Here's the chart for how much AP you need to unlock ranks and Alliance War Skills: http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Alliance_Points

The total amount is cumulative, however, your Alliance War skills will show you the amount you need to get to the next level just like any other skill bar. The amount was also significantly reduced from where it used to be.

You can see your AP gain by:
Checking your Alliance War Skill bar
Checking your Alliance War Rank bar
Checking your Leaderboard Score for your home campaign

Do note that there is often a delay in showing AP gained on the leaderboards and perhaps the others as well.

Get a healing staff and find a hord and just spam heals. That seems to work the best for me as I am not competitive PvP player.

If you are a magicka-based character, healing groups of players works great.
If you are a stamina-based character, healing with a resto staff did not work for me. What worked for me was finding a group of players to run with, equipping a bow and hitting as many enemy players from range as possible.

Because i hate pvp i don't wanna pvp but everything short of stam sorc falls flat on self heals and aoe dots as far as stam goes so i need fastest way possible i pvped all day on my stam blade took like 20 keeps got the ticks and didnt even come close to clearing even vigor much less caltrops

    You can do both.

If there's a PUG group picking up from zone for a group you're following that you want to ask for an invite, go for it! But you can also do what I did and just follow the zergs. I had a slow mount on my stamina character, so I also camped out a lot of keeps and outposts that needed defending.

I'll be honest, when I'm pushing for AP on a new character for skills, I usually figure on it taking several sessions of dedicated AP farming. I'll usually go out for a couple hours at a time and count on it taking me several days. On my main healer with a fast mount in a crowded campaign, I usually can get 75-100k over 3-4 hours of playing. But I found it much harder on my stamina characters because it is a much riskier playstyle than a healer who wants to be in the back of the group anyway. Remember to try to tag as many enemies as you can while zerg surfing for a little extra AP.

This is an older thread, but its worth updating for the new Battlegrounds AP.

Losing a Battlegrounds match gives 7K AP, winning gives 12K AP, so if someone is not comfortable in Cyrodiil with following the zerg or riding from keep to keep, I'd recommend giving Battlegrounds a shot. It seems like a really efficient way to earn AP for your Alliance War skills as long as you can stand the combat.

If you really hate to PVP and hate fighting, I'd still recommend Cyrodiil because of the options to gain AP by repairing walls, healing, safety in numbers, healing AP, and just being present while attacking or defending keeps.
