Not same price in Europe ? What kind of rip off is this ???

Sumerset upgrade costs $29.99 in USA but its 29.99 EUR in Europe. Do people at Zenimax know that 1 USD does not equal 1 EUR ?
What is even more strange in this situation is that keys are not region locked. so of course I am going to buy USA key and apply it to my Euro account. So whats the deal ? This is some kind of idiot tax for people who don't know better ?

When I went to Europe I noticed how alot of things from franchises were the same price in Euros as it was in Canadian dollars.
Im pretty sure you are getting ripped off by all kinds of corporations, you just dont realize it.

Guess he meant EU has higher VAT in general than US and UK the highest of all. But it is not the case.

Even if that were the case though would the discrepancy in price be that big? I don't see it.

EU prices are always displayed with VAT included. US prices are usually displayed without sales tax, which differs between states. That's why sometimes US prices seem lower at first glance despite actually being comparable.

Not saying that's what happened here, of course. There are many reasons for regional differences in video game prices.

    From what I see though,

the US $29.99 is the same as the UK £19.99
the US $39.99 is the same as the UK £29.99

    $39.99 = £28.43

That's a difference of £1.56 that I can definitely live with.

Yah I can't find a 29.99 copy either. Only 39.99US for the standard edition. ~54 Canadian, 30 pounds. Had to use my VPN to stop it from defaulting to the CAN price every time, lol.

VAT is 20% and must be shown in the initial price. In the US we pay sales tax per state so it's not shown in the initial price.

    It's called VAT and it's 20%.

I understand about the state sales tax but i guess since we don't see it i was confused about the amount/calculation. Thanks for the info.

If I buy the digital upgrade for $29.99 my final price is $32.39 (8% tax) as sales tax doesn't show up until I "check out".
Now if my state had a 20% tax like VAT then my $29.99 price would be $35.98 at checkout.

I could be wrong, but a lot of price differences are due to VAT, at least in most places. But yeah, it's weird when it's not region locked, so you are just getting shafted. Ironically if I were to buy the expansion in my own currency, it would be like 30% more due to the ridiculous taxes my country puts on stuff, so I actually save money buying it with euroes, though I guess i'd save even more if I bought it with dollars. But yeah, it would be nice to know why they do it like that.

A whole business has formed because of this inequality and it is quite the dilemma for the game companies.
ZOS has a choice here. Either the upgrade costs the same amount no matter the currency, which hurts their sales in lower income countries as fewer people will be willing to pay the effectively higher price or they adjust the price for every currency/country to have it be the same price relative to the average income in which case they can expect roughly the same relative amount of sales everywhere, but risk players in rich countries buying the game cheaper in other countries. Neither options are ideal.

This is precisely it. Digital products are not charge any sales tax in the US save for a few states. Depends on where you buy it (i.e. Amazon, Microsoft etc.). That could represent as much as a 20% price difference with VAT being applied. Also, currency conversion charges, though I don't know if Zenimax pays for that and passes it on or what not.

Awesome...but the GBP version is 19.99 GBP which is what it shows me when I use my VPN and connect to a UK server.

So as I thought, this is all about nothing. In fact the UK cost is less that the US one even if you take into account conversion, so the OP has got it wrong.

That's even less fair to the rest of the countries in Europe outside UK, because like I said its 30 EUR everywhere except UK, 20 GBP is only 23 EUR, which means rest of Europe is paying 7 euro's more !!!

How does this fit with VAT theory ??? I thought UK also pays VAT...
