Copying another player's @ name using different variations of lower case L and capital i

That is very strange. Why would anyone want to do that unless they didn't know it at the time or if you don't have a unique enough name or a gold seller trying to steal your account...the long way. Still quite strange that ZOS would allow that.

So it is possible (as far as I'm aware) to use some variation of capital i and lower case L (l and I) to copy another person's account name if it is in block caps. This has been done by a player in game and reported (not naming anyone) and the person is still playing the game like nothing happened, after like 2 weeks+

Is this not classed as impersonating another player? Or is it acceptable? I would have thought it was against the rules but maybe I'm mistaken...

Also sorry if this thread isn't allowed for discussing disciplinary actions or something. I was just curious if I'm missing something

too bad sunshine. you know how many variations of my email address there are? even with upto 4 underscores it was still taken. 4 underscores in a row. and someone already had it. (and no, my username here isnt the same as my email). and i have had my email address for a very, very long time but when i got a new email provider, damn. took me a while to find anything remotely similar. Just because someone has a username similar to yours, doesnt mean they are out to get you. get over yourself. there are that many people online that it will happen.

Uh huh... and I once typed random letters and that name was taken too. By some gold farmer no doubt. No one has ever taken my main's name from me because originality prevents that problem. But when your name is DeathStroke or AragornLOL or StinkyCheese or EvilHamster then you're going to run into that problem. People with unique handcrafted online handles tend to not expect others to copy them.

iv had this username across many games, and occasionally i get asked if im someone else. so yeh, people do have the same username as this. and my email which is different has very similar ones too.

the OP thinks someone is out to get them when this is a fairly common occurance. Its the internet. how many users are there?

The person the OP is talking about its the one who ruins EU Vivec for everyone 6 days a week by nightcapping and zerging down the whole map and its funny to see how he is triggered about it considering hes in the zerg who nightcaps the map. And since when theres a rule on imitating someones name? Deal with it.

Like other people have said having a similar usename to another player isn't against the TOS so ZOS are not going to do anything about it. If they then go on to do things which are breaking the TOS (like scamming players) you could report them for that, but not simply for having a similar name.

No one owns the right to a username, or a real name for that matter. I once got an email from a very worried friend letting me know someone had "stolen" my username on Twitter. Except they hadn't - I'd never even attempted to sign up for Twitter at that point so they can hardly be accused of stealing it and there's about a million people online who call themselves Danikat, even before I started using it. I couldn't have done anything about it even if I'd wanted to - all it meant was that when I finally gave in and got a Twitter account I had to pick another name. (I'm more surprised that it's rarely taken when I try to use it, I guess we don't have similar interests.)

This is absurd. Just because someone made a variation of the name you chose doesn't mean they're out to copy you as a person. Everyone has had the "your username is taken" pop up at some point and have just got a way around it. This seems childish. If they happen to like a name similar to yours, looks like you'll have to deal with it, or find another name no one would think of so you can't get hurt.

There are people out of spite try to mimic your username to slander it. My username is hard to mimic so I don't tend to have that issue tbh.

It is not a coincidence. It is a player who is doing it in an ironic way in order to try and effect the other player. I cannot disclose anything else but it is 100% NOT a coincidence. I'm not quite that stupid

Then have your friend change their name to one that can't be copied, problem solved. :)

It's nothing to do with me. It's a top PvPer, part of the elite, who has copied another players (a zerg creator, let's say) in order to mock him. It has nothing to do with someone wanting a certain name which is taken by another player. It is 100% malicious intent.

It is not my username. It is an elite player who has changed their account name to another 'famous' person's name (a 'zerg leader') in the game in order to mock them. Sort of like a "I'm above you, you can't touch me, lalala" kind of thing. I don't even know either of the people, it's just something weird that I noticed going on.

If you actually read what I wrote, you'll know that I'm not thinking anyone is out to get me :D since it's not even myself who is being impersonated, nor do I even know personally the person being impersonated or the one impersonating. It's just something I've picked up on, with 100% certainty that the impersonator (part of the elite pvp crew) has changed it to mock another PvP player.

Meh. It's not my friend. It's just someone who is 'famous' in PvP for probably the wrong reasons (creating zergs) who is being impersonated by part of the 'elite pvp crew'. I'm not even looking for a solution. Just pointing out that I find it strange that ZOS does nothing about impersonation in this game when it can actually be pretty harmful in some situations

I usually log out at around 10pm GMT since that's when my partner goes to sleep so unless you're mistaking me with someone else, your definition of night capping is... warped :D@VoiDGhOs7

Plus I have been out of the country for the past 2 months without PC access and didn't even get back into PvP yet after returning... so yeah, definitely mistaking me for someone else :p

My thread is more about ZOS' stance on impersonating, and asking whether or not it's against the rules. I don't care for either of the people in this particular situation as I don't know either of them and don't care to.

Based on what I am reading here, the "copy cat" is trolling your friend in game. Your group needs to remember the old adage: sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.

Seriously, don't let the other guy win. Consider how small their self esteem must be to play that game to begin with. If they break the TOS, report and move on. Keep reporting until something is done, but never stoop to the level of the troll. If you do, you have lost.

Yeah that's pretty much how I'm looking at it. He's not my friend though. Actually I don't like both of the players but I still don't agree with the intent of the impersonator. No matter how annoying someone may be, shouldn't give anyone the right to try and make another persons experience in the game worse through impersonation. To me it just feels petty and low

If someone can simply look at the two names, they can tell it's not them as you cannot make them identical. There are loads of variations of names that people make because people simply like them. Why on earth would ZOS ban it on behalf of the tiny amount of people trying to slander? Don't give in to the petty people.

I've done that before. I Don't normally remember other peoples character names enough for something like this to matter to me , and the chances of actually running into someone who has the original version of the name is EXTREMELY slim, especially considering the fact they may not even be playing anymore. And if the planets align on Friday the 13th, and the original name owner actually comes across you, they probably won't even notice your characters name!

If you are absolutely certain someone is purposely trying to impersonate you, sure, ok you have a right to complain about it.

As far as in general goes, NOBODY is picking different versions of a taken name to impersonate that person lol. Out of every thousand double names, maybe one might be an impersonator. If that.

Maybe I don't understand what the Original Poster is trying to say. When I made a post a few months ago about my name being taken, I was told to use different variations of the name I wanted. So this is encouraged. So I can't see this a bad thing.

Is the original poster saying someone else is imposing as someone else?

Yes. I think I made that pretty clear, at least in my follow up comments
