Tanking gear questions

So I know there are some tanking guides out there (Alcast/Deltia) that show best in slot and sometimes beginner options, but what about everything else.

There are a ton of different sets available in game now but it seems like only a select few are used.

I am gearing up my 50 tank to start learning in normal dungeons before moving up to vet but would like to look at my options.

I am not rich by any means so plz keep that in mind. If I need to spend 100k on a tank set it wont happen. I can craft anything though so crafted gear is easily obtained.

Anyone want to show some good tanking alternatives for a DK Tank as far as gear and slot? Not BIS as I wont get that for awhile and can find in the guides, I am after that good working class set that I can use my healer to farm if needed but that will keep me alive. I know There are a lot of group friendly tanking sets as well and I will get those as I get more experienced.

What tanking sets can I look for that will make sure I can survive pretty much any single hit with enough health left for that second smaller hit or the adds? I have been saving Ebon gear and I know about Plague Doctor, but are there any other choices that are as good or almost as good? And even better anything I can craft that would be easier for me to make myself and put the traits I want on?

Easy and effective dungeon tank setup that will easily transfer into normal trials is Torugs pact and ebon. As far as Monster sets go, mighty chudan, Lord warden, blood spawn or 1 piece Shadowrend 1 piece chokethorn all work. Use 2 body pieces ebon and 3 jewellery. Craft the remaining piece's you need of Torugs pact, infused weapons and I like to use sturdy on everything else this patch.

The crafted set I like for learning to tank is Whitestrake"s Retibution. Its training wheels for a tank. The large damage shield that procs at 30% health is amazing for saving you from a mistake and a big cue for "hey, I need to block that next time!" Even better, one you know the mechanics and aren't making mistakes, the damage shield quits proccing because you aren't losing huge chunks of health anymore. That's when you know its time to move on to different tank sets.

Other good crafted sets: Hist Bark and Torug's Pact (while using the crusher enchantment)

There are lots of other sets you can use for different things. There's Bahara's Curse and Leeching plate for heals. Plague Doctor+ Green Pact for high health.

I prefer to use either Plague Doctor (dropped set from Deshaan) or Ebon Armory (Dungeon - Crypt of Hearts) as a base set and then combo it with something else. Both sets give high health.

I used Hist Bark and Shalidor's Curse for a while at the beginning. That's a good combo too.

Mister_DMC has some very good advice here. But you said you want something less "meta" so I would say try my leech build. 5pc leeching plate set, 5 pc bahraha's curse, and the maulbeth the scorger (or however you spell that) monter set. Leeching plate is found in ICP, just run it on normal, baharas curse is harder to get because overland it drops only as medium armor now but can still drop from heist coffers and the quest coffers as heavy, because of this try to buy health traited rings (blue is completely fine, and it's cheap) and a necklace so you have less body armor you need. One thing you can also do is if you find a baharas curse medium belt use that because it's the smallest piece and it will go towards your undaunted. Maulbeth the Scorger drops from Wayrest Sewers II vet, and it's not a very hard dungon. Try and get everything in sturdy, unless you prefer to run infused on your big pieces. This set isn't considered meta, but it is very fun and you will almost never die because you get massive self heals.

I would use fortified brass since you can craft it and use the motifs you want. It gets your resist up so you don't have to think about it once in the dungeon and you can slot something like structured entropy on both bars instead of spiked armor so you don't have to keep refreshing it. Instead you get an 8% passive health boost. If you are at lvl 50 but not at CP 160 whenever you need to re-craft your set fortified brass is dirt cheap you don't have to run a dungeon to get another ebon set. The other set can be anything. Order of Diagna probably works well pre-CP 160 since there is always a dolmen group going in al'akir so getting three jewelry pieces should be trivial. 3 pc order of diagna for health bonus and 5 pc whatever your crafted set of preference is.

Once you reach CP 160 there there are all kinds of sets that work great. I would still stick with fortified brass but the sets that have proc when you take damage work great for trash pulls and boss with adds. You probably need 3 tanking sets for veteran when you get there. A standard set. A mitigation set. A dps set.

Fortified brass is pretty good as a crafted set. It is working well for my tank both in pve and pvp. I've got it paired with 5 pieces of Plague Doctor's (jewelry and weapons). When I get the last piece of Ebon it will be strictly for pvp. Purple ebon jewelry comes from vet COH so you may want to try for plague Dr or green pact for your dropped set as you can easily farm dolmens for jewelry. I have not been impressed with Torugs but so far have only run it on a Templar tank, it may be better for a DK

So right now I am looking at either Ebon/Whitestrakes or Ebon/Fortified Brass or possible Ebon/Plague.

Keep in mind I already have a bunch of Ebon pieces including 2 rings and I am CP300.

    Any votes for those sets?

P.S. I really like the leech set idea and I will probably farm for that after I get these easier sets.

Heavy Fortified Brass is overkill. You’ll be over the resistance cap which is useless in PVE.

Resilient Yokeda far surpasses leeching plate but I didn't include it as it's it a trials set, plus it has an awesome visual effect when you bar swap or it procs. It's basically a free heal to max health every 10 seconds. I've tried leeching and baharas and Resilient is the best.

As a DK tank will my resists raise with skills? I figured I would need gear to raise them?

You have as a DK spiked armor and it's morphs, which is Major Resolve/Ward for 20 s (5280 resistance to each). There is also the passive Scaled armor which gives additional spell resistance.

Torug’s + Ebon + 1pc Shadowrend & Chokethorn or 2pc Malubeth (if you feel you need a bit more heals).
What I find is rather nice about Torug’s is that you can have crusher on main bar, and weakening (about 580-something weapon damage reduction) on off-bar and switch out the weapons depending on how comfortable you feel with the content you are tackling.

So for a dungeon you’ve become comfortable tanking, you have crusher weapon on main bar. And when you feel you are getting thrown around a bit, you can swap it out to have the weakening weapon on main bar, instead.

If you are CP 300 then fortified brass + livewire is worth looking into for a stamina tank. Again with fortified brass you don't have to refresh spiked armor which effectively increases your magicka regen by ~300 which can be spent on obsidian shield or talons or something else. It also frees up a GCD and you don't have to worry about spiked armor coming off when you are about to get hit by a large heavy attack then trying to squeeze in a spiked armor refresh with vigor and boneshield and w/e else you might need to recover. Livewire concusses which increases damage taken by targets in area by 8%. The livewire sword is pretty cheap to boot last time I checked(They were pretty cheap. Livewire must have gained in popularity or something). I bought a gold one for 7k and it can be transmuted to whatever trait fills your boots. And ebon armor if you have the 5 piece set is going to have 3 floating red balls around you which is annoying. The monster helmet you use depends on your tanking style and what you are fighting.

What he said for a group mitigation tank. There are bosses that randomly hit your group for huge damage so ebon+low slash+weakening looks good. I might craft torug's myself for a couple of those HM bosses.

So I have a set of Bloodspawn monster armor, should I use that or something else? I was thinking I would want more resist and this looked great, plus the ultimate generation.

Ebon+ torugs works great. I use snb front bar, infused, crushing glyph, lightning destro backbar, infused, weakening glyph
