a set weapon.

    If one option is better than the other, then yes it make sense to choose that option if you want what is best.

Early parses on the Dev Server were showing that the traditional DW/Bow builds were still outperforming 2H/Bow and Bow/Bow, but both were still significantly improved and actually viable. Gil pulled a parse with his 2H/Bow that was only 3-4K behind the DW/Bow, and Bow/Bow was, somewhat shockingly, similarly close. With more testing, we might actually begin to see some real PvE-viable builds when Update 18 drops. Where this change really shines, though, is for staff users - Magicka builds, consider this your biggest buff. 5/5/2 Combos with full uptime are now possible. This should be exciting."


    Obviously, more testing is needed, but you'll have to wait for the PTS for that.

    Yeah flexibility is cool but why would one try to get a vma or vas weapon nowadays? I hope they keep that little something that makes them worth it

    If the additional 5-piece set you use is a duration based effect, it is entirely possible to proc it on one bar, then lead on over to another bar that utilizes a vMA weapon.

    In this scenario, Summerset will actually buff vMA weapons indirectly.

    More likely case is you proc a 5 piece from your back bar, switch and then proc another 5 set piece on your front bar.

    You can do that now. What the 2-set count does is it makes the 5-piece sets able to proc from any bar you're on. So you gain full benefit of the 5-piece sets at any time.

    VMA bow will still be mandatory for stam dps and VMA staff will still be used but this open up a lot of option for front bar use.

    I don't follow @Avran_Sylt. The 2-set count means you need the weapon equipped to get it to work? Therefore you need to be on that specific bar, not just any bar.

    Oh. This is in regards to the 5/5/2 setup.

    Monster sets take up 2 slots (head/shoulder)

    This leaves 5 body, 3 jewelry, and weapons open for other sets. (10 total slots left)

    DW can run Jewelry + Weapons in order to keep that 5-piece while at the same time having their armor 5-piece bonus. But this is because the two weapons count individually towards the set bonus.

    Right now, 2-handed weapons cannot do that and at most with a monster set can have 5/4/2 on a bar at any given time.

    vMA bow is not replaceable for stam builds. It contributes to a ridiculous amount of damage just by itself. PVE is more dots oriented and dual wield will still be BiS.
    Magika will see significant changes.

    asylum staff is probably dead.

    vMA bow is stupidly strong, so is vMA staff, so in PvE at least everyone will still want those for the back bar, just like they do for DW / bow builds.

    Since the asylum/vma two handers and staves only have a single set bonus but are occupying 2 slots i feel that they will need a buff or return the weapon damage bonus in order for them to be competative with a 4/5 piece bonus from another set.

    I feel the return of that weapon damage bonus will make them comparable.

    But i feel there wont be the drive to grind for them anymore which to be honest i welcome. Even after getting 15 characters thier weapons of choice :/

    ZOS won't let those weapons be useless. People spent too much time and effort farming them and would be furious. They'll buff them if it looks like set weapons will end up being stronger. I'm sure they've already thought of this, and have probably already tested it.

    I’m pretty certain that they are rather useless in PvE as welll, being as the vast majority of stamina builds rely on DW setups. I’m curious now as to what plans ole’ Wrobel has for VAS and VMA 2-handed weapons. Especially Maelstrom Weapons, as ZOS already nerfed them twice. The first time being in that they no longer supply a weapon damage increase for using them. The second time being how they nerfed gap-closing damage. Lol.
