Why look characters in the character selection screen so bad?

Title says it all. Don't know what's wrong in the character selection screen but the faces of my characters look so bad (and totally different) - in game they look like I created them though. Anybody else recognized this?

It's mostly just a light source issue. It seems to be coming from above, which casts dark shadows across their face.

It used to bug me to no end. I just learned to ignore it, since they looked completely fine in game.

I would imagine it is because I spend most my time on the character selection screen spinning them around.
