Leveling a Vampire

Question - started leveling up a vampire and i heard it based only on exp i earn and NOT from skills on the bar? Honestly i dont want any of the skills except the ultimate on my bars - do i level up my vampire just as quick without any skills on the bar?

...still need to slot the skills to advance them to morph and max tho!1
