Speaking of the removal of crown crates...

Just wanted to put this out here becuase I've been wanting to make a topic about it for a long time now. Posted in another topic, I decided to copy this here since stuff gets buried so easily in here. I want to know some opinions of other people and ZOS to see this (yeah ask me why I haven't given up yet lol)

SW Battlefront 2 just completely removed their loot crates and turned their shop into what ESO used to have. And look how many people happily approve of that.

Have direct seasonal access to all cosmetics for a set price of Crowns in the shop. Buy it or not, up to you, no gambling, no disappointment. Get what you pay for, high prices or not. It's a better, much much healthier system. And yes it's healthier for both the company and the playerbase, BECAUSE IT DOESNT MAKE THE GAME LOOK LIKE CRAP AND THE COMPANY LOOK LIKE BUNCH OF GREEDY A's (especially when the customer service isn't always exactly top)... all this in turn does what? MAKE PEOPLE HAPPIER ON ALL FRONTS.

ZOS need to realise that this in turn is way better because even the poorer players would spend money on something that's guaranteed. With loot crates bull mostly only the rich will pay a lot or gambling addicts - not that many of them in both camps. It also turns a lot of players away from spending in the future if RNG treats them like crap.

Speaking of the amount of people willing to spend real money for cosmetics... Does NOONE AT ZOS REALISE THAT THE LOWER YOU PUT THE PRICES - THE MORE PEOPLE WILL BUY? And I'm talking huge numbers here. Most of the stuff in the store is NOT WORTH IT. Yes people still buy them, but it's just bad altogether. Whoever runs this department should be fired on the spot. Because that person is actually holding money back from you, ZOS, believe it or not. Experiment and find balance. Do some sale waves and evaluate profits from each. You CAN make this better.

So...

ZOS, REMOVE CROWN CRATES PLEASE. (And reduce prices - you'll see profits skyrocketing and players will be happier)
PLAYERS, DO NOT BUY THEM PLEASE. (Do not support this atrocity and your gambling addiction)

Now while I'd still rather see devs make and design these badass things they put into loot creates, like mounts and collectibles, and put them into the game as hard to get achievement rewards.. Hey, gotta make money too

but crown crates is NOT the right answer.

PS: Yes I have bought some before, but only with free crowns i get from the sub because due to all the cool stuff being in the crates, i have nothing else to spend them on anyway. And also before someone tries to hint on how the game may become P2W, read this entire post again and think real hard about it. Thanks!

Have you seen how many crates single people get in order to get a radiant apex mount unobtainable with gems? it is working as intended even if its scummy

You do realize there is only a small number of those people in comparison to those who never buy any except with their sub crowns right? Like a really really small number. Those people just like to be seen, giving you the idea of it being common, as any rich person does.

I don't buy the ''lower prices = more people buying = more money'' argument. Don't you think if that was the case, ZOS would have followed this rule? I mean what's the point in them putting the prices high on things if it annoys the community AND makes them less money?

I'm not so sure that's the case. Many of my friends in game who don't even have forums accounts have bought a lot of crates pretty much every season. And they're not even the whales...

Just look how often people complain about these things... Hell I've seen people complain about this since launch. Even the smallest things like consumables off the crown store, who even wants to spend 5 bucks for something worth 5 minutes of farming gold ingame?

There wasn't much choice with Battlefront 2 since the fall-out from the loot box controversy was hurting sales so much. ESO, and most other games, seem to be largely getting away with it so there's not the same pressure to fix them.

Of course the solution there is simple - if people stopped buying crates ZOS would put the crate items into the shop/directly into the game or risk losing out completely on the money we're willing to spend to get them.

But that's never going to happen.

Well if they weren't profitable for ZOS then they wouldn't be on there. My friend who joined the game and played for like 2 weeks bought the daedric motif off the crown store for like 2k crowns or whatever, yet it sells in game for less than 500 gold.

It may not be fair, but it works

Also I don't consider myself a gambling addict from spending money on crown crates. I buy a set amount with my spare money, and don't buy any more after I open them. So if you'd reconsider your generalisation about that, that would be great

Because only people who complain go to the forum and make threads about it. In the mean time, every time a new season of crown crates goes online all my five guilds are full of joys - people rush in to buy crates. ZOS sees that.

