Why do new characters have to start off in Morrowind?

I liked it better when we floated ashore on our factions land.

TESO needs a wardrobe system badly. Something similar to WoW's tmog system would make this game one of the best mmorpg out there!

Maybe because they figured they would be attracting a lot of new players who just wanted to return to Morrowind, so why not let them go straight there for the sake of nostalgia. I would love to see them return to the old game start with the next chapter.

Not having access to mundus stones stucks... but getting to a large city straight away and seeing the beautiful land of Morrowind is good.

edit: also its really hard to get rings without dolemns. You have to get a long way into the story to get the ashlander rings.

I agree. The new starting location causes the npc dialog to be incorrect when speaking to them at the original locations.

I started a new Ebonhart pact character recently, and was told I was found on the shore of Bleakrock, yet I used the wayshrine to travel there.

I have also been told I have no soul, and called the soulless one, even though I have yet to be taken to Coldharbor.

It would be nice to have a choice about it, Morrowind or the faction starter isles. Seems to me that would be more in the spirit of the whole One Tamriel thing.

Vvardenfell is amazing for experienced players. A new player that gets thrown into the game and starts on Vvardenfell will have a hard time. It is significantly harder than all the other zones and comes with some very annoying quests (yes, talking bout you, sneak and stealth quests). It doesn't work as a starting zone. No Dolmens there, no dungeons, nothing. Players still should start in the Prison (or skip if already done) and then directly land on the starting island of your faction.

Yeah, being able to be choose would be best. Set the default to whatever you want new players to see even though I still think it should be Coldharbour, but at least let us choose when creating a character. Maybe put it where you choose character templates for on the PTS.

Interesting. I have not purchased Morrowwind yet and am still on my first character. Wonder where I will start?

I hope with Summerset Chapter we won't be forced to start new characters there... I want to have a choice, ZOS.

You will leave the Wailing Prison and most likely land either in the first major city of your faction or start directly on a beginner's island.

Makes as about as much sense as the Rivenspire questline if you are a vampire.
So they raised the floor and lowered the ceiling. Except the ceiling has spikes in it now and the floor is also lava.

I hope so.I have been taking my time with my first character and am looking forward to exploring as each of the other two factions.

    Well don't worry.

It is possible that you land in Daggerfall, Vulkhelwatch or Davon's Watch first. If so you can still travel to the beginner's islands (Khenartis Roost, Bleakrock Isle, Stros Mkai) and start your adventures there. That's what I would recommend. And then just follow your faction questline until you finished the last faction zone and go to Coldharbour. And after that it's up to you. But doing the zones as ZOS originally designed them is better lore-wise.

I've never played any of the single player Elder Scroll games so there is no nostalgia for me.

I guess new players are just clueless... because when I start a new character out, I immediately go to the Vvardenfell wayshrine and head for my alliance mainland to start the main quest. Because technically, you have to do the 'benefactor' quest to end up in the Wailing Prison in order to exit onto your alliance island which is the proper sequence. There is nothing forcing you to stay on Vvardenfell after you exit the tutorial, your main alliance starter zone, eg. Auridon for AD, is available via wayshrine right off the boat. Once you teleport to your main starter zone, you'll get offered the 'benefactor' quest.

If you own Morrowwind you start there, but you can take the first wayshrine to your alliances starter city wayshrine (which will be covered up on the map by a housing icon - thanks ZOS). From there you can get a quest from a hooded figure to meet their benefactor. This will start the old main story line.

    Why?

I think the answer is pretty simple. People paid for Morrowind, so ZOS puts them into Vvardenfell so they don't have to go hunting for it. It is the same reason why there are annoying DLC quest starters everywhere. They want to make sure that when the content is purchased, that it can be immediately accessed.

In the case of Morrowind, they (incorrectly) decided to change the start of the game and make a new tutorial.

Personally, I have no problem with the new tutorial, but I still think that new players to the game should be in Wailing Prison. That is the better tutorial for teaching the game.

I would have made new players start in Wailing Prison, and then allowed a choice of tutorials, or no tutorial, for subsequent characters.

I am certain that they will repeat the Morrowind tutorial mistake with every Chapter.

I don't mind my new character's starting there, but for brand new players it seems like it would easier to start in the locations of their respective alliances, and go from there.

I hope with Summerset ZoS will offer a choice.

...because the designers have been stu... ehhh... a bit silly.

They were so happy about their new tutorial, they wanted to share it with everyone. (a decision i feel must have come during the latter half of the post development party when they were all pretty much... chemically influenced becond the boundaries of common sense)
Even though it makes a great deal more sense to start off with the "vestige" tutorial instead...

But! You do not -have- to!
You can start off with that tutorial, then take the wayshrine to your factions starter city (Davons Watch - Daggerfall - Vukhel Guard) right away, talk with your "Mysterious Benefactor" and get things rolling the old way.

It is much, much better that way! Not only are the old way starter isles a much more forgiving place for new characters, the whole story also makes a lot more sense that way!

I also agree that the original starter islands were better, but guess its because once new players buy the Morrowind edition they want to be in Morrowind, and i guess ZOS are proud of it as well
It would be cool if you had a choice when starting a new game.

You don't have to level there. As soon as you get off the boat turn right and talk to the NPC to take you to the old starter islands.

And you can. With a little detour.

But I agree, it would have been -way- better if every character started with the old coldharbour tutorial and then the starter isles (without some first having to pop over to starter town and talk with the mysterious benefactor to kick off that start...)

And then, make the new "tutorial" a full blown introductionary quest for those going to Vvardenfell... for -everyone- going to Vvardenfell...
