Crash and reboots while playing ESO.

My brand new laptop computer (less than a month old) has been having random crashes (with instant reboots) while playing ESO. I seem to be instantly able to log back into the game and play again without any trouble. But I am concerned its happening with my new computer.

It happened the first time yesterday (While in Vaults of madness dungeon) and then again today (just in Wayrest) but I had no issues earlier.

Overheating??

I had recently bought Morrowind so I had been spending a lot of that first month in VVaadenfel so maybe there is some computing inefficiency with the older content that causes overheating issues?

If it continues I might I have to get one of those laptop stands that are meant to increase airflow.

    I think this is happening to a lot of us. I have been trying to get into the game for like... the past hour? with no results ;-;

Theres a really nifty program you can download for free, I can't remember the name of if off the top of my head, but it moniters fan speeds and temperatures within computer. This game can wreak havoc on internal temperatures, had to add a fan to my personal pc to get the temps down to a survivable level.

Don't let it go without investigating, unless you have a manufacture warranty

If your new laptop meets the minimum system requirements for The Elder Scrolls Online, you should try the following troubleshooting steps for these random crashes:

Check graphics card drivers and settings

Download and install latest drivers for your graphics card:

In addition, you should ensure your video driver is selecting the correct GPU for ESO by opening either the NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Catalyst Control Panel and ensuring that ESO64.exe is making use of your primary GPU.

    Download Windows updates

Download and install the latest version of DirectX here.

Download and install the Visual C++ update here.

To ensure there are no issues, you should check that you have all Windows updates installed (using Windows Update), including both the required and optional updates. After running all of the required updates, please reboot your computer for the changes to take effect. Once you have rebooted your machine, you should check to see if any additional updates are now available. You may need to update and restart your machine multiple times before all updates are installed.

    Change the game’s graphics settings

You can change the game's graphics settings by following the process below:
    1. From ESO’s log in screen, click SETTINGS.
    2. Select Video.
    3. Lower your View Distance.
    4. Change your Display Mode and lower the Resolution.
    5. Turn Anti-Aliasing off.
    6. Lower your Graphics Quality setting.
      • Note: If you are using a 32-bit client, we recommend you set your Graphics Quality settings to either medium or low.

    Repair the game client

To repair the game client, open the ESO Launcher, click Game Options, and then select Repair.

    Remove any mods or add-ons

Turn off or remove all mods or add-ons you have installed.

Well it didn't happen today which is good but I spent more time in VVaadenfel today.

Oh it definitely meets the requirements, my 10 yr old computer I had before this did as well.

    64 bit - windows 10
    i7-7700HQ
    16GB RAM.
    Geforce 1070

    Addons:
Tamerial Trade Centre, Master Merchant, Awesome Guildstore and Combat metrics

I have had them running the whole time but it was just last two days I had the issue with the crashing.

If I have to redownload the game it will take 3 days so I'd rather randomly crash than do it. Does the repair just check the game files? or does it redownload?

I still think overheating is the issue I might have to take breaks in the action to let it cooldown... or elevate my laptop off the table for better airflow.

My computer used to shut down completely when my video card fan quit working. I don't know the name of the program I have but you can monitor your temperature while playing ESO.

If your computer is not overheating I would lower your graphics setting and see if that stops ESO from crashing.

My 7970 recently caused me no end of trouble. My PC would crash and sometimes restart but sometimes it would get caught in a reboot loop. This happened for about 18 months. But when the card did finally die I was caught in an endless reboot loop. Removing it fixed the issue. Failing hardware can cause issues over a period of time and it only gets worse. Now I'm using the Intel 4600 my system has to play and it works fine, albeit low level graphics but I am amazed at how many games I can play with no GPU!

Keep an eye on your lap top. If it's only crashing while gaming then I would look at getting cooling for it. It would be a worry being a new laptop. The warranty should cover though.

Overheating is worth a closer look. Get something that will monitor CPU and GPU temperatures for you. Airflow is often a problem with laptops, but (in my experience) they just throttle back until the fans can balance against the heat.

I found a free program to monitor.. at the end of my session today GPU temp was at 80oC and I was mostly while I was in vvandenfell this session.

Looks like the game is actually using all my cpu cores, I had heard that it wasn't.

I am looking into those laptop stands to help with air flow atm.

I don't know what change they made to optimization, but after today's updates I'm having issues with my Graphics card crashing. My screen will just go black and nothing else will happen. I have to hard restart the PC and it will all come back.

    Win 8.1 64 bit.
    i7-4770k 3.4ghz processor (Not overclocked)
    12MB Ram
    GTX 960 4Gb
    1Tb HDD.

GPU temp is around 62 degrees, which is apparently excellent.
Fan speed is only 5-6%, Goes up as temp raises.

This was not happening prior to today's update.
This is happening with this game only. No other games played effects the card in this manner.

Windows is up to date.. Nvidia drivers and DirectX drivers are all up to date.

Update: Repaired the game and logged into a different character on the gold coast and was able to go around on that for some time.. then I had full inventory and decided to go the Outlaws Refuge.

Traveling from wayshrine to wayshrine resulted in a really long load screen.

As soon as I entered the load screen to the Anvil Outlaw's Refuge, I was sit with the Black Screen Again, but this time it appeared my system rebooted itsself.

So for me so far, it seems that there is an issue with the change in zones or certain areas like the Anvil Outlaw's Refuge creating issues.

It is possible that MS updated have updated something in the background. MS send out new updates in the beginning of weeks.

Look up DDU and read instructions on how to clean out your video cards drivers and re install drivers again. It might be a conflict in your video cards drivers or some add on that make use of some resources that only trigger during certain events.

That's one of the first things I did and it made no difference... even been running with a few others to check a few things... If I find the solution I will update this... but everything points to something in the way the game was updated and how it is handled by the users system.