Even if you price them at dirt cheap level, people who dont buy them will still not spend a dime, while the whales are pissed because they will lose the unique status. ZOS sees that.

Sorry I'm really not here to farm reactions on the internet from strangers I'll never meet that don't directly contribute to my personal life or happiness. I'm trying to share my opinion as I've wanted for months but never got around to it.

I said mostly. Didn't mean to generalise the entire community

I know a bunch of people who spend their pocket money too. But you can't deny it'd be great if you could get a badass mount that you chose with that money every week now can you?

What I don't understand though is how we as a community stand against each other in so many things that we as a community could make much better. Strength in numbers they say... One would think people can control themselves. Or is the human race really so easily gullible. Perhaps I'm still just a young naive man.

Battlefront 2 & Elder Scrolls Online is 2 different games.
Eso, is a MMO.
Battlefield 2. Is not.
They need the money to keep the servers running, to pay their workers, improve the game.
Sure crown crates is like gambling.. just if you don't want to go for any. Then don't. Many people do enjoy crown crates

Yeah I see that part now. I was referring to the "PLAYERS, DO NOT BUY THEM PLEASE. (Do not support this atrocity and your gambling addiction)"

But yeah I agree with you for sure that crown crates should be removed. I just don't see it happening any time soon because of how profitable it is for ZOS. Unless some laws get changed but I'm sure they'd find a sneaky way around it anyway

AFAIK ZOS published no data on how much money ESO makes or where it comes from, so these are just ideas some players have, based on nothing.

Sure humans are gullible. See, even players who freak out ostensibly over crates in fact freak out over idea they will not get their mount. All ZOS needs to do is throw away some mounts, they cost it nothing after all, and some of these players will shut up and turn on the rest.

You can do a simple math to get close to it. (if you compare it to other games)

Eso has 8.5 Million Players (2017).
Lets say 1% players buy more than 100 boxes and 10% buy 15 max.

Best crown store pack costs 125 euro (21000). 8.5 milion of 1%= 85.000 players
Normal people usualy buy 5500 one (35 euro) 8.5 milion of 10% = 850.000 players

15 crates (best) = 5000 crowns Or 333 crowns per box

1% players = 85.000x 100 boxes = x 333 = 2.830.500.000crowns
21000: 125 = 168 crown = 1 euro
2.830.500.000: 168 = 16.848.215* Euro in total from whales

16 milion euros. (or almost 20 milion dolars) And i cant be bothered with 10% one, but you get the idea

Crown crates on Eso are nothing compared to DCUO booster bundles. You were guaranteed an aura with every one, which could be sold for gold or traded. It was pay to win.

But that's never going to happen.

The Battlefront controversy has drawn lawmakers attention to them. They are looking into regulations or banning them in some countries. It might effect Eso for players in certain states, or countries so pretty much Battlefront was a hornets nest. They might not do anything to really hurt Eso's crate system but they might not be able to sell the game to people under twenty one in certain states. We will see what happens. It depends on what they deside to do and how far they will go.

Battlefront 2's loot box issue was VERY different from what ESO has. Battlefront 2 had player progression tied directly to microtransactions, making the game pay to win in every definition of the term. It was like if you were playing ESO and instead of leveling up from killing mobs and doing quests and getting armor from drops, you got it all from loot boxes that you could pay for instead. While ESO's loot box strategy is a scummy move where the vast majority of items you get from them are garbage consumables, there's nothing in the loot boxes that you NEED to play the game.

Those crowns weren't free. You paid for them with your sub.

While I would love to see the crates gone, you can't say how their revenue would compare. They were already selling mounts directly before the crates. If they sold more that way, they would ditch the crates and return to direct selling. Reputation and player retention would be better arguments. Clearly EA had been taking a beating recently and it made sense to adjust.

Pretty much this. Battlefront 2 pushed it too far. (Imagine you had to PvP to Alliance Rank 10 to earn 16 gems so you could get the basic Imperial horse, or try your luck with buying crown crates in hopes of getting a mount.) They had to revert to direct sales to make any money.

Crown crates may not be something I agree with. But I will give ESO partial credit, their model isn't that bad. Now if they would just publish odds, make all items gettable with gems, and put everything in the crates up for direct sale at least once, we can maybe move that C- to a solid B at least.

The same could be said for any crown store items. In fact, we can say whatever we want because can't see the game's finances. ZOS can.
