As a dunmer slave

Either through the fact they have some level of magick ability or maybe just from being good merchants.

Traveling merchants... Priests or missionaries... Mage guild associates studying abroad... Political refugees... Etc

Many reasons they could be there and many reactions based on those...

Bretton travelling merchant/scholar/General traveller looking at sights, making friends and getting caught up in helping people out.

The story you are given is also pretty plausible. You fell out of the sky and helping people because you feel in debt or need to prepare the area for dealing with the daedric onslaught.

Mages' guild seems to be a natural pathway. Into any alliance or zone, really. Came to study, went on an expedition, made local connections, and voila.

Nord settlements are also pretty "open" in terms of traders coming and going and whatnot. And Bretons already do not mind the cold climes very much having had their tumble with the Orcs. Though this probably wouldn't apply quite as much to the Dunmer or Argonian areas (the former too snooty and clan-oriented, the latter too middle-of-the-swamp-y).

And mercenaries, adventurers, those sorts. I mean, look at the Undaunted enclave in each alliance capital (the NPCs, I mean).

Pretty much this. There's a lot of generic reasons you could use. Even just being a general mercenary.

This mostly works in skyrim, as they have a larger population of humans and are more likely to accept other humans into their society. Dunmer are pretty xenophobic and blackmarsh is really only ideal for argonians to live there.

If it were me I'd say my Breton was from markarth as its kinda an area for Bretons in skyrim or riften as its actually in ESO and its a bit of a trading hub.

A Breton would make a nice ornament on Ebonheart walls.

Just because it's a fantasy game, it doesn't mean it's reasonable to assume that anything goes.


Anyway, I always figured that it matters more in which place someone grew up in/lived rather than which race he or she is. So the breton family could be Skyrim, Morrowind, or Black Marsh "natives."

My Breton started as a lowly peasant, went to be a noble knight and ended up being a barbarian werewolf, embracing his Reachman side. Today he lives as a Nord, in a Nord Mead Hall, in Nord Lands. Mead, horns, clothing, etc are all of Nord culture. He decided to choose that culture because he loved it, not because he was born into it.

We can translate Race in ESO to Ethinicities and/or Cultures/Nationalities in the real world. As you know we all share traits more to ones than with others. The rule is each place has their typical combo of eyes/hair/skin colors, facial traits and body aspects like density and height. Yes, you can have a tall east asians and a blue eyed africans but they are exceptions. Nationalities are easy to define, you are born into the land of a country and you are subjected to its laws by default. Cultures are very complex subjects, it can be a mix of religion/tradition/history and other aspects.

Now, the crux of the matter is EP, AD and DC are political/military alliances made by nations. And they are at war with each other. Now, if you represent a nation that is at war with the other, of course you will feel rightfully so suspicious of people who represent or seem to represent the enemy nation. They could be spies, terrorists and enemy combatants. Since we don't live in grand strategy games, you can't tell an enemy by their uniform or their colors, yet you have to protect yourself and the first instinct is antagonize the first giveaway, in ESO, race. Statistically speaking a Breton is most likely be an enemy combatant or sympathizer for EP than an exception to the rule. This can be circumvented almost entirely by displaying loyalty, which is abiding to one of the alliance nation's culture. If you don't blend, in their lands, during a war, you are rightfully so a threat.

Then, by lore, every nation has a % of races distributed in the provinces. In Morrowind (2002) for instance, there was a topic you could inquire about Vvardenfell or Races and the line was something 50% Dunmer and the other half outlanders of different proportions. So according to the lore your Breton can fit in EP by being born/living in one of EP nations. Either by remaints of diplomacy, adoption, sheer accident, etc. Nords are too drunk to tell the difference, Argonians I'd imagine see humans as all the same, just like humans have problems telling Argonians genders, and Dunmer are xenophobic by nature. They don't hide their in group preferences and rather have their land for themselves, Morrowind first. Thus they will be like that with all other races, stung by the removal of their precious slavery and having to ally with the very lesser race they subjugated in the past.

Finally, if you want to legit a character respecting the lore we have so far in the game, your Breton will belong to one of the three nations or become a migrant. The chances of being accepted without making drastic changes to your culture and convert to them are very low. Keep silence about your culture and preferences if you want not to be noticed and would be unrealistic to live a full patriotic Breton with his blue flag waving in Pact lands during war times. I'm not familiar with the legal implications but expect retaliation. I go as far to not even ride my Daggerfall Alliance horse in Pact lands or have DC memoriabilitia in properties on these lands. And if your character was born on the land for whatever reason it would be more likely he would have adopted the customs/culture/clothing/manners of the nation he was born in to.

As a nord teenager?

I forgot the age old reason - you or your parents married into the area... If your parents did it... Then you don't need to think of a big story since you were born in that area.

Also... War orphan. You were on a border town and parents were killed and some soldier or mage adopted you instead of letting you starve.

It's more lore-friendly than Argonians in the Pact alongside the Dunmer.
