Armor for noobies

The noobie articles on line all say: wear at least one piece of each type: light/medium/heavy to level up all three.

Been doing that and only heavy is leveling. Got 2 lights/2mediums rest heavy. Only heavy appears in the armor skill area, so only it levels...

What am I doing wrong?

After the added "hidden" skill lines, it changed a bit.

Equip more (i forget if it's 3 or 5 pieces) of light armor and kill a mob. Then equip more medium armor and kill a mob. That should unlock those skill lines, at which point you can level with 1 of each type, and they'll all gain experience.

was not a big fan of them "hiding" skill lines - for whatever the purpose was...

created 2 new warden characters with morrowwind...

even knowing about the change it was still a pain in the butt to remember to unlock all the skill lines...

I was under the impression that even if you don't "unlock" the skill line, you'll still gain xp into it. Of course you can't access it so its rather fruitless unless you're not going to use the skills until much later anyway.

Edit: Also, yes it is 3 pieces.

They changed it when Morrowind was released. You need to equip 3 pieces of each armour weight to unlock the skill line. After that you can switch to 5 pieces of the armour you want to wear and 1 each of the others (or whatever combination you prefer).

Yeah, this is, or was, correct. I haven't checked in awhile. Also, reading a book that advances that skill line will also reveal it.

You should be still leveling the skill lines behind the scenes, even if you have not worn the 3 pieces yet. Mages works this way, you can read a bunch of books and then join them and get all the levels. But, Fighter's does not level unless you have it unlocked.

So, please try the 3 armors of the weight needed to unlock the lines and report back here if there was already progress.

If not, I need to change all my leveling guides.....grrrr grumble grumble

Confirmed Below, you accrue experience in the armor line even if you have not unlocked it.

I generally unlock as many skill lines by reading books as quickly as I can.
So they raised the floor and lowered the ceiling. Except the ceiling has spikes in it now and the floor is also lava.

To open a skill line for the first time you need to have 3 of that type equipped until you get the skill line - after that you can wear less of them. There is even a tutorial hint showing up from time to time in the lower right corner, which is mentioning this for as long as you do not have all 3 armor types in your skill set.

    OK.

Threw on a 3rd piece of Light and immediately the skill line popped up at level 6+.

Again thanks for the new information.

this is still working like that.
The skillline lvls up even if you haven unlocked it yet. Tested it with my Magblade which I lvld this week and the med and heavy skillines are at 35 and 39 points when i unlocked them

Oh this is good to know, because I have a few characters who just have the medium armor skill line - so if i would unlock the others, I would already by skilled in them - that's interesting.

Don't even have to kill a mob, I just equipped the third piece and the skill line popped up. :)

Killing a mob unlocks a weapon skill line.

..or hit those bookshelves, and you can easily find the ones to unlock the majority of skills, including light, med and heavy armor. Each time I create a new toon, I'll hit up all the bookshelves in the Mage Guild in Davon's Watch first. 9 times out of 10, I will have found those that unlock the skills. Even if I'm wearing a light, med or heavy piece, but it's not yet showing or unlocked within the skillsets, I still hit every bookshelves I come across. Most times, I would find a shelf that would unlock it prior to finding three or more of each pieces to wear. Just another option..
