The Real Threat to Imperial City

and, it ain't the daedra...

I can't remember the last "rant" thread i posted...not sure but, i may never have...

however, a comment i read today - totally triggered me:
Rittings wrote: »
I've played pvp and pve for 3 years now - and have to say, I'm getting very bored with both. Even new dungeons don't feel new - and PVE gets a lot of new content... so imagine how bored a lot of people are getting with PVP!! Nothing in Cyrodiil has changed since the Imperial City (and the changes there already killed it nearly completely).

back in early 2016 pretty much every day of pvping included time spent in cyrodiil - but, also time spent in the Imperial City...specifically the arena district where players from each alliance would congregate to duel and fight constantly...

since that the time there have been a few changes to Imperial City: weakening the npcs, changing the platforms so that the Assault skill Reach passive no longer works, changing the rules on tel var loss upon character death - and - the introduction of district flags, along with the game rule not allowing you to rez in a district where you did not control the flag...

my understanding was that at the time zos wanted to spread us out to the other districts (each platform/server had their own area in IC where everyone would congregate in)...

what that rule changes did though - was empty out a good bit of the population from the Imperial City...not to say IC is dead all the time - but, the 20 to 30 or more players that used to congregate in a single district there to fight nearly around the clock - no longer go there for that...

my hope was that battlegrounds would replace that same excitement and gameplay that the arena district did, wherein there would be wild non stop AvAvA melees day and night - however, battlegrounds is mostly some frenetic timed event of running around in circles battling non-descriptive orange, purple and green teams...for myself at least - not so much fun...

and, it ain't no where near what the old arena district was...not even close...some of the best nemeses i've had in this game i found there...

it puzzles me because you would think zos would be able to view the player participation data for before and after those district flag changes...

just wanted to get that out - and, for the off chance that someone from zos stops by this thread...

get those freaking flags out of the Imperial City districts and open up all those district platforms for rezzing to at any time

you don't need to come up with new games and re-skinned environments - open up the IC environment and we the players will make it happen...

also, apparently expecting a paid for DLC to have its own unique access point is obviously to much to expect...

Well first off a lot of people were feeling some kinda way when IC was on PTS and then ZOS changed how it would work cause ppl made a valid point, they were charging ppl for something they wouldn’t be able to access due to how they set things up.

    The solution however was this......
-DONT CHARGE for it as it’s not DLC it was just the part they decided to delay to work on who knows what.

-There should’ve been a completely different way Cyrodil was done prior to IC knowing their plans

Now yeah, some agree with you.
For me personally I never understood why they were trying to make DAoC come back in a TES skin. (Problem #1)

Cyrodil never worked as intended from closed beta to release (Problem #2)

And they were supposed to be fixing the issues n Cyrodil prior to rolling out new content in Cyrodil (Problem #3)

(in my personal opinion only)It still seems absolutely obvious that Cyrodil and Imperial City should be normal PvE zones separated by PvE faction due to being at war.

Other than that the Battle Grounds concepts should’ve redone the PvP of Cyrodil and that would’ve actually resulted in a completely different xoerience but worthy of calling it paid DLC.

Instead they created battle grounds for PvP only and i was like WTH!!!!! So basically you’re telling people just don’t go to Cyrodil for PvP if the experiences are bad cause we can’t fix them.

Well....you could’ve made the BGs parts of Cyrodil in small , medium large and very large BG modes within Cyrodil and IC as well as other zones ppl asked for all along

only you - ZOS can save poor Volghass and his buddy Baron Von Thirsk and others from complete boredom and possible unemployment...

remove the flags from the Imperial City Districts, and, allow us to rez on any district platform we choose

Y'know that would be a ganker griefer's wet dream?

All a sadistic person would need to do is target a poor PvE soul, and then camp them just outside the Rez area. Every single time the victim would want to keep trying to do their Questing they'd get ganked by the PvP tryhard, until one eventual ultimate outcome. The victim would give up and be forced back to the Sewer base, being denied their PvE run.

I just want IC back the way it was (pre dark brotherhood patch)...

i'm not sure how much you enjoy pvping - but, it was glorious...day and night anywhere from 15 to 40 players would congregate in the arena district (this was on ps4/na, other platform/servers would get together in different districts) and fight...

it was glorious, mindless carnage...you could easily complete all five (at the time) bounties in an hour or so...

no structure, no rules, just battling any one not wearing your factions banner...

also, plenty of friendly/not do friendly duels taking place over by the entrance to the arena itself...

after death you'd simply re-spawn right back up on the same platform you had jumped down from shortly before...

you could actually earn a good bit of AP at times...

the whole point was fighting for the sake of fighting...

it made for an excellent character training ground...

am I crazy (easy answer actually :#), or, was it the implementation of those relatively useless (way to make some extra stones and a little AP) flags in the districts which killed the buzz...

I don't know - maybe the real issue was in not allowing us to re-spawn on the platforms easily...

I really think if we had the ability to easily rez (all the time) in the same districts we want to fight in - those district faction fights would become a thing again...

I remember those days. I also remember one faction camping the other's spawn tower. I remember IMMEDIATELY getting swarmed after jumping down. I remember trying to get back into the sewers but a group decided to hold duels right next to the entrance grate and no matter how much blocking you did one of them standing there would see you coming and just immediately jump on you.

no doubt, it could get brutal...i've never been triggered more in pvp than when I played back then in IC...

I also learned more about fighting 1v1 and in zerg battles than at any other time...you had to learn to block, roll dodge, shield, and heal just to survive...

no objectives really, no scoring - just some raw pixel fighting...

just talking/writing about it is really difficult to convey the extreme allure of it...

the proof was there though in all the players participating in it day and night...

I guess the key was the proximity of the platforms (at least for EP and DC in regards to the arena district), and, the fact that it was so easy and quick to rez and get right back at it...

some of the most fun I have in cyrodiil is when i'm not worried about collecting AP...

one of the things I enjoyed the most about it was that it was entirely a player construct taking advantage of an existing environment...

no patch notes or eso announcements telling everyone to meet up in the arena district (or memorial for some platform/servers)...

just word of mouth or accidental discovery brought us all together...

take away the easy re-spawn right back in to the fray - and, you get a major nerf to that particular piece of pvp fun...

Honestly, getting overwhelmed was my favorite part about the IC because it meant that others in my faction would come and fight within 15 minutes. It was actually fun and was reminiscent of the old battles Cyrodiil used to have that wasn't just zerg vs zerg. Ended up with a few friends on every alliance through that. Ever since they put in Districts? It's been god awful. If I was a new player looking to buy DLC? I'd most likely skip the IC because it doesn't even look fun anymore.
