What are some of the go to light sets that work well to get you trials ready? Every build I’m seeing either uses moondancer/architect or like willpower and trash. I have a crafted set of juliannos and mother’s sorrow gear to fill it out, but I think I can do better. It’s for a magblade that will likely be dw once I get Zaan. Thanks!

Julianos and Willpower are nearly as effective as Julianos Moondancer/Infal. You can effectively complete all content in Juli and Willpower.

You most likely don't want to hear this, but you can farm nhof quite easily and get master architect. Especially on a nightblade it's quite a good choice to have as a 5 piece set alongside mechanical acuity.
But, if you don't want to go in there with complete random jewelry, willpower is a good choice.

I don’t mind farming, so much as it’s a nightmare getting into competent groups pugging. Sounds like that’s the thing to do though - thanks!

    there's necropotence if you're a sorc
spc / war maiden if you're a templar
burning spellweave if you're a dk

if you feel unready for normal trial, the problem is probably not the gear, the problem is most probably you.

The combination of Julianos & Mother's sorrow also will get you more as ready for trials, even veteran. Along with something like a Molag Kena's shoulder (5/5/1) this won't put you much behind BIS options, less then <5%.

If the DPS is still low, then the problems lies somewhere else. This can be rotation, light-weaving, attributes, or skills.

You can also use Burning Spellweave from City of Ash. If you run dual fire staff the up-time is usually around 60% (stationary fights) which gives roughly 525*0.60=315 spell dmg. The benefit is that you can cast your ult when BSW procs so it does a lot more dmg. Light attacks also scale best with spell dmg so its pretty good on light attack builds like magicka NBs.

Pre-trial I would run something like 5x Julianos, 5x BSW and 1x Molag Kena.
If you have the vMA fire staff on the back bar I would run BSW on the front bar.

DW front bar can be strong on dummy parses but its hard to sustain and tricky to pull off in many fights.
Maybe DW+Zaan can work with Master Architect because you have to come in melee range to use Soul Harvest.
Still I think its hard to proc Zaan with DW light attacks because the target can easily move out of range.
