Harvesting and the Art of Courtesy

Nobody can beat me to the node when I'm on a speedy Orc (max speed available in game - a build designed for harvesting nodes) ;). First come first served. I don't have super fast internet connection and due to this I usually fail in pvp. Someone has better ping and give a heck about me and being polite - they just kill me and move along to next newbie. Why should I act differently when harvesting nodes? Sorry, my fat Orc is just faster here and I just beat your character in the fight for nodes, when I can't beat you in pvp :). It's not being rude it's just an issue of justice :p .

In starter zones, sometimes I'll politely mention it in chat (especially with chests) because new players who've not played an MMO before might not know the polite behavior. I didn't when I started.

However, the jerks who do it on purpose and laugh at you really tick me off. Was in Craglorn one day with my healer (since she had the half harvesting passive and the rest didn't). Sidenote: When I farm Craglorn, I generally just go for a survey map, grab it, then do a loop up and around until I get back to Belkarth. Anyway, it's usually seemed that most people in Craglorn just ignore the stuff mobs sit on in favor of moving to the next, unobstructed node. So I decided, "eh, I'll go for it and get the stuff no one else wants".

Some player, who'd been rushing ahead of me for awhile turned around to come back and steal the node from me. I made a comment in zone chat about Craglorn being frustrating to farm because people are jerks. At which point that player made sure to come back to whisper to me 'lol' and told me I needed to do higher DPS and deserved to have my node stolen. And continued to whisper me telling me stuff like that and that they'd gotten 2 potent from the node they stole, etc.

Moral of the story: some people are absolute jerks and like to troll others to get a rise out of them. You can't teach manners to people who have no courtesy or respect for their peers so it's best to just refuse to take the bait.

-Yet OP did not name and shame.
-Courtesy is a social construct, you are your own authority. What matters is how many people agree with you.
-This thread is proof that the feeling does not always fade in a few seconds.
-Yes, you can say competition is great after lecturing people who are more competitive than you are, if they are more competitive in the sense that they circumvent or ignore constructed rules and regulations for their own benefit. As they are not 'in the same competition'. (make no mistake that this is highly subjective).

I pretty much agree except for the part about people waiting for you to fail to lockpick a chest. That issue was brought up multiple times in beta and the reply was "that is why there is a delay before you can try again, to give someone else the chance to succeed where you failed. Don't fail"

Someone else snaffling the chest is the conseqence of failure.

I've been playing and harvesting in mmo's since 1999, and yes this makes me a dinosaur. Having established my credentials, I'd like to share a few frustrations with regards to harvesting. ESO has done an excellent job of node regeneration imho and so...the following actions seem rather silly if not down right rude. Yes, I know you can't fix stupid but I am hoping that this will, at least, clue some players to when they exhibit certain actions it causes them to look rude and stupid.

When another player is clearly headed for a node don't sprint to beat them. Instead, move on to the next node.
When another player is standing in front of a node, fighting to clear their path, don't walk through and take the node. Instead, move on to the next node
When another player has their tool raised in the act of harvesting...do not steal from beneath them. Move on to the next node.
While harvesting, being invis.d does not help increase the players chances of beating another to a chest, node or trove. Instead it only makes them appear stupid.
When a player comes across someone attempting to open a treasure chest ...please do not stand over them with the hopes of their failing. Would you actually consider rushing in to take over the treasure chest and if so..would you like someone doing that to you in return? Karma is a powerful thing and others make note of your name...reputation can be important and good will in the player community should mean something.

All seasoned players know that the regeneration rate for nodes in this game provide enough for everyone if given a bit of patience. There is always another node down the road.

In closing, a game can only bring so much atmosphere to the experience the rest is up to the player community. I've experienced both good and bad player based communities in mmo's and trust me...most do not stay long when others show a less than friendly, respectful interaction. Everyone wins when the player community is respectful, helpful and easy going. Competition is great. Keep it friendly.

    Sidra - 720 Night Blade
    Illya - 720 Sorc
    Hvit - 720 Templar

Maybe they’re sprinting for the nodes because you’re interrupting their farming, not the other way around.

If someone refuses to not take your nodes as you clear out enemies around it, say something, then report if needed (for harassment), reblog and hope for a new channel..

This sounds like baiting, which I despise. You tell others what they shouldn't do, then wait for them to react improperly on your baiting, and then you report them (I hope I am wrong but it sounded this way).

This is not a very kind behaviour too, you know. If some people doesn't comply with your point of view, it doesn't mean you should provoke them in turn. Just leave them be.

If you are harvesting prime spots, then you should anticipate that your competitors won't willingly concede resource nodes to you. Choose places with less competition.

In my opinion, trying (directly in game) to make others to comply with your wishes is as bad as acting inconsiderable during nodes collecting (e.g. stealing)

You say "hey, I was clearing out mobs for that node." If they come back with the normal jerk response, ignore and keep going, if it continues, report them. If they respond with sorry, write it off as a small mistake and forget about it. I'm not saying act like a child and report if they don't do what you say, only if they continue to follow you around and take what you are going for. I thought don't act like an entitled baby was implied, but I guess that's the state of the forums.

The biggest difference between the atmosphere in the early MMOs and the current ones is just that one thing, courtesy. Common courtesy was once...umm.. common but it's a rarity these days.

Sprinting to the same node is fine. Taking a node from someone clearing the mobs around a node is not. Players who do the latter should be permanently banned.

One of the worst cases in MMO, and direct way of stealing from someone. I never picked someone's chest that way and I'd be very angry for someone doing it to me.
The moment someone is near a chest and started lock picking, it's their chest.
It's not theirs the moment they leave a chest not totally cleaned.

The only things in this game you "own" are in your inventory/storage. Players cannot steal anything from you.

That being said, I let people have whatever nodes or chest they are near when farming. I also let the ninjas have whatever nodes I'm working towards because I can do nothing to stop them anyway. It's a waste of time to choose some form of revenge/competition vs. a node ninja - that interrupts your own farming efficiency.

The best way to deal with node discourtesy is to avoid it by farming a different area.
